Thanks for posting this, I did this wonderful course not expecting to be able to carve a single piece as i'm cack handed at woodwork and even though I now have a finished puppet I couldn't remember how to start, This vid is great in jogging the memory though I wish there was more info. John is a wonderful teacher though he sounds quite stern and dry while telling you about the water stone sharpener which isn't the case at all!
Thank you for posting this. I live in the US, but would love to travel over there and take this course in the future! I'd love to find out some of those Chinese Carving Secrets...

I am so happy that the tradition of this theatre is still alive. I used to go there when I was a little girl!

If anyone would like more information on the type of Puppets shown in this Video the following will be useful:
PuppetCraft is a touring puppet company based in Devon, UK and provided the course shown in this video.
The Little Angel Theatre is a Puppet Theatre in London, UK, and the Video was filmed here.
Both of these companies have websites with lots of information on Shows and Courses.

I used Lime wood for the arms , legs and middle part of the pelvis, the rest is Jelutong which is the softer of the two, hope this helps!

Absolutely fantastic workshop and marionettes. Loved seeing the finished result strung and manipulated without costume.
