@bestamerica No..No no...I Own One of these! a 1978 Plymouth Horizon (Same thing as omni) And I Know They didn't Copy the VW design!! Early models Like the 1978 Models had 3 colors in rear
Loved my old Omni, took it everywhere even off-road but the day it met the back of a 89 blazer at 40 mph was it's last day, got great milage from it also, only bad thing was a electrical problem.
@jakesaintsrow123 Mine was a 82 if I remember correctly, bought it used in 85 and totaled it with 2 payments left..sad day...someday soon I might try to find one again
We had a 1984 Dodge Omni that was 14 when we got rid of it. I loved the car as a little kid even though it was getting old and getting bad. Wish we still had it though because we could've probably gotten it fixed up and still had it. It's rare you see one on the road these days but back then they were very common.
@jakesaintsrow123 But not 49 HWY. No way. Not even close. My guess is, in those days manufacturers were allowed to make up their own highway mileage numbers. Mine got 31, and that was going 55 with the cruise control on, the A/C off, and heading eastbound (and downhill) from Knoxville to Charlotte on I-40, on super unleaded because the regular stuff would make the car ping like an old pinball machine.
@way2muchsense I Have a 1978 Plymouth Horizon...Not sure what it gets for MPG..Its an automatic and it has a 1.7l VW 4 Cyl Engine! Runs good!! I want to get it on the road this summer!! Some commericals say around 23-24 MPG City....what year was yours? They were not fuel injected until 88....I Love mine!! you still have yours?
@way2muchsense The old EPA "highway" mileage test involved some serious granny driving. It was (and is) run on a dyno to eliminate variables like wind, weather conditions and the like that can't be controlled in a real-world setting and was originally set in the early '70s, when granny driving was all that a dyno could take.
Shortly after this ad ('85 MY I think) they began reducing the numbers by a certain, set amount (15% iirc) and in '08 they went to harder, faster driving with A/C on.
My 87 Omni was a real workhouse! I drove it all during college and for a few years after. The poor car went through hell and back and still ran like a swiss clock! I had only minor troubles with it as it aged and it looked terrible by the time I sold it. The guy who bought it drove it into the city each day for a year and then he called me to come see the car,(named Oscar by the way). A tree fell on it and the thing still ran!!
I have a 90 Omni, and had an 87. I LOVE them. They definitely did not get 40 mpg, it probably could get at least 30 on the highway though. They should bring them back...
I had no problem getting 37 MPG on the highway at 70-75MPH in my 90 Omni... It had so much low-end torque that I rarely had to shift out of fifth for the hills.
I like this commercial but I did notice that the price was not mentioned. I also find it hard to believe that the '84 Omni got 49 MPG on the highway, unless it was a 5 speed. I miss the days when people could buy cars that didn't crumple up like soda cans in an auto accident. I felt a lot safer in my old LeBaron than I do in my 2006 Hyundai Elantra, even though it received a 5 star Crash Test Safety Rating.
49mpg highway?!? hahah.. They WISH.. Note it didn't say EPA on that side.. Even with the optional 1.6L engine, it'd take a small miracle to crack 40mpg on the freeway. Maybe drifting a semi truck downhill or something. Not the way EPA would run the test.
And follow a semi truck at a distance of 20ft. The Omni just isn't aerodynamic, AT ALL. I do love my Omni though. :) I get 37 with my 2.4L engine on the freeway.
My injected '88 with a 2.2 consistently got 40+ mpg on the highway.. you can't fly at 70mph and expect that.. but they did get phenominal mileage. Sorry. They did.
My dad had this exact car up until 2004. Had over 250,000 miles on it.

@tertommy Because French developed cars are known for their reliability right? :P
Crazyerics 1 year ago
@Crazyerics These were build in America, but some came with French engines but you rarely ever see those, you're more likely to see a GLH.
