I think you find this ad in the dictionary under hyperbole. America couldn't "cut the mustard" anymore, which is why Chrysler and GM went bankrupt. They just kept making crap, throwaway cars and lying to the public telling them how they were going to change everything and make them better. We owned a lot of American cars in the '80s and '90s and none live up to the hyperbole.
Iacocca was visionary in creating the front-wheel-drive minivan, still a staple today. The "entire front-wheel-drive" format is copied today by GM and Ford save for SUV's and muscle cars. He did a bunch with so little and set the way.
Poor Iacocca's dream. Chrysler hasn't gotten a goddamned bit better since this ad was made. Yet the government bailed them out a second time. And boy, was that fuckin' worth it... /sarcasm
chrysler Made a Huge comeback in the 1980s and they were doing Great but The 1990s Era Spoiled everything..Quality Degraded and Reliability Has been Awful ever since ..After He Left (1992) By the MId 1990s They Had Gone Backwards and Had Allot Of Junk...Just Look at caravan,Stratus..Intrepid...ETC...1980s were Great...They had gone backwards in the 1990s and Built some real JUNK!
The confidence with which he endorses shitty front-wheel-drive technology and weak-sauce four-cylinder engines is truly something else. The K-Cars were great money-makers in that they were boring-ass cars that were perfect for people who didn't give a shit about cars, which is almost everybody. After they were done picking themselves back up with the K-Cars, they finally got around to making exciting and interesting cars for car people and non-car-people alike.
Well. He was right, and guess what? Chrysler put their minds too it, and they sold shit tons of those cars. Saved them... Why doesn't Chrysler start making little cars (that don't look like shit, Ex. Caliber). Make a Dodge Omni that looks good and gets better gas mileage than a Golf... We don't want big fucking cars anymore if gas keeps going up pass the $3.50 / Gallon mark. Make it reliable, and fuel efficient and it'll sell...
The most boring cars in the history of the planet, and this guy makes them sound like they're the hottest shit in town. Imagine what sort of volume he could move with a '68 Charger parked behind him.
If Chrysler only made those cars again that were actually reliable like their '80s K Car Ancestors, that got around 30 mpg City, and 50 - 52 mpg highway, I would gladly get one instead of a Toyota Corolla... Not dissing Corollas 'cause they are great cars!
@superamerica1981 Very true, but....When he tried to get back into Chrysler in the early 1990's, many inside the company were afraid he'd "go backwards" to the K-car days. True the K was a huge success and well thought out car...for 1981. But many corporate guys were afraid Lee would slap vinyl roofs and whitewall tires on the soon-to-be born LH body cars. I'm sorry but you are 100% WRONG. Lee did NOT ever consider running for office. It was a rumor started by a newspaper. Read Lee's autobiography. One of the best "All American" stories available.
I'd rather for Ford to buy Chrysler & GM the the Japs & Europeans. what ever happen to "The Great American Car"? (Excuding Ford). I completely understand & i feel your pain on this issue.
the great american car? It disappeared when they created all those stupid non-reliable cars in the 90's. Why do you think hondas and toyotas are popular? Cause they don't have those stupid transmission problems, that's only one huge difference right there. Any mecanic knows it.
its 2/3 so thats why we are worrying about about the other 2... i am not too worried about ford right now, because they are doing great, and rivaling quality in japanese cars
Chrysler products are great! I've owned enough to know. I still drive a 2000 Ram with over 140,000 miles that looks and drives new. I wouldn't buy anything else.............
@invicta62 it was just a joke i have got a dodge caravan with 350000 miles on it. still running, an 85 dodge ram, still running, and a 2001 durango with 150000 miles on it. I am a chrysler fan
@tubageek2006 That's great to hear!! It's too bad the people buying Odeseys (Hondas) don't make the Caravan #1 again...................I guess brainwashing works.
@invicta62 it was just a joke i have got a dodge caravan with 350000 miles on it. still running, an 85 dodge ram, still running, and a 2001 durango with 150000 miles on it. I am a Chrysler fan
My first car was a 2000 Stratus that my parents had since it was new and then they gave me when I entered to college. Even if I didn´t give a dime for any Chrysler/Dodge product at that time, this car made me think twice and now I have a totally different idea. That car was excellent until the day I sold it. 100 000 trouble free miles.
