@CapyGuy Well, obviously the Super Star Destroyer is a beast and vastly outclasses the Yamato in firepower... BUT... if the Yamato manages to hit the SSD with the wave motion gun, the SSD is gone. As you can see here (watch?v=ty-1zWsXFNs) the wave motion gun is able to destroy a floating continent... so yes, it's able to destroy the SSD too. ^_^

It only had the power to crack a planet, but it's still pretty up there, and (unlike the Wave Motion Gun), it did not render the Eclipse useless after firing. The Eclipse was still battle-worthy.

Looking from an In-Universe perspective, I believe that Macross would much rather form an alliance with Yamato, and vice-versa. Why would two earth ships whose crew believe in justice and being friendly even bother to fight each other?
From a production point of view, I think that Macross might have never made it to the US if it wasn't for Yamato.
I see where you say the huge blind spot, The 18 inch deck guns don't need complete coverage, i can see how that can be a problem, but basiaclly the 16 inch to 18 inch deck guns have 180 degrees ov coverage. the blindspot is covered by smaller yet dangerous guns and anti aircraft batteries. but it's a cartoon so people tend to over think the whole thing anyway
I think the "blind spot" ghosterdude is referring to is the underside of the ship; the show was always animated as if space had a "surface" like the ocean, so ships always engaged each other horizontally as if they were floating, and the Yamato's main guns only had to be able to fire ahead, astern and slightly above. Of course, if the Gamilons had thought it thru all they had to do was attack from underneath. But they never thought of that. I guess that's why they lost.... ;-)
