The song is about a soldier who was brought to England after the Jacobite Rebellion (1746) and condemned to be hung. It is believed that the English used a lottery sysytem to condemn the prisoners. He explains to another soldier that is to be released that he will be in Scotland before him because Celtic belief is that the dead return to their place of birth through the lowlands (under the earth) while the living must take the slow way home traveling over the land. If Any English Are Watching This Then They Would Say That This Is A Wonderul Song and You Cant Deny It. Now this is just my opinion I think Scotland is truly beautiful for its people and all the places. You wouldnt go anywhere in Scotland and say that you thought a city there was horrible or anything. Now there is some places that could be better but they still have beautiful parts to them. Everyone could agree with me on this is they truly thought the same.

I'm English, and I love all of Britain equally. I don't even refer to myself as English because I think of Britain as a single entity. And the fact that I, and most Brits, have heritage from all four countries anyway means we're all basically brothers.

As for all the celtic stuff, well genetic science proved years ago that even Norfolk (The least celtic area) is more than 75% Celtic/Brythonic.

Because we are seperate countries and even if you're a unionist, you should still appreciate your culture. Don't get me wrong, I hate ethno-nationalists and racists, but I do agree with a nationalism that is based on a love of your country rather than a hatred of others. I personally want Scotland out of the Wastemonster war machine. The UK is a union which is off its sell by date and based on the supression and intimidation of the smaller constituent countries.

Yes, and I do love the culture of England, but I also love the culture of Scotland, Wales, and NI. I love the diversity of culture between the four countries, and also the fact that we are the only union in the world made up of several countries under a single government (the EU doesn't count because they all have individual governments too with much more power).

What about the history of our four nations working together to achieve great things, does that not matter to you?

Of course it's a great thing that we worked together, but I feel Scotland should have the right to tax its own oil, to refuse to enter wars etc, which currently it does not.

History is a pointless argument in this case, because there was a great deal of cultural supression in the Highlands of Scotland for example.

We should really be focusing on the future in this case, I feel Scotland will be more sucessful as a seperate country.

I think how it is is perfect, we have our own cultures, but together we are the world's 5th most powerful nation.

And besides, I'm from Britain, I like all of Britain, and I like being able to say I'm from Britain :-p. Also, just look at the flag, easily one of the best looking flags in the world!

We're not the fifth most powerful country in the world, but we do have the fifthy highest GDP. However, per capita, the smaller countries of the EU have far higher wealth so I think that Scotland, with its high number of university graduates and very high natural resources (both renewable and mineral), could be a far wealthier country if it was independent.

Per Capita, before the recession, we were higher than the USA. We were about 6th or 7th, and the US was 10th. Now we're about 15th because the recession has hit us pretty hard.

I know the people in West Scotland are not the same as Londoners because I'm from Northern England and we're nothing like Londoners either. In fact I'm probably more like someone from Western Scotland in that respect.

I think the diversity of our culture is one of the things that makes us great,

Actually, the UK has long been around the 20th country in terms of wealth per capita, just check wiki for the official World Bank figures etc.

Will that diversity wilt away with independence, even with a strong EU? I think not.

I checked wikipedia, and we're exactly 15th, like I said, lol.

And most the other nations ahead of us are tax havens, or specifically low tax, but administered by other countries. Such as Guernsey (UK), Jersey (UK), Qatar (SA), Singapore (UK), Hong Kong (China - financially largely administered by UK). All these countries are in there, and as you can see, if you take them out, Britain is actually 10th, and even higher because all the UK administered earnings are really British as well.

Britain is not a war machine, Tony Blair sent our country to war because he wanted to impress Bush, despite the majority of parliament being against the decision. Personally I think it's offensive you think England actually wanted that, did you not notice that the biggest protest in the history of mankind took place in London against the Iraq war? I was among them, and I also went to the one on Princes street, Edinburgh.

When does the UK suppress or intimidate the union nations? Rubbish!

The government is currently run by a Scot - so that arguments out the window.

The money is shared by how much a particular county has made - the county 'I' was born in, despite being in England - is poorer than any other county in Britain.

I'm not religious, I love Britain because for the last 300 years we've had a great shared history where we pushed technology forward in so many different ways! United we brought on the industrial revolution, invented modern medicine, invented the computer and the TV, and of course we once ruled 25% of the world, the majority of which prospered under us, and continue to prosper now!

We don't take your money or energy, it's SHARED!
