I have a Hohner HG320 that also was made in the mid to late 70's that I've owned since '81 or so. They made great guitars then. For tone I'd put it up against most Martins.
@Maxxlagg I agree...the wood on my Hohner has aged nicely such that the tone is as good as some of the mid-grade Martins and certainly outshines the lower end ones.
I've been learning to do this for months now, getting there, but I find it hard to concentrate for long in this tuning,(Gsus4(2), which is what it's best played in apparantly), as I go off on musical tangents so much, I'm fooling around on my 12-string acoustic in this tuning, and believe me, it sounds brilliant, though harder to play the 'rain song'.
I Still cant beiieve how Great this Perfomance is!!,..no talking no explanations,no b.s.
just pure unadulterated, eversweet execution!!,..Not that anyone cares, but i use this song and this version in partiicular, to wake to every morning!! Thanx Again,...
kansasio, I can tell you have this song in your heart. I know being humble but's It's really OK to smile. You did a great job and we all enjoy it. Record it again and look at us and smile occasionally and know that we are smiling with you. Playing guitar is a gift.
man, that is some beautiful music you've made here... what a pleasure to have found your video. thanks so much for sharing your talent with us on such an incredible Zepplin tune. awesome....
wonderful, this song always makes me travel to distant places in my imagination.. where its always raining smoothly in the end of the night and the mist is thin crossing the moon, and with that sweet feeling, which is a little scary, but relaxing too.. i dive deep into wonder.. kinda like the first time u smoke weed..thats wht i feel when i hear this song, ROFL. u play nice
freezebucko- wow! thanks so much for this post, you mentioned troubleclef- your version is just as hypnotic-this is the essence of what makes Youtube so amazing
@BuckoInCowboylands He's good, and definitely better than me, however NO one can touch Trouble Clef's rendition. HE does it better than Jimmy Page! Bass notes and all. But coming up with that tuning and writing such a beautiful song, on top of being one of the greatest rockers of all time........all hats off to Jimmy Page.
awesomeness !!! what else to say? very good works!!! most excelelnt job !!! this is great !! i think page and plant would approve ! i would definatly loke to hear it with the vocals too.
Do you happen to know if Page played the original in this tuning? I learned this song years ago in standard tuning, and the fingering is quite a bit more difficult than the way you're playing it here. *hits self in the head* :-)
Not disparaging your version at all -- just curious if I made it more difficult on myself unnecessarily.
@kansaslo : I'll second that. Watching Jimmy play this tune, it looks like he's in alt. Man, learning it in standard E tuning must have been a mother, huh!?
just check out the live versions of Jimmy on youtube...this is without a doubt correct. Thanks for posting this by the way. Really nice job. It helped me so much in learning the song!
just check out the live versions of Jimmy on youtube...this is without a doubt correct. Thanks for posting this by the way. Really nice job. It helped me so much in learning the song!
@Ken5244 the song is in the tuning dgcgcd for studio thats the one i play but page live plays eadfde wich i dont suggest cause u will probally break your string ;)
@jrodkelly1 yah dude. two steps up on the B string? wow, that's a lot 'o' tension on that mofo. another "scary to tune to" tuning is ECDGAD used by andy mckee. it's two steps up on the A string.
@Ken5244 yea, the song chords and phrasing is easy for me (it always has been) but i always wonder how jimmy came up with these beautiful chords on such strange tunings which (if you know music theory and ANYTHING about root, 3rd, octave) and weird shit like that, you'd think "WTF! how did he figure that shit out?"
Well, what I meant by the phrasing was that Page had a uniquely sloppy style that's hard to duplicate because it was so intrinsically HIM. His phrasing was more emotion-based than technique based. I've heard a zillion really good guitarists play Zeppelin songs, and NONE of them ever come close to sounding like Page. They play the notes but can't duplicate the feel.
Re theory, yeah, I get you. Page knew his theory to the point he could play the sounds he heard in his head.
Bullshit to all the critics. That was very well done brother! Thanks for sharing. I haven't played this song in 20 years, and when I played it, it was on my Les Paul, not acoustic. Sounds so beautiful on an acoustic. I loved it, thanks again!
Thanks for the nice comments. The guitar I used is a Hohner HG320 that was made sometime in the mid 70s. I actually like the sound better than some of my higher end guitars because the wood has aged nicely.
hey "chrismodiano" not to to rip yer britches bro but, wouldn't it be better to show how good you really are with your own video(s) ? just asking. don't take it personally.
Shhhh, I'm just picking on the asshat who comes in to somebody's video only to dis them and shit all over the guys talent. Nobody gives a shit if he's better. It's not his video. I don't even play the guitar, I was just trying to be more abrasive than him.
Nicely done! Hearing this played with just the acoustic part shows how at the core of so many great songs are beautiful melody and chord work. The key to much of Zeppelin's acoustic-oriented tracks is that the embellishments and instrumental arrangements are just sparse enough that the beauty of the individual instruments come through while still blending into an amazing mix. Once multi-track recording really took off , many good tunes and melodies were ruined by over-production!
Great playing! I'd say Troubleclef has a slight edge on you by playing with a bit more feeling, but otherwise this is the 2nd best version on youtube (other than jimmys version!) as far as I'm concerned. If I could play as well as you I would be as happy as a clam in mud.....
Awesome to watch. Been a fan of that song for 30+ years. I started playing guitar after college and specialize in lead guitar. I doubt I could have the patience to learn the entire song like you did.
