  • Ummmm, how do the words to this go Jerry ?!! lmao !!!

  • I think this was the 3rd song of the 1st set, the 1st night-- missed 1/2 0f this-- police outside chasing us with horses : ) All 3 nights magical, 66 different songs other than drums/space

  • This is why Hampton rocks!!

  • nice. jerry always number one but bob(marley) also a great man.

  • the dunderheads here debating the finer points of flies on shit are totally missing the rapturous response of the crowd.. that's what it's all about man and what I miss so much.. Thank you, Jerry. There is nowhere to feel that energy anymore. Furthur is awesome but still falls short of the religious experience a Dead show could be.

  • Came out of another first! And if memory serves....came out of Miles Davis' "So What"

  • And that's why I love the Dead

  • That's all. Stir it up, little daring stir it up! and that's it OMG.

  • yes. i too was there and this was an incredible, magical show. this was just an indication of what was going on and what was about to happen. Exactly...like the building was levitated. just pure GD heaven.

  • gives me chills! :-P

  • without a net, jumpin' off a cliff...a band beyond description indeed!

  • here's something that's been gone over 15 years, and all we do is fuss & fight over opinion's and trivial nuances of music. "Third night, fourth song, seventh note! It's fun for me to look at all this stuff and revel in the magic that we CAN. I constantly try to go down alleys and follow links into magical uneathed gems. Bask in the beauty and wonder of it. It's like Gan's said: They'll be a guy on each side of him, and when bobby cut's off Jerry, one of em will boo & the oth'r will cheer wildly

  • Not all of us were suburban frat dudes. I digg the ghetto Marley a lot more than the Estate Marley where everyone was just hungry for money all the time. Thats not what it was about at all!

  • I think Jerry was messing with Bobby! Just watch him looking at Bobby giving him the first verse and then grinning at Phil and Brent! Whatever it was it was one of those magical moments the Dead gave us! Peace...Gerns

  • A night of magic !

  • Brilliant! What a blast! It ain't about the song per se but the audacity of dope!

  • Jerry makes me smile. Bob too. What a treat it would have been to hear them pull this out of the cosmic space. I would have been very grateful...

  • bob still can't sing. lol

  • Garcia knew it and played it beautifully with the Jerry Band in the late '70s. I think it's on the Theatre 1838 Disc. Donna and Keith were with him in that particular Jerry Band concoction and she sang lead. I think Bill was the drummer, but I could be wrong. Great song, whoever is playing it! Peace.

  • ouch.

  • light the splif's my friends

  • crowd is going nuts in this video

  • Jerry played this in the 70s so he had been familiar with it at least...

  • wow

  • The spontaneity of this performance highlighted just how amazing this show was! My3Snappy hit the nail on the head with his description. They just gave it a shot out of fun b/c they were so on that night and feeling the chemistry. All three shows in this run are among the best they ever played in the 80s, 90s, or ever!

  • And the Dead stopped playing Passenger in like 82.Nice try though.

  • This is march 88, not warlocks, that was fall 89.

  • Most of you are missing the point ~ the Dead DIDN'T know how to play this song. It was totally spontaneous, they just went with it as if they were in the basement. Quite a thing for a band of their stature to do. It was pure magic, I tell ya. Find the tapes of the rest of the songs they (really) played, and you'll see what an ON night this was. The spontaneous fun here simply reflects that.

    HAMPTON!!!!!!!!!!!

  • well said, enough said, by me

  • jerry did, he played it with garcia band

  • Ah...Warlocks! Remember the duelling godzillas front of stage during Passenger?

  • @my3snappySo true man.. If I recall correctly they played So what the second night!!!

  • @my3snappy You've got it completely right. It started as a little Jerry didy and the band improvised around that. Getting in was a pain that night, and I finally got on the floor as this started. It was a magic night, just listen to the second set...

It was a magic night, just listen to the second set... We thought the foundation of the arena had split.

