@rawritsduhwilly 99,9% of JAZZ musicians are better than him. He only uses pentatonic licks, and if you listen to most of his major pieces, he always plays the same kind of bluesy licks. He's not a virtuoso, he's more of the guy a kid could look at and say: "whaaaa look this man is playing saxophone". Look at Michael Brecker to see who a "99,9% best musician" is.

@m1st3rh I never said that Kenny G is not a very talented saxophonist. I feel that he could do a lot more with songs such as this one if he would improvise more. The verse in this song is dead simple. Any person with a moderate amount of skill at improvising could manage an improvised solo. That Kenny G chooses not to, when he certainly has the chops to do so, surprises me.

Kenny G es un fabuloso saxofonista, con una técnica excepcional, un brillo muy llamativo y un gran sentimiento al interpretar casi todas las melodias. Digo casi todas porque para interpretar latin jazz hace falta algo mas que eso... Falta el alma latina que le da ese toque mágico, y eso no lo tiene Kenny, y se nota en esta interpretación, que suena un poco monótona y simple. Pero igual, no se le resta el talento a este gran intérprete.

Jazz musicians are jealous that people spend money to listen to Kenny G rather than calculated gibberish. Jazz musicians have more technical ability, but to what end? Good music doesn't require needless complexity, just look at the Beatles.

@godgunsncountry Nah it's not really like that. Jazz musicians like to show off their talent. Some of it is kinda not needed but it's put there anyway. Sadly to be famous/a celebrity, you make the music simple for the common crowd to understand it. Complexity that you are defining is super-fast scale running through every scale withing 5 seconds it seems lol. Not always like that. Jazz is learned so that you easily apply technique so that you can put on a show for the common crowd.

@Onespellpro Being creative and musical and adventurous has nothing to do with how fast you can play. Speed is a technique like any other and it's neither good now bad in itself. "Easily applying technique so that you can put on a show for the common crowd" is good and all, if your only goal is to make money. I'd rather learn as much technique as I can so better be able to express myself, rather than just being flashy with no substance, which imo is what Kenny G does.

I don't known what many jazz musician are mad at Kenny G, I'm a jazz player and I think his compositions are very good,instead of been so critic toward him we should concentrate in write better music,because he has prove that music is been above improvisation,because thats what the common person wants to hear and period ,stop criticizing him and make your own music and then try to compare yourself instead of been envious.

pat metheny is one of my idols but I wasn't gonna let him affect my opinion on other musicians before giving them a fair chance to prove themselves. I have to say that he was quite right about kenny g! Any beginner musician can play a melody. Its a musician's ability to improvise that defines how good he/she is. I'm afraid to say that kenny g lacks this ability!!

why pat metheny criticize kenny G, the reason is very simple: he is jealous. Every body know that kenny G is not a jazz musician. he never claim himself as a jazz muscian. Open your mind everybody, if you don't like his music, just not to listen. criticism is not necessary.

He needs to get over it, because he just comes across as an asshole. @mightyafrowhitey How things sound and if you like it or not is not really measurable or comparable. However, the depth and range of playing and style is measurable. I suggest you get yourself the dvd of Metheny's "The way up" which is a musical composition of 70 minutes. Watch it, and yes you might not like it (taste) but you have to admit that Metheny really has a much wider vocabulary. There are not many musicians that can compose a piece like that, let alone just perform it…

This song has a chord structure which is just begging for improvisation. Kenny G does a decent job of playing the melody, but for the life of me I can't understand why he doesn't improvise after playing the verse and the refrain. This is why I don't think of Kenny G as a jazz musician, however talented he is on the sax.

@gsco82 He usually does solo over the changes but he didn't here. Watch him with Stevie Wonder. Yeah he's a great player and I look up too him and his success. He never claimed to be a Jazz musician even though he can play jazz. He makes music that people enjoy and that he likes.

@gsco82 Youre entitled to your own opinion, but in my eyes, kenny g will always be one of the best musicians. Maybe what you said its true, but maybe hes just not creative enough to improvise? Besides, he still produces wonderful music, which makes me enjoy his playing.Musicians touch your soul. and that is what kenny g has done for me.

@gsco82 Well on here he played a shortened version of the song but if you heard the album version he doesn't improvise on this song and it was pretty nice. In fact the whole Rhythm and Romance Cd is a breath of fresh air from him. It's very differnet and a must buy if you like his music even the smallest bit. Every upbeat cd and a lot of the song were done live. Check it out you may be shocked. And btw I've seen him play live this man can play he just does what he does to make money end of story

@gsco82 he didn't improvise because it would destroy the rhythm, melody and harmony of the song. its perfect just the way it is, and its his choice whether to improvise or not and even if he didn't that doesn't make him a bad saxophonist. not every jazz player should improvise, coz sometimes improvisation could be a little over the top or boring which is annoying.
