heh, ok but that is how it is. Hyenas don't have another way to kill prey and a lot of other predators don't kill cleanly either, lions too prey alive and leopards disembowel their prey with their hind legs, like your average cat would a rabbit. Every creature is just fighting to survive, sometimes the prey gets away, sometimes it's the predator that ends up seriously wounded or even dead (only they don't show that on tv that much as people like seing the predator being successful).
From what I have seen, lions also eat their prey alive. Wildcastr has a video showing lions eating a Buffalo alive; raising his head, moaning loudly, all while the lions are munching on his back end.
I also noticed that while one lion is suffocating the animal, others are already biting into the animal's belly. So until that animal is rendered unconscious, he/she will feel their bones breaking, and their intestines being pulled out.
African predators don't have time to wait for a dead pulse.

I'm sure hyenas know they can kill the animals but I'm pretty sure they just don't care. They take advantage of being higher in the food chain and make prey suffer for it. (a) doesn't fight back (see video of lions eating baby elephant with broken legs), or
(b) is too large to suffocate (lots of videos of lions just climbing on buffalos or hippos and chowing down), or
(c) is dangerous to try to suffocate (warthogs—they could slit a lion's throat if with its tusks if it tried to suffocate it)
then the lion will eat it alive.

Zebra was in pain and suffering, beleive it or not as disgusting as that video is, those Hyenas probably gave that Zebra the quickest death possible (Apart from Guns). Being eaten alive is gross but being strangled to death would be just as bad. I've seen some horrible videos Lions taking as long as 3 hours trying to choke their prey, THAT"S TORTURE!

Leopards and Lions are real professionals. they kill they prey first and then eat them.
Hyenas are definitely the worst nightmare of preys.

Lions woulda suffocated him in a matter of seconds, minutes at most. this is a far longer, more gruesome death - the narrator even says that the hyenas would have to wear him out. so he's already broken a leg and covered in other scars - hobbling around and kicking at the hyenas would be excuciating for him too.
despite being castrated and being eaten alive, if you watch closely he still kicks a hyenas jaw as he gets up! good on him :)

I'm sure hyenas know they can kill the animals but I'm pretty sure they just don't care. They take advantage of being higher in the food chain and make prey suffer for it. Lions are much more majestic. They take their time putting the prey out of their misery and when they're dead THEN they start feeding. Wouldn't surprise me if that were one of the reasons Lions and Hyenas are rivals... lol.
