  • i live in eastern ky and this hit us and we was without power for like 3 weeks

  • We were without power for 19 of the longest days of my life! I think we're all a little better prepared now for something like this lol

  • Im tellin ya that ice storm sucked bollocks bad. We wound up having to drive up northin just to get a motel room. The motels were full from people as far south as Mayfield.

  • And now we got about 6 inches of snow here in Paducah. At least it's not ice. I hope I never experience another one as long as I live.

  • really stupid

  • @houston831 Really stupid to show something that caused a state emergency, something I had to go through as well as hundred of thousands of others? No.

  • @BNSF9192 yep just like me was out of power for two weeks so not very stupid to me

  • hopefully this year wont be so bad

  • @mastax1234 i hope it dose not snow so bad this year

  • lol

  • weird

  • Because I happened to watch a video about a haunted house in Kentucky, Youtube recommended this to me. I will never forget this. Four days, as you said. Trees falling up and down the street all night long. Stage 1 hypothermia.

On the final day, a neighbor finally brought us a portable heater, since we couldn't get out. Since we only had Cheerio's to eat, a neighbor managed to figure a way to slowly make macaroni and cheese. As she came over, the power came back. We nearly cried.

  • My first warm meal was at the south side sonic. It was a chicken sandwhich. Playing in the snow got boring and i missed the internet. But we had all of our trees cut down so good thing because our house would have been damaged just as many others were.

  • @MrDoctorDalek We were very lucky with our home. We have 4 Oak Trees within feet of our home and if any of those would have come down, our house would have most likely been in the path. The only tree that came down missed our house by inches and only damaged our deck...thank god. It was pretty much living, freezing hell.

  • Ahhhh the memories of freezing my arse off for several days, to Hell with Survivor Man, I did it for real!........

  • Yupp. It was an amazing thing to live through. At least we can say that we survived through Kentucky's worst ice storm in history =)

  • Hopkins County here, entire county was without power, I didn't have power for more than 2 weeks.

  • I was without power for 3 weeks in Marshall County due to this ice storm. The electrical infrastructure was devastated

  • A Winter Ice Land Of Hell I think is a fitting term

  • Nicely put bud.

  • TYVM. lol

  • yea it suck but cool at same stime

  • i think the ice storm was a cool experience. it was kinda scary having no cell phone service though. especially since we live in a small place like paducah!

  • this was the worst time as a vol. firefighter i made around hundreth's run in the 2 weeks it was here pride it is gone

and hope it nevers comes back :)

  • I am proud to say at 14 years of age this was hell, except a lot lot colder! no internet and my substation exploded all night pink and green lights all night. i saw my tree explode and kill my trampoline. :( i also watched my generator explode. When power came back on i was like YES!!! :D

  • i also credit the volunteer power help. I had also heard the Comcast had helped by using their trucks and men to help with power. I talked to a few they said that this was worse than Hurricane Katrina. When they arrived (power technicians, tree removal, temporary shelters, etc.) everyone tried to help as much as possible. If a person that helped during Winter Storm 09' is reading this help in ANY way what so ever thank you very much you are the true heros and heroine of America.

  • Also the resilience of the ares affected really shows people helping others as best they could. Offering help to those even worse off than they are even though the do not have that much to give. In the aftermath an estimated average of 60% of Paducah and surrounding areas tree canopy was lost or so i have heard. Thank you for listening to my comment. Sincerely, Dolphinboy

  • I have to say you went through hell and somehow survived....

  • Ohh also what did you do the whole time?

  • @tookietookie123 I sat on my rear and did nothing. Watched my world fall apart. You know that kind of thing. I went to stay with my grandmother and we cooker on her ornimental fireplace (was a real fireplace but pitiful excuse for heat) kept house like 68 degrees F. Then we went to a hotel that took gods (at that time a had a rescued greyhound whom was put down earlier this year because of codial equenine (mispelled) it is a spinal injury common in large dogs. And my grandmother (now deceased).

  • I'm in Muhlenberg County and I was without power for 8 days. It was the longest 8 days of my life. I have lots of pictures from the Ice Storm. It was a beautiful vision but I never ever wanna see it again!!!!!!!

  • Dang...yes..the ice was very beautiful to look at..but was VERY, VERY bad! I was just amazed at the night sky being literally totally lit up almost like as if it was daytime at midnight! This was one of the worst experiences and I really hope it doesn't happen again.