Some days I still see it on the street, still strong as when it was mine.
As a loyal Ford Guy all my natural life. I am so dissapointed With GM for one for not doing their homework when the "Japs" inported their cars into this country & Chrysler for selling out to Fiat...."FIAT"!. What are you kidding me? For years to come we will "Not" know Chrysler as we now know it. So Sad. I'm just glad that Ford is now the "Only" American car company who didn't ask for a handout from Anyone. Both GM & Chrysler neet to take Que Lessons from Ford.
yeah! he was amazing... he made the mustang, the k car, the caravan... he was amazing... designers now a days, for no matter which company, all copy each other... i wish he came back too
The Ford Fiesta is very German, and thats the direction Ford is heading. I had a 91 Gran Prix, a 88 K car, and a 96 Neon. All garbage from the bottom up eventually. Went and got a 92 BMW 318i and it "out everythinged" those American junkers I wasted money on and got ripped off. Ever since then I've stayed German. Currently have an 07 Rabbit, easily 30mpg at 80mph in cruise, can out handle anything America or Japan can throw at it, and will out run most cars in its class including some USA v6's
My 91 Gran Prix killed itself while I was changing lanes.... the engine seized up a month after I did new spark plugs, oil, new belts etc etc the usual (I guess) dam near killed me on the highway... Yea and the Neon my brother and I had wouldn't stop "ticking" NO MATTER WHAT we did or paid to have it inspected!!!! come to find out it was something inside the block?? (at least thats what dodge said)...... one day the car just wouldn't start up and became home to mildew and bees.
Dodge/Chrysler are my favorite. Its the Gov fault that this is happening to the US automakers. Chrysler is Way Better then what has been happening the past decade. Hybird Trains at an industrial scale in use since the 60's. The Toyota hybird on a small scale did not beat American automakers, the Tech has been here. The US Gov got in the way. They Do Not Want Us to Make/Build Things in this Country, Thats y Fiat got Chrysler not an American Company. Sad days 4 America, & very hard times 2 come
I wouldn't go that far, but I agree that the UAW has contributed to the big three's problems. I think Robert Farago of The Truth About Cars put it perfectly when he said, "The UAW is a dinosaur and a cancer."
The death of Chrysler is probably the greatest government-induced corporate failure, ever. GM is close on their heals. The White House continues to refuse to honor Ford warranties, bizarrely denying Ford employees equal protection under the law--an apparent attempt keep the playing field as leveled as the state-run economy. Assuming one characterizes killing 2 out of the previous Big 3, in a couple of months, an "economy."
The White House has NOT refused to back Ford's warranties, Ford has refused to accept government assistance. Also, Chrysler is not necessarily going away, bankruptcy is being used as a tool to fix the companies cost structure.
It is a hard call. But I believe that perhaps that when the economy turns around, if GM and Chrysler don't get their shit together, Obama will just go, "Well, I tried" and let them fail.
That's a very real possibility and frankly if they don't get their shit together and the economy has moved on they can fail and they should fail. The govt certainly shouldn't be in the business of running auto companies for any long stretch of time. But I think these harsh economic times, giant cuts and broken contracts might actually speed up and make possible some of the reforms that would have been necessary (if perhaps not possible) anyway so it might actually be an opportunity.
The reason why the Gov' Ment is not sticking their nose in Ford's business is because Ford refused a bailout, and it seems that having the government step in is the last thing Mulally wants. Besides, Ford looks like they can get themselves back into the black on their own. That is why Ford is winning countless customers from GM and Chrysler.
That's not entirely true though. The bailout of Chrysler and especially GM was indirectly a bailout of Ford as well. If GM would have failed I very much doubt Ford would still be here today. No doubt Ford is in better shape than the others though.
Ford gets hurt both ways. Even with the bailout, Ford is still getting hurt, because the auto industry crisis is caused by market oversaturation. By keeping Chrysler and GM alive, they aren't giving Ford the room it needs to survive.