  • Hampton 3/26/88 I was at this show. They seemed to have gone into it accidently. They were just having fun, This was actually an excellent run. The next night was life changing.

  • @danielinvt - hey there - this was my 1st Dead show - totally shocked by this one like everyone else - crazy

  • first of all, they didn't know most of the words and the harmony was soooo bad. that might be one of the worst performances by the Dead I've heard

  • I think it's more like "Bob, there's more to the lyrics than 'stir it up', wtf?"

  • this is awesome!!!!!! its the dead playing bob!!!! and listen to the crowd go crazy as the first line is sung. fantastic. its not perfect, but it doesnt have to be. thanks 4 posting this!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i guess it's the kind of thing that doesn't translate well to video.

i'm sure if you'd been at the concert you may have enjoyed it a lot more.

  • I mean you can, but I don't think anyone really cares.

  • Relax man, if you don't enjoy the video then don't watch.

  • No left turn unstoned

  • Right on man, thanks for understanding, some people think that anything the dead did was just the best and how can anyone say otherwise.

  • this one's a riot...just having fun...you can see JG's almost laughing at their first vocal attempts being so out...what song were they finishing that moved into this off the cuff Stir It Up..I wonder?? crowd is way up...

  • 3/26/88

  • As bad as this is it must have been so much fun to be there.

  • what yr?

  • Never knew the Dead to do this song. I have a tape of the Jerry Band in the mid 70s at Hofstra University or someplace, doing it, some sweet singing by Donna & tasty licks by Jerry.

  • ...I remember watching this abortion...those Hampton runs were always fun....no wonder they left out the words when they did it early 90's...

  • LOL... they are just having a blast at this show. very funny :))

  • damn i love the dead but this really was bad...leave bob to bob...

  • hahahahahahahahaha, music is about enjoyment assmunch... not an exact replication. grow a little

  • I was at this show and remember it being incredible. Didn't the second set start with "So What"? Phenomenal!

  • :04 Bobby: hey Jerry - do you happen to know the words?

  • His reply should of been .....kind of : )

  • i saw bob marley sing this on st thomas w/a spliff in hand

  • yerryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy you are the one

  • yerryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy for ever

  • Brings back wonderful memories. Best tour ever, for me personally. Dave, George, Mary K, and me. Mary and I walked in at the tail end of this and knew it would be an amazing show- was there ever a bad one at Hampton? Good memories... "Whose toast?" asked the waitress. "He's toast" I replied. I really really miss those times, and where is Mary K? Sweet as Tupelo Honey.

  • Classic- its these moments that make remind me why i don't just love their music, but love these guys as people.

  • Hampton, VA - 3/26/88... Absolutely amazing that this was captured on video. To add to 78sratblk's comment - yeah! and do it well at that!! F the nay-sayers. Thanks lostsailor -- great find!!

  • This is Philly Spring of 86 as I remember?

  • See, Ratdog could do this = fun surprise!

  • This was A CLASSIC Grateful Dead moment!!! What other band walks on in front of thousands of people, and try doing a song they don't know?

  • I was at this show- no one saw this coming- another one of a kind GD moment!!!

  • JGB did this in 77 at Theatre 1839, great show.

  • im surprised garcia didnt take the vocals on this seeing that he performed it so well with the jgb c.76

  • Honestly, he may not have remembered ever playing it by this point much less know the words. Definitely cool to see though.

  • I thought Donna sang the lead on the '76 version?

  • thats a JGB Show, not sure if it was Donna though, but a chick none the less

  • It was Donna. '76.

  • And 77'. 7/29/77 is an especially good one.

  • was

  • I know I would have gone totally insane if I heard this...but yea, good call Filmcode. Definitely somewhere between amazing & fucking awful! :) ~prasadablue~

  • They sound somewhere between amazing and fucking awful!! The crowd is going nuts. No wonder this was a one time play!! I love this footage!
