James is a better TRAINED singer/vocalist, he's always used a keyboard in the studio to make sure his pitch is dead on. He's also taken vocalizing lessons. However, it's my opinion that that makes his voice very dry and predictable. Dave sings from feeling and uses his BAND as a foundation to make vocals. Which in my opinion, is how it should be done. For most critics, James would have the better voice, but I like Dave's voice better. It's way more unique and unorthodox. Dave wins in my eyes.

Back in the day, Hetfield was a MUCH better vocalist than Mustaine. Now...I rate Mustaine's vocals over Hetfield. Also, I know many people criticize Mustaine's vocals, but I personally think they're great, the aggression, growling and punkiness fits Megadeth's music perfectly!
James had a better voice, but nowadays I think Dave is the better vocalist, just because he can still sing old stuff live and still sound pretty good.

I think that both James and Dave have both kind of lost a little bit of their edge vocally over the years, but honestly, I would have to say that James Hetfield is better. But, I would also say that Dave is a better guitarist and composer.

Something that nobody has on their minds is that Hetfield copied Mustaine's way of singing while on Metallica, Check the demos. And despite James can sing some armonic tones like in Nothing Else, this is THRASH, not OPERA. That's acceptable because it's a ballad, but he doesn't need to sing it in ALL THE SONGS, like One.