Sure the domestics structural problem is market over saturation (at least when it comes to their niche) however the last two years they were turning things around at least they had (some) time on their side and thus a chance. The present problem however and the real crisis is completely due to the credit crunch induced recession. The US auto market went from 14 million to 9 million, what's a market that's over-saturated at 14 million when you slash 5 million from it? In crisis.
Yesterday, April 30 of 2009; Chrysler went into bankruptcy. Lets help Chrysler Corporation buying their cars instead of all that asian crap that is now running on our highways.
Say what you want; Iacocca was honest, smart, and a true hero. Chrysler's position today is an insult to the hard work he did. I'd be surprised if he doesn't wake up every morning and shake his head at the cowardice and stupidity of his successors. By the way, they failed once, not ones. A person incapable of writing a coherent sentence has no right to insult Lee Iacocca.
No they succeeded then and maybe they will succeed again, this time around though it's Fiat I guess the real Chrysler legacy is gone. But in 1984 Chrysler was the most profitable of all car companies. The SUV laziness has killed the American car industry (or at least brought it to it's deathbed) but Ford is in okay shape and has some excellent vehicles coming up & out (Taurus, Milan and the Euro Fords), GM the same, Chrysler..... Not so much but Fiat definitely gives it potential.
It's a shame though that GM in particular had to soak billions of losses and extremely crappy car before it is finally just now getting it's act together in vehicle quality. The CTS-V and G8 GXP are amazing cars both of them dead now because they came far too late in an economic climate not suited for them (performance cars) but also the new Malibu. But again the entire Chrysler lineup is crap and they'll have to start from scratch and hope Fiat (Alfa Romeo) can save them.
I don't agree with you. Chrysler cars are great products. Jeeps are outstanding SUV's, and Dodges great performance cars. The main problem here is an unfair market. The cheap Japanese imports are pos'es, but they're cheap. Why? Because US companies care about their employees while the Japanese don't give a shit. Next to that the US car industry restrictions are much higher. That brings much higher costs and makes it hard, if not impossible to compete on price.
Right but SUVs and performance cars are irrelevant right now (disagree about Jeeps anyway). Chrysler, and all the big three failed because of legacy cost. They have a whole truckload of liabilities to pay the japanese don't have to. This explains both their glory in the past and failure today.
Because basically they financed the past with the present by promising all kinds of benefits to their employees in return for more attractive wages at the time. The boring Japcrap is better value. Though as I said Ford and GM had a few excellent models just coming out.
I want to have some of what you are having. Yeah, Chrysler built great cars IN THE 90s, but their current product line up is shit. I have sat in all of them (And have driven a couple), and their current product line up (with the exception of perhaps the Grand Cherokee, Sprinter, 300/Charger, Challenger and Wrangler) is shit. And the only good models they have are niche products that won't bring in the profits. So yeah, Chrysler would be better off if they just sold reconditioned Intrepids!
Actually I'm considering buying a new Dodge Avenger. And I like the new Sebring as well. I don't know if you've driven those cars, but I really liked them. I see no reason to call them shit. And yes, the 300 is awesome!
Exactly I got a 2007 Sebring Sedan it's a winner. And yes I love the 300 which is awesome, too. Of course the 80s was an awesome time for Chrysler but Chrysler will be making a comeback thanks to Fiat.
I agree with you. People only buy all that Japanese shit because of the way there advertised. They don't realize that American cars are actually of good quality and that there are bad Japanese cars. I bet one day some many Americans will be bitchin at the Japanese for giving them crappy cars.
They (nor GM or Ford) did ever build a small car to compete against the Japanese. Otherwise Toyota and Honda wouldn't be the size that they are today.
Lee Iacocca said in his autobiography that he would only be President if he was appointed and then only for 1 year. He said the job made you old.
BTW, in 1984, the term "minivan" hadn't been coined yet. Iacocca called it a "wagon" cos nobody else knew what to call it at the time. Chrysler had that market pretty much to themselves until Honda came up with the Odyssey.
