Thank you very much. Over a dozen of my Great-Grandmother's cousins served in several ALH regiments in WWI, in particular, Lt.Col.C.V.Single DSO, OBE, 4th ALH, he was MO at Beersheba. Merry Christmas.
If anyone is interested the name of the one horse that came back to Australia is Sandy, and it was the horse of General Bridges, who was wounded and subsequently died at Gallipoli. General Bridges is buried at RMC Duntroon in Canberra.
@0:37 that will be the 2nd Brigade Australian Light Horse, definitely the shot was taken on the Plain of Es-Dud/ Ash Dod in 1918, and Brigadier Ryrie is in the lead. Pretty impressive to think that this photo is of one of *five* Brigades of Australian Light Horse that fought in Palestine between 1916- 1918. Plus the Kiwis had a Brigade of Mounted Rifles, so together they made up the Australian Mounted Division and the ANZAC Mounted Division of the Desert Mounted Corps, under Lt Gen Chauvel.
Bless our Aussies mates ...dont forget that ANZAC means Australia New Zealand Army Corp....check the hats out on the pictures the ones turned up at the side are Aussies the ones not turned up are Kiwis we were in this thing together brothers on arms...
Should have chosen an Australian singer instead of Canada's pock marked wonder. Although, his face does look like an aerial photo of the Western front, with all that shelling.....
as a person whos parents were born in austrailia i take great pride in this. i may live in the U.S but i retainn my austrailian accent and my traditions. steve irwin was my hero. i am a us marine but i am an austrailian at heart.
Moakley, Checkout a song by Eric Bogle called "As if he knows." The song is about the horses they left behind. Because they weren't allowed to bring them home, and rather leaving them for the locals in the Middle East to mistreat and work them to death they shot them. Because they loved their horses so much, they couldn't shoot their own horses so they got their best mates to shoot each others horses. A very moving song I sook up every time I hear it. By the way this vid was great. Well done.
@moakley Most of them took their horses into the desert and shot them. This was to avoid leaving them to be mistreated by the local natives. Kiwis did as well
Just a point of interest: the shot at 0:38 is the 2nd Brigade of the AHL of the ANZAC Mounted Division (Desert Mounted Corps), commanded by Brigadier Ryrie, and taken at the plain of Es dud (Ash Dod) in Northern Palestine 1918. Australia had 5 Brigades in Palestine by the wars end.
heart breaking ... the tears from my eyes can be compared to the needle in my hearth everytime i hear this :'(
it makes me think back in time from a long period of sadness and depresions for over 2 years... the comback in the song is amazing.. realy brings me to belive in myself...and the history about the Australian men and horses... just bring forth a tear :'( abselut the best song ever ! 10/10
Very moving tribute to men AND horses. Of course, the animals did not volunteer. Seems I saw something recently that in London they just commemorated a monument to the horses of the Great War. Fitting as we approach the death of the last human veterans.
thank you. I believe the horses were just as worthy of glory as the soldiers that rode them. That is great to hear they have been acknowledged. With the very few veterans remaining, it feels that the end is coming to an era and i just hope that these people will never be forgotten.
The only one that returned from War was Sandy, who belonged to General Bridges. I think, but I'm not sure, that he was retired and many of the veterans visited him as a way to overcome their grief in later years. I can't remember the name of the place they retired him.
Thank you. (: Yeah makes me proud to be Australian too. We have a great military history and i just love the bravery and patriotism displayed by the ANZACs, the best representatives this country's ever had.
They are national heroes. Everything the military stands for now was built on the foundations of the ANZAC legend and legacy. May they rest in peace and God bless.
haha thanks! (: I am working on more at the moment lol. if u want to check out my brother's channel, he's got a vid of us with the light horse troop. He is NXClass.
Major Oliver Hogue, of the 14th Regiment Australian Light Horse, having survived three years of total war in the middle-east campaign, died in a London hospital in March 1919- one of many Australian soldiers never to see home again, and one of millions to die in the Spanish Influenza pandemic that swept Europe after the war. He was thirty-nine years of age.
Thank you very much. Over a dozen of my Great-Grandmother's cousins served in several ALH regiments in WWI, in particular, Lt.Col.C.V.Single DSO, OBE, 4th ALH, he was MO at Beersheba. Merry Christmas.

I actually thought that it was over 100,000 horses. Remember "Trooper Bluegum"s poem?
wattlebough 3 years ago
In days to come we'll wander west and cross the range again;
We'll hear the bush birds singing in the green trees after rain:
We'll canter through the Mitchell grass and breast the bracing wind;
But we'll have other horses. Our chargers stayed behind.
Around the fire at night we'll yarn about old Sinai;
We'll fight our battles o'er again; and as the days go by
There'll be old mates to greet us. The bush girls will be kind.
Still our thoughts will often wander to the horses left behind.
wattlebough 3 years ago
I don't think I could stand the thought of my old fancy hack
Just crawling round old Cairo with a 'Gyypo on his back.
Perhaps some English tourist out in Palestine may find
My broken hearted Waler with a wooden plough behind.
No I think I'd better shoot him and tell a little lie:
'He floundered in a wombat hole and then lay down to die'
Maybe I'll get court-martialled; but I'm damned if I'm inclined
To go back to Australia...and leave my horse behind.
Major Oliver Hogue "Trooper Bluegum".