  • I WAS THERE!!!

  • Wow, hate to sound like a broken record, but; "The Final Countdown"!?!? HANSON would have been more applicable, at least more up to date.

  • I used the song and it's over. I'm sorry for choosing a song you didn't like. It's over, forget it.

  • I loved the song!

  • did u really have to use that song?

i mean, really, what's "final countdown" have to do with ice storms, winter, cold and anything related? not to mention that although it was a great song back in the past, now it's getting boring.

no offence, but it woulda've been better without any music...

  • Wow.. Talk about lame music!=]

  • LOL!

  • we were off for 8 days and 8 hours it was a long cold 8 days lol watch my videos ppl i have an ice storm one!

  • Muhlenberg County here. Power was off two weeks. K.U. had an army of workers in here. We will never forget the feeling of "neighborhood" during this time. Country folk really do pull toghther in hard times. I told my son who's 15, he may never see an ice storm like that in his lifetime. Surreal absolutely surreal.

  • wow...I have heard many, many stories so far. It was quite the expirience...and I know I wont forget it....

  • wtf was with that they could of at lest warned us more !

  • I totally agree. They mentioned only about 1-2 days of SOME freezing precipitation falling and maybe 1-2 inches of snow after but heck they were MAJORLY off! The thing is, it trained through here and just was relentless, who would have really known...

  • I put up a video of my street, should be up soon. I didn't lose power somehow...

  • we didnt either

  • i saw my house on there! lol that storm sucked, im originally from florida so ice and me dont mix lol I ran for the hills when the power went out at my place, ended up in goreville ill. at friends house for weeks

  • LOL cool! Yeah, it did. Also, LOL I also used to live in Homestead, FL. We stayed and got through it okay. We couldnt leave anyway, there was no way since the alley was completely blocked and the power was out...

  • that first night 3 of our trees in our yard came down on the house, lucky for us it was minor damage but i have 3 kids and they were so scared...hell so was i lol so we took off in the van, i about got hit with a falling tree branch but my hubby pushed me outta the way...he so sweet!!

  • damn, that's like die hard or some shit

  • yea i live in murray..i was out of power for 14 days. this was crazy!!!!! we had to drive to marion il. just to get a genarator. we did that wed. (28th) night. there wasn't power until we hit the outskirts of paducah. and then it was like only lourdes (or however you spell it) that had power. no gas either

  • Nice slide show...was some fun times around here for a few days. I was without power for 16-17 days, still cleaning up debris to this day.

  • Yeah, I have heard my hand of stories from people who didnt have power for about a month...but it's just amazing how much people can come togethor in a time of need and pretty much survival. It was quite an amazing expirience.

  • 1 Word Max, WOW... This is just plain scary.. It brings scary reminders of the 2001 Summer Storms... Killed a innocent women at an amusement park and others. just WOW, i would've been scared to absoulute oblivion in a situation like this...

  • It's something I wont forget, I know that.

  • No doubt. The music really fits in well to this video as well. Also, that exact storm is definatly one not to forget, even for me. It caused at least 25 near deaths in the Pittsburgh area alone.. and 3 actual deaths due to very dangerous icy roads.. It was so bad, salt was doing a thing to the ice.. We got almost 2 inches of ice but thankfully, only about 25,000 were without power. Luckily, not me

  • Here about 800,000 people just in KY were out of power....

  • Thats Just Scary enough. The ice storm did do some damage here, but nothing like this. We did end up in a near state of emergency when the next storm front came and did some very very severe damage and killed many not just in PA but all throughout the Northeast as it got worse and worse as it worked the coast...

  • Yeah, we went into a state of emergency then we became a disaster zone. This was nuts...

  • 2001, PA went into a state of emergeny for 3 days straight due to such severe storms packing 120+ MPH winds!!

  • Wow looks like quite the storm. Reminds me of when it happened up here in Nh. Pretty crazy.

  • Yeah...

  • i had to go through it, without power for a whole week!!

  • Dang. Some of my neighbors did not have power for around 10-15 days. We live along a state road, so it was imperative to get the power on as soon as possible. But really, we had power on and off for the next 3-4 days. It was one heck of a storm.

  • it took 4 weeks to get our paower back...the whole box was ripped from our house...suched ass!!