Our government didn't bail Chrysler out years ago. Someone from the private sector did, Lee Iacocca. We have already started to resemble a socialistic nation. Talks of a new world order and a one world currency, wars and terror are more prevalent than ever before. We are definitely in the end times. Get your lives right with God because His Son Jesus is coming for His saints soon. I know this has nothing to do with this but I don't care, your souls are more important than political correctness.
Your following message: "Unfortunately, GM is beyond saving at this point. It is hopelessly insolvent thanks to Rick and his posse driving it right into the ground."
Response: Then I hereby welcome the both of us into "Great Depression II." I will solemnly miss GM. (It's sad because I hoped to get an Onstar service in a GM vehicle one day, but what other companies give Onstar-like services?)
I hate when people say what you say. GM going down will not land us into another great Depression. They are not as important as they think they are. Surely, Michigan (where I live) will be fucked, but it would barely effect the rest of the nation. Thus why the rest of the nation's reps just said, "screw all of you!" when the big three came begging for a bailout.
I live in SC. and down here though this state kiss[s] auto co[s] ass[s] as far as tax breaks to build cars here. As we is a fuck the people ....''right-to-work'' state so us deep south workers get humped. U up north had it good...butt got screwed by the big shots behind the desks.
Such a shame that the person who Iaccoca appoointed to persident of Chrysler, Robert Eaton, would throw all of his hard work down the drain and ruin chrysler quality
Most people don't realize that, because Chrysler became a powerhouse under Eaton. But that was because of Bob Lutz, Tom Gale, and the rest of the development team. Eaton just beancounted the cars to death and then threw them off to Daimler. Bob Eaton should die of AIDS and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie, son?
A great CEO and car man.

I am tired of people acting like GM and Chrysler are the entire auto industry. Even if they go down we will still have Ford.
TheNostalgiaSpot 2 years ago 3
I'd rather for Ford to buy Chrysler & GM the the Japs & Europeans. what ever happen to "The Great American Car"? (Excuding Ford). I completely understand & i feel your pain on this issue.
Dkels219 2 years ago
the great american car? It disappeared when they created all those stupid non-reliable cars in the 90's. Why do you think hondas and toyotas are popular? Cause they don't have those stupid transmission problems, that's only one huge difference right there. Any mecanic knows it.

Thunderbunny17 2 years ago
what went wrong with your 1988 k car?? was it an dodge aries k or a Plymouth reliant k ??
jakesaintsrow123 2 years ago
My 91 Gran Prix killed itself while I was changing lanes.... the engine seized up a month after I did new spark plugs, oil, new belts etc etc the usual (I guess) dam near killed me on the highway... Yea and the Neon my brother and I had wouldn't stop "ticking" NO MATTER WHAT we did or paid to have it inspected!!!! come to find out it was something inside the block?? (at least thats what dodge said)...... one day the car just wouldn't start up and became home to mildew and bees.

Very timely commercial. You really could apply all the points made to today's situation. Too bad Chrysler is in the toilet now!

TheNostalgiaSpot 2 years ago
The death of Chrysler is probably the greatest government-induced corporate failure, ever. GM is close on their heals. The White House continues to refuse to honor Ford warranties, bizarrely denying Ford employees equal protection under the law--an apparent attempt keep the playing field as leveled as the state-run economy. Assuming one characterizes killing 2 out of the previous Big 3, in a couple of months, an "economy."
huskie767 2 years ago
The White House has NOT refused to back Ford's warranties, Ford has refused to accept government assistance. Also, Chrysler is not necessarily going away, bankruptcy is being used as a tool to fix the companies cost structure.
Yorkfield45NM 2 years ago 2
WTF? These companies were dead months ago, before the govt saved them. What happens now I guess we'll see.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
It is a hard call. But I believe that perhaps that when the economy turns around, if GM and Chrysler don't get their shit together, Obama will just go, "Well, I tried" and let them fail.
TheNostalgiaSpot 2 years ago
@Nostalgic
That's a very real possibility and frankly if they don't get their shit together and the economy has moved on they can fail and they should fail. The govt certainly shouldn't be in the business of running auto companies for any long stretch of time. But I think these harsh economic times, giant cuts and broken contracts might actually speed up and make possible some of the reforms that would have been necessary (if perhaps not possible) anyway so it might actually be an opportunity.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
The reason why the Gov' Ment is not sticking their nose in Ford's business is because Ford refused a bailout, and it seems that having the government step in is the last thing Mulally wants. Besides, Ford looks like they can get themselves back into the black on their own. That is why Ford is winning countless customers from GM and Chrysler.
