@commodore64fan: It did, but this game was better on the Spectrum. And I think the Spectrum in-game music (but NOT the title tune) is better than the C64 version. And I'm speaking as a C64 head myself, but you have to give credit where it's de.
I remember my Dad buying this game, Big box version for £9.99 by Ocean, I was 9, Thought it was rock hard lol its unreal watching it now 22 years later, Thanks for the upload brings back a load of good memories mate cheers.
I remember buying this in 1988 for the spectrum 128k. To this day I still believe the spectrum version was better than the arcade version. If I can remember, to change the colour of the screen you had to press 'C'.
Quality, quality game! This and target renegade were my top 2 on speccy! Awesome music on both. Aaaaah, happy days. Now..... really should get back to work.......aaaaah f*ck it! I wanna watch robocop f*ck up some bad guys!
if only they still made games like this. I would sit and play this for hours and hours on end back when i was a kid the golden age of gaming fuck next gen consoles zx sinclair spectrum gets my vote back when games was games.
This port works so well because it plays to the system's strengths. The same can't be said of the other robocop ports. The programmers must've just said "fuck colours, the spectrum is shit at them anyway".
The 48k memory can be the only restriction, because the levels are long and there is a lot of graphic objects, the full colour objects are moved by 8 pixels and it takes less CPU time than moving monochrome objects by 1 px. Music would not collide in any manner, AY sound is played on 50 Hz interrupts and when the game was released there were available external sound modules for ZX 48.
I love the way this music is handled, the main title indeed sounds very emotional and full of conviction (and a tad bit of unearthly horror, just to let us know the sacrificial aspects of Murphey's death, his brain recycled for public benifit), and the music in the first levels are a mixture of excitement, presision, and a sense of nihilistic sadness at the state of the Detroit and the hordes of criminals.
Yeah, i love the photofit level too. The music is great through out the game but especially on the photofit level. Also the music from the main menu was used in an ariston advert if i remember.
I spent so many hours playing this game over and over.
I just checked out my Gameboy version again, it has some slight differences in music and has an added jump button but the level layout and enemy placement is pretty much the same, it does run faster as well.
Yeah, pretty much the same CPU (some slight modifications in the GB's Z80). However, the GB's video hardware had in-built sprite handling facilities, so that's why GB games are usually smoother than their Speccy equivalents.
i dont think is better but different in all ways(at least 8bits versions). Maybe wikipedia is comparing against Amiga and Atari, which versions are based on coin-op version
i used to record the video with Spectaculator without compressing frames, getting a big,big file and then i convert to mpeg. The actual size of the video is 55mb but the total time is 15:00 more o less.
next video I'll try to convert as you make because i don't understand the time limit(10min) when i see video of bigger time...
In which format was the video before you uploaded it to youtube? I usually record it with the rle option in Spectaculator, and then convert it to .mov with the best possible bitrate and frame rate.
This and dizzy.....

are you playing at 128k mode?
kalateur 2 years ago
I just discovered that wonderful option: ZX Spectrum 128. It ever was 48 and not 128... I can hear now that awesome music... Thank you anyway! :)
nousernameremain 2 years ago
i also recomend other 128 games like ChaseHQ(amazing sound and music), Batman or Rainbow Island
kalateur 2 years ago
This and Batman (and the dizzy collection) were the best spectrum games.

+ Altered Beast, Tetris 2 and R-Type (why no music in this game???)
Abrimaal 2 years ago
R-Type? maybe because it was though for 48k and also because all colours u see while playing take a nice microprocessor time

thx for the info! at least you can jump!! ;-)
i think GB is faster because of its processor has more megahertz than speccy version
kalateur 3 years ago
Yeah, pretty much the same CPU (some slight modifications in the GB's Z80). However, the GB's video hardware had in-built sprite handling facilities, so that's why GB games are usually smoother than their Speccy equivalents.
asterexcel 3 years ago
the gameboy version is a direct port of this version, i have it, it plays very close to the original.
jesusarnold 4 years ago
i thought the same because both Speccy and GB shares microprocessor(Z80). Maybe GB version is a little bit faster
kalateur 4 years ago
This sure resembles exactly like the original gameboy and bit like the coin-op. Wonderful game!

The C64 version had more high-tech synthesised music.
SPeacock 4 years ago
c64 has always better sound but 128k Speccy version (for me) was a shock because of sampling(serve the public trust, protect the innocent...)
kalateur 4 years ago
OK, looks great but I dont' think I agree with Wikipedia's comment on how it's better than the arcade???
