Phenomenal drummer and my favorite that has ever played with Pearl Jam. As far as Ed & Jeff vs Dave? We love them all and being in a touring band isn't easy. It's a real shame it didn't work... a reunion would be AWESOME!
He talks the talk and walks the walk! I remember seeing PJ in San Diego on their 'VS' tour. After the warm up act was finished I was walking the halls and my friend say's "Isn't that the drummer"? Dave immediately stopped and approached us and we talked for thirty minutes. He parted saying "Make sure you have a great time tonight and enjoy the show"! Dave was THE best drummer to ever play with that band and even my guitar player friends couldn't get over how incredible he made them sound!
Hmmm. I gotta say I agree with most of you guys. I've always loved PJ, but after they fired Dave they definitely lost something they never got back. It sucks, but it's true.
Here's my take why PJ (i.e. Eddie Vedder)fired their best drummer ever: Kobain called them 'corporate Grunge',Vedder fell for it hooker line and sinker and PJ became his vehicle, purposely 'simplifying' (for the worse) their music in order to gain 'alternative credibility '.So what if he owed a gun? just tell him to keep it at home! after Vs. PJ was never the same. Matt C.'s awesome ,but stylistically belongs in another great Seattle band: Soundgarden.
@tiluriso interesting theory, but Dave would have likely quit if he weren't fired. Eddie and Jeff are friends of family, not like i talk to them all the time, but i do have a small tie. Dave was let go because he didn't like the direction the music had taken and he wanted nothing to do with their prolonged Ticketmaster feud, among other personal differences. I agree 100% that during Vitalogy eddie took over much of the writing & they were never the same :( this last album isn't too bad, though.
Like many of you stated before me so eloquently, he was PJ's best drummer ever. Matt Cameron is a fantastic drummer as well, but stylistically not a perfect match, he is underused w/ PJ in my opinion; like you all said ,he really belongs in one band:Soundgarden.
I always felt he was the best drummer PJ ever had. Matt C. is good but he is and will always be Soundgarden. This guy is and will always be PJ's best drummer. Period.
soundgarden reunite and matt cameron is already playing with soundgarden they did they're 1rst reunion show on 16 april this year , so that means that pearl jam have to look a new drummer? i hope he come back to pearl jam , matt cameron belong to soundgarden and dave abbruzzese belongs to pearl jam
Dave Abbruzzese is the greatest drummer ever. Perfect technique especially on the hats and crashes. Great fills and riffs. Definitely my biggest inspiration. Pearl jam have lost so much since his departure, and i'm sure they know it, just don't want to talk about it! They have lost all the power they used to have when dave a was around. Matt Cameron is a great drummer, he's just not right in pearl jam (kind of lame in pearl jam), as opposed to dave who was PERFECT for the band.
The last 30 seconds of rearviewmirror are godly. Serious raw emotion form a drummer. Godly. there's been nothing in the PJ catalogue like it since. They have something great, but different now.
though I absolutely love Pearl Jam to this day, after reading up on their history.....Dave was never given a fair shake. From everything I've read(and granted, it may not be all true), Eddie really treated Dave like complete shit.
i thought dave krusen and jack irons were the `better` pearl jam drummers........dave abbruzzese was great but musically he is lacking....ooooooh hope i dont get a spanking
I always thought Abbruzzese's take on the songs off of "Ten" were a lot better than Krusen's. That and stuff like "State of Love and Trust" and the stuff on "Vs."
Just listen to the official music video for "Even Flow". Although, realistically, it's mostly preference.
@rickdafrog In fairness to Jack, he was only standing in and he was standing in for a very popular drummer. He was bound to of gotten stick for it(pardon the pun). Jack has been around for years too and that doesn't happen if you don't have both skills and smarts. I agree, Dave was a great addition to PJ,, but credit to Jack too.
@mapex1973 i can not like your comment more than say yesyesyesyesyesyes...the only one was Dave! the others are only 2. classes...good but only classes...irons...
HE didn't leave the band. PJ kicked him out. Eddie had bad feelings about him and didn't like him. They had clashing personalities and views on things. Dave is very outgoing and ready to immerse himself in fame and parties, while Eddie is shy and hesitant to put himself in the spotlight.
that still shouldn't have got him kicked out. it's like they all had to agree with Eddie just to keep the harmony which is bullshit. a band doesn't have to be a bunch of clones. I've always kinda thought, from the information we fans have been provided, that Dave kinda got screwed.
his personality was incompatible to eddie's and stone's but mainly eddie's.
he wanted to fully immerse himself in the fame and rock stardom whereas eddie was from vs onwards constantly battling the rise of fame and the effects on his own personal life, whereas dave would love it.
some examples are when dave brought a gun into rehearsal and the band are pro guncontrol.
WTF? Is this recent? If so, Dave looks exactly the same as he did 15 years ago LOL! Love his drumming. Would love to see an instructional vid from him - like the Jeff Porcaro one.
@Hagios85 But he didn't even play on the first album. Amazing drummer though. Jack was great, although completely different. I think Matt, although probably the best technically of all PJ's drummers, is totally not suited to the band. He was perfect in Soundgarden. The thing people forget is that in a band you have to spend a lot of your life with the people and if you don't like them it becomes impossible. From what I gather there were personality issues, regardless of Dave's great drumming.
Awesome! I remember in '92, I was taping something on T.V, fell asleep and accidently taped the P.Jam Unplugged session. Watched it next day, was absolutely mesmerized by Dave's attitude, movements and ability. I picked the sticks the next day and have drumming for 12 years. Before every gig, I always envision his playing and use that image as inspiration. Greatest drummer I've ever heard/seen ..
Thanks for taking the time to upload this video. Please upload anything else you might have!!
Dave A - How I fucking miss your drumming in my favourite band Pearl Jam. ALways Number 1 Man in my books. You're the fucking Man Dave! All the best Dude.
I get the same sense about him. Just the way he reminises about those days....you can tell he misses being a part of that band. It's to bad it didn't work out. He seems like a really cool guy that understands how important the music was and is to people. Keep drumming Dave!
Wow, Im not a drummer, but a huuge PJ fan since 92...and I love Dave A's style, thanks for putting up this interview, its cool to hear him and see how cool of a guy he was. I was crackin up when he brought up the "jam" part of Pearl Jam back in the day, I always say they lost that when Dave A left.
