I never knew a full version of this song existed. I used to love this song when Family Ties came on and sometimes wished it was longer because the song only lasted a minute for the intro. Now that I discovered this is a full song I fell in love with it all over again like it's brand new. Thanks for posting this song. ;)
The Family Ties version (re-recorded for the show) begins and ends differently. For example this original version fades out, the Family Ties recording has a definite ending.
i've heard of johnny mathis...he doesn't reallying my kind of music but Ilove this original version of the song that was used as the familiy ties theme
True collabs like this about the meaning of true love are no more in our seemingly downward spiral of the music in todays world. This is what music needs to go back to. The ORIGINAL stuff. the years where singers like Johnny Mathis and Niecey displayed ORIGINALITY in their music.
There was another version of this song with the Tom Scott saxophone solo in the middle. I would love to have that version. In all due respect to Johnny and Denise, it was Tom Scott that made this song.
For those interested, this is an ALL-STAR song: Jeff Porcaro (drums), Mike Porcaro (bass), Lee Ritenour (guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Greg Phillinganes (Fender Rhodes, keyboards), Ernie Watts (sax, tenor), Vincent DeRosa (French horn), arranged and produced by David Foster.
@keithmilbank ... unbelievable groove, atypical for a soul pop ballad as this but later perceivable in the greatest Toto tracks. It's all in the Porcaro drum/bass line I think.
@Pitumisio pretty sure this is not Jeff Porcaro on this track. Doesn't sound like his drum sound at all. It's either Ed Greene or Mike Baird on this track, as they also appear on this album. I think it's Ed Greene. I'm fairly sure it's Jeff Porcaro on the track "I just can't get over you" off the same album though.
yes, when family ties first season aired it was a slighty different song by different artist, however the beauty of deniece williams and johnny mathis voice is iconic!!! and there version is way better than the first season song thats why they changed it other song was rather flat, dull!
The original Song on Family Ties was sung by someone else, I believe a couple of years later they brought in this Version if I'm correct.. Because I remember when I first found out and realized that it was them I was shocked..
I loved the show, "Family Ties," as did our children, but they knew the most fun I got from watching it was hearing the theme song, and knowing that millions of people were hearing it along with me! Johnny Mathis is my favorite singer, as you can see, if you visit my site!
Me too. It used to ome on Nick at Nite and one night I was asleep and head the song and fell in love with it. I am glad to see that it is an actual recording!!!
This is one of the most romantic and beautiful songs of all time.

I wasn't aware this was a "real" full length song...!
it was always one of my favorite theme tunes but it's wayyy better in full length.
as for the drum debate, it kinda does sound like TOTO's drummer, it's really smooth and groovy to play along with (or try at least $-X )
another amazing smooth theme drum section is in ALF's tune.
