An epic call by a HHOF voice like ONLY Bob Cole has. I discovered HNIC on CBC back when I moved from L.A. to Port Townsend, Washington (yes, a border state) in 1987, and was fortunate to get CBUT Channel 2 in Vancouver on cable here (before getting a dish) and have always known HNIC has the best coverage and Bob Cole is a huge part of it.
Fortunate to have grown up here in Michigan with CBC on Channel 9. Having Bruce Martyn & Budd Lynch do Wings' games. Bill Hewitt, Danny Gallivan, Don Wittman on HNIC. Bob Cole ranks right there with them. One of the alltime best! And thanks for not having Borshevsky's goal on here. Seen that one TOO many times....haha. Breaks my heart everytime.

Nobody could capture the heart and drama of a hockey game like Bob Cole. The great thing about the announcers we grew up with in the 90s is that they knew how to tell the story. Same went for the NBA on NBC during the Jordan years with Marv Albert/Bob Costas, and even Jim Hughson calling Jays games during the Alomar years. So sad that those days are gone. I've heard good voices in today's sports, but none with the storytelling abilities of announcers in the 90s.
Im not Canadian so I haven't got to hear Bob Cole as much as I would like but he is the best play-by-play guy Ive heard since I started watching the NHL 23 years ago. Doc Emrick makes me want to puke. I would rather hear fingernail on a blackboard for 2 1/2 hours then hear Doc, Edzo, & Pierre blow each other on NBC.

@FozzieBear8 It was an amazing save, no question. Edmonton caught the Stars right before they were ready to become a great team. They were good, but not great, in 97 hell Andy Moog was their goalie. Then the Stars went and got Ed Belfour and went to three straight conference finals, two Stanley Cup Finals and won a Cup and they beat the Oilers like a drum thereafter.
Bob Cole is one of the reasons why I want to become a hockey play-by-play some day. The calls he makes definitely makes the game much more enjoyable.
he is definitely not the brightest commentator and he is certainly no Jim Hughson but I have to hand it to the old guy, he does have a voice that makes totally boring and uneventful games sound interesting
@zonkedforlife2 Jim Hughson is awful. He and Craig Simpson are two of THE most boring play-by-play and color commentators on the planet! As much as I hate Pierre McGuire I now watch the Stanley Cup Finals on NBC to hear the legend and far superior Doc Emrick do the games. CBC, for the love of God, let Cole return to the Final or at least try to get someone like Gary Thorne to do the games.

Like many commenters, I grew up with Bob and Harry calling Leaf games on Saturday nights. Best compliment I can give- this video to me ranks just a shade under "Wendel Clark All Heart"

Emrick on NBC is miles better than Hughson. CBC was at its best when you had Cole, Wittman and Cuthbert as your top three and Hughson was a distant fourth. The biggest mistake they EVER made was letting Cuthbert go to TSN.
How can you not include the call of the Sundin goal late in the third period against Carolina in 2002? ("And the place goes crazy!!") Unforgettable moment!
Sick post. Absolutely love Bob Cole. Grew up with that voice and his great calls. I could care less if he gets the names wrong once in awhile. Who cares, its about portraying the feeling of the game and the atmosphere of the rink he is in so everyone can feel like their in attendance. Best ever, no one else has a sniff.
The best that ever was.......can't believe he doesn't do the final anymore and they handed it over to the clearly inferior Hughson.
Even if he gets the names wrong occasionally these days, no one has a better hockey voice and elevates the level of excitement in a hockey game, esp in the playoffs, than Bob Cole.....thanks for posting....amazing!!!