TheNostalgiaSpot 2 years ago
@TheNostalgiaSpot
That's not entirely true though. The bailout of Chrysler and especially GM was indirectly a bailout of Ford as well. If GM would have failed I very much doubt Ford would still be here today. No doubt Ford is in better shape than the others though.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
Ford gets hurt both ways. Even with the bailout, Ford is still getting hurt, because the auto industry crisis is caused by market oversaturation. By keeping Chrysler and GM alive, they aren't giving Ford the room it needs to survive.
TheNostalgiaSpot 2 years ago
@TheNostalgia
In crisis.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
Anyway without the suppliers that depend on GM and thus without GM Ford would be dead yesterday.

If you don't deserve to PHAIL, no one does.
SilasX 2 years ago
@SilasX
Not so much but Fiat definitely gives it potential.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
It's a shame though that GM in particular had to soak billions of losses and extremely crappy car before it is finally just now getting it's act together in vehicle quality. The CTS-V and G8 GXP are amazing cars both of them dead now because they came far too late in an economic climate not suited for them (performance cars) but also the new Malibu. But again the entire Chrysler lineup is crap and they'll have to start from scratch and hope Fiat (Alfa Romeo) can save them.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
I don't agree with you. Chrysler cars are great products. Jeeps are outstanding SUV's, and Dodges great performance cars. The main problem here is an unfair market. The cheap Japanese imports are pos'es, but they're cheap. Why? Because US companies care about their employees while the Japanese don't give a shit. Next to that the US car industry restrictions are much higher. That brings much higher costs and makes it hard, if not impossible to compete on price.
McVaio 2 years ago
Right but SUVs and performance cars are irrelevant right now (disagree about Jeeps anyway). Chrysler, and all the big three failed because of legacy cost. They have a whole truckload of liabilities to pay the japanese don't have to. This explains both their glory in the past and failure today.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
Because basically they financed the past with the present by promising all kinds of benefits to their employees in return for more attractive wages at the time. The boring Japcrap is better value. Though as I said Ford and GM had a few excellent models just coming out.
ipbalkenende 2 years ago
I want to have some of what you are having. Yeah, Chrysler built great cars IN THE 90s, but their current product line up is shit. I have sat in all of them (And have driven a couple), and their current product line up (with the exception of perhaps the Grand Cherokee, Sprinter, 300/Charger, Challenger and Wrangler) is shit. And the only good models they have are niche products that won't bring in the profits. So yeah, Chrysler would be better off if they just sold reconditioned Intrepids!
TheNostalgiaSpot 2 years ago
Actually I'm considering buying a new Dodge Avenger. And I like the new Sebring as well. I don't know if you've driven those cars, but I really liked them. I see no reason to call them shit. And yes, the 300 is awesome!
McVaio 2 years ago
Exactly I got a 2007 Sebring Sedan it's a winner. And yes I love the 300 which is awesome, too. Of course the 80s was an awesome time for Chrysler but Chrysler will be making a comeback thanks to Fiat.
Heegoop 2 years ago
I agree with you. People only buy all that Japanese shit because of the way there advertised. They don't realize that American cars are actually of good quality and that there are bad Japanese cars. I bet one day some many Americans will be bitchin at the Japanese for giving them crappy cars.

Like right now five years of shitty cars and Trucks

And we'll never see the Chevy Volt. :'(

Such a shame that the person who Iaccoca appoointed to persident of Chrysler, Robert Eaton, would throw all of his hard work down the drain and ruin chrysler quality
Toyotaminivans 2 years ago
Most people don't realize that, because Chrysler became a powerhouse under Eaton. But that was because of Bob Lutz, Tom Gale, and the rest of the development team. Eaton just beancounted the cars to death and then threw them off to Daimler. Bob Eaton should die of AIDS and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie, son?
