the waves can't technically be overtop of eachother they must be up, down, up, down.

but the line can't pass over itself

As for the line why not use a pencil and click on left then shift click on the right one perfect straight line and thickness you wish to set the brush size to.

AND TURN THE MUSIC OFF.

If you are attempting to make an audio wave form you have to learn about audio first

The waveform will only rise or lower there will not be any left or right movement.

Also the wave will be above and below a centre line if you wish it to look real.

Why do you make it so hard to open with a black page to start with.

Hit D to make colours default then X to swoop then make Ctrl+n to make New select new check background content to background colour and its done.

its juts an effect, dude. it doesn't matter if it's "totally" accurate to a real audio waveform.

it's just to make a cool effect is all.

maybe turn down the audio sound of the music as it was quite hard to hear in some places

Pressing Alt + Delete will fill your layer with the current foreground colour. It's faster that way.