  • O my gawd!!!! This is nuts!!! I was just out side of Indianapolis, Indiana when this ice storm hit and I barly missed gettting stuck in this storm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This ice storm was very not cool!!!! I think Jim Cantori from the weather channel actually reported live from Paducah, Kentucky when the storm hit.

  • Yep, he did. We were the main target, and gosh we got a heck of an beating. Didnt seem like much in the beginning, but the first 2 nights were a nightmare. You cannot imagine the feeling when you hear tree branches snaping, crackling, falling, rolling over your roof, puncturing it, etc. It seemed like a never ending first two nights. We had no power or anything we were all huddled around the fireplace, we were helpless....

  • Dang, like I said I was out side of Indianapolis, Indiana at the time and up in there it was lots, and lots, and lots of snow. I had to do some major shoveling of the drive way at my aunt's place, well over a foot of snow. Then on my way back west to Nevada I barly missed getting screwed by Tornados. On my way east I missed the ice storm in Tulsa by a few hours and on my way back west I missed Tornados by literly a matter of days, and people were killed by tornados in areas I had passed through.

  • DANG! Yea, Larry and I were watching those storms, it was quite amazing at their power. Glad you are allright.

  • Jim Cantori, or someone from the Weather Channel cameto report, it was so bad.

  • Yea it was Jim Cantori.

  • BTW, great post, BNSF. All the additional text info. you posted is great, too. Very impressive for someone only 14!

KY had over 1/2 million w/o power, total, I believe. We are in a rural area & finally have power back on for good (hoping!)

I have linked to this post on my website - hope you don't mind!

  • Thanks. Yeah, seems like some of the rural areas throughout Kentucky are expiriencing alot of power surges or just no power flat! Allright, yeah that's ok.

  • It was close enough to a war zone on Tuesday night (Jan. 27)! The only thing closer, that I've gone through, was a tornado that flattened our house when I was a kid. This was constant crashes, loud pops and cracks, thuds, and an occaisional house-shaker (those branches coming down weighed several times their normal weight.) Plus an occaisional flash as a transformer blew up. My wife would scream at me to come back in, every time I went out to make sure nothing had punched through the roof.

  • I know what you mean with the Ice Storm, but man, I don't know what I would do if I had to go through a tornado. But yeah, we heard everything you heard pretty much, like everyone else as well.

  • And it will be remembered in both Kentucky and Arkansas. I live in Arkansas and people who lived their since they were born said it was the worst they have ever seen. Same fear here was the trees falling on our houses. One almost hit my brother when we were outside checking out the area. Never went back outside after that. It will be remembered forever.

  • Yes, it will never be forgotten. His comment was horrible, I agree. No one has ever gone through anything like this, and it was a horrible expirience. It WAS a war zone.

  • I can't believe your comment guitarplayer7694...It was horrible and it was like a war zone. When those branches were falling down there couldn't be ANYONE outside, way to dangerous. But maybe if you were there, you would understand. And for your information, for some there were dead bodies. People froze to death or were killed by carbon monoxide so next time get more information before you talk about how we are...overexagerating? I dont know what you wanna call but who cares. Nice vid btw 5/5

  • I hate how people are using the phrase "like a war zone" it looks nothing like a war zone. Are dead bodies with magots crawling out of the eye sockets lying all about? no. Are there only small smoldering remains of once proud buildings scattered here and there? no what is there? Trees with their limbs fallen off? I would love to see a war with only that kind of aftermath.

  • Yeah, well people only said it when trees were falling and branches, etc. Too dangerous to go out. It SOUNDED and just SEEMED like a war zone. If you understand what I mean......

  • I live in Paducah myself and went through this. My grandmother even said herself that in the 32 years that she has lived here, she's never seen anything like this. Honestly, the first night I was at a friend's house in the woods somewhere. That was interesting to say the least... Definately an experience to remember and tell your kids. I too was one of the lucky few to get their power back... on either day 3 or day 4 I can't remember exactly.

  • Yeah. It seems like anyone that lives here says that they have never gone through such a ice storm as this. There was one guy I that has lived here all his life (he is about 65) says that he has NEVER been through anything like this. Even though I am only 14 right now, I know I will remember this for now on. All I hope is that there won't be anything as bad as this in the future, but you never know.. People that live behind our house and alot in our neighborhood still don't have power..

