The part with the rats always frightened me when I was a child, though they still do, I feel so bad for Tom when I was young I wished I could've helped him. It's sort of disturbing that these rats ate cats, it's quite scary.

Man this story freaked me out when I was a kid. Two nasty rats trying to eat the kitten while the kitten is fully aware that it might get eaten.

I love those Old testament-esque children stories. The ones that serve as a warning and had an ugly side. Those were the best because they both terrified and fascinated you. Even today I still remember this particular story.

@horseluverdyke Perhaps in real life, but for a nervous mother worried that her mischievous kittens will be caught and eaten by rats while she's not looking, I think it's perfectly understandable--in a locked cupboard, it would be too difficult and annoying for the rats to try and get to them, especially with their mother standing right there!
