Every country has to hold some dollars because it is the currency oil is bought in.

The Chinese have already floated the idea of it being another currency.

If they pull that off no one will have any reason to hold the dollar, because that's all that's holding it up.

Doesn't the Chinese rmb still have a fixed exchange rate to the dollar? If the Chinese were to let their currency to float, it might cause uncontrollable deflationary pressure. If I'm not talking entirely out of my ass, that static exchange rate might be partly behind the value of the dollar (in addition to being the oil & reserve currency).