  • Oh jeez! We had it bad but you guys had it wayy worse. how many days out of school? I had 1 day of school last week, then I got 6 inches more on wednesday.

  • Yeah....I had 6 days off. 4 starting the 27th and then two this week.

  • Here is how bad it was I live a few Blocks from BNSF9192 and Wed morning after it stopped i Could not get down the street for all the trees and powerlines down. we were without power for 6 days and there are some that are still wothout.. CN hooked a generator up to their signal and crossing signal controllers

  • Yes, I heard that they had to hook up generators to Central, Pines, Allen, and S Yard junction. It has been a interesting two weeks....

  • Wow Amazing Video here Max. The info is just fanscinating! I haven't seen something like this since 95'

  • Yeah, it has been something....alot of people are still out of power it may take 1-2 months..... But I have power LUCKELY!

  • WOW! Now that takes me to the Summer of 2002.... Mircoburst hit the Pittsburgh area downing power lines, 70,75 mph winds. Baseball sized hail, Huge rainfalls. Tornados even here in PA. Power was out to well over 400,000+ people. It took amazing due to good weather, 3 months to restore power to everyone. 100,000 were restored within a week (My Area) then the other areas were harder due to being hit harder by the brunt of the storm. Now thats one to remember..

  • it looks like a picture someone showed me of Russia

  • never seen any thing like that !!!!@:-0 wow wonder how all the trees along the train tracks are doin lots a windshield wipers need be replacing ! :-)

  • LOL! Yeah, it was really something...

  • (its Ian) Imagine trying to ride a train in weather like this!

  • That looks way too cold...

  • HAHA, yes it does.

  • WOW! THIs seems all too familar. i live in ky. about 160 mi. from paudah and we didnt get hit tat hard. they got hit hardest in louisville

  • Yeah. Cool. But yeah, I think the Paducah area here, and Louisville area got hit very hard. We got about 2 1/2 inches of ice which was TOO MUCH

  • YEa. Last year tho. When i lived in louisville we got like 2 in of snow and 2 1/2 in. of ice and then bout 6-8 more in of snow on top of that it made great sledding waether!

  • HAHA, WOW! Sounds like it!

  • have fun making up school over the summer!!! lol

  • Dont need to now We are a disaster zone.

  • This says it all. It's been over a week since it hit and we are still without power.

  • wow. I am lucky since I got power only after 4 days.

  • I took lots of photos too but a lot of them didnt come out cuz my camera steamed over. Good job max. Ive had power since thursday and internet last night. Was out on the UPS truck yesterday. Its a mess we were backed up about 4 days. Will take probably the rest of the week to catch up.

  • WOW Michael!!! UPS will be backed up MAJORLY, lol. Well you all will get caught up soon enough. Also, too bad about the photos :(

  • Not to get off subject but did any trains roll through the area?

  • nothing ran until Saturday when the power had returned for the line to operate the crossing signals. But, the main reason was because the terminals were out of power as well as the plants, so nothing could unload.

  • Well I did sound like a dick asking you if any trains came through and I am sorry. So how are you managing buddy besides being cold as hell and not being able to sleep and all. I hope your ok now.

  • LOL, naa. Everything was ok, but yes it was COOOLLDDD!! All we had was the gas fireplace LOL. It got down to the teens and one night the single digits one night so it was hard to keep warm without power. But now we are good.

  • Well that is good. I am glad everything is back to normal for you buddy! :)

  • Thanks for sharing! You had more ICE than Sikeston, MO!

  • HA, wow. I saw the video response that you put on this. It has been one heck of a ice storm...

  • how many days out of school were you?

  • Well, I am still out of school. It will be a total of 7 days. 4 days starting Jan. 27 and then 2 days including today and tomorrow.

  • I know that when we had the Ice Storm in December, it looked like that, and we were out of power for a long time. (8 days). r u still out of power?

  • Yeah, this has been the worst ever here. Yeah, we were out of power for only 5 days, nothing too very major.

  • wow, it's scary to think about what could have happened, I'm very happy that you made it through ok Max.

  • Yeah, thanks. It was really something, and also excuse the very long description :p

  • damn...

  • yes, damn...

  • looks like my state after the storm

  • Yeah, it was hard to go through...
