I think this was the 3rd song of the 1st set, the 1st night-- missed 1/2 0f this-- police outside chasing us with horses : ) All 3 nights magical, 66 different songs other than drums/space
the dunderheads here debating the finer points of flies on shit are totally missing the rapturous response of the crowd.. that's what it's all about man and what I miss so much.. Thank you, Jerry. There is nowhere to feel that energy anymore. Furthur is awesome but still falls short of the religious experience a Dead show could be.
yes. i too was there and this was an incredible, magical show. this was just an indication of what was going on and what was about to happen. Exactly...like the building was levitated. just pure GD heaven.
here's something that's been gone over 15 years, and all we do is fuss & fight over opinion's and trivial nuances of music. "Third night, fourth song, seventh note! It's fun for me to look at all this stuff and revel in the magic that we CAN. I constantly try to go down alleys and follow links into magical uneathed gems. Bask in the beauty and wonder of it. It's like Gan's said: They'll be a guy on each side of him, and when bobby cut's off Jerry, one of em will boo & the oth'r will cheer wildly
Not all of us were suburban frat dudes. I digg the ghetto Marley a lot more than the Estate Marley where everyone was just hungry for money all the time. Thats not what it was about at all!
I think Jerry was messing with Bobby! Just watch him looking at Bobby giving him the first verse and then grinning at Phil and Brent! Whatever it was it was one of those magical moments the Dead gave us! Peace...Gerns
Garcia knew it and played it beautifully with the Jerry Band in the late '70s. I think it's on the Theatre 1838 Disc. Donna and Keith were with him in that particular Jerry Band concoction and she sang lead. I think Bill was the drummer, but I could be wrong. Great song, whoever is playing it! Peace.
The spontaneity of this performance highlighted just how amazing this show was! My3Snappy hit the nail on the head with his description. They just gave it a shot out of fun b/c they were so on that night and feeling the chemistry. All three shows in this run are among the best they ever played in the 80s, 90s, or ever!
Most of you are missing the point ~ the Dead DIDN'T know how to play this song. It was totally spontaneous, they just went with it as if they were in the basement. Quite a thing for a band of their stature to do. It was pure magic, I tell ya. Find the tapes of the rest of the songs they (really) played, and you'll see what an ON night this was. The spontaneous fun here simply reflects that.
@my3snappy You've got it completely right. It started as a little Jerry didy and the band improvised around that. Getting in was a pain that night, and I finally got on the floor as this started. It was a magic night, just listen to the second set...

Hampton 3/26/88 I was at this show. They seemed to have gone into it accidently. They were just having fun, This was actually an excellent run. The next night was life changing.
this is awesome!!!!!! its the dead playing bob!!!! and listen to the crowd go crazy as the first line is sung. fantastic. its not perfect, but it doesnt have to be. thanks 4 posting this!!!!!!!!!!!
this one's a riot...just having fun...you can see JG's almost laughing at their first vocal attempts being so out...what song were they finishing that moved into this off the cuff Stir It Up..I wonder?? crowd is way up...
Never knew the Dead to do this song. I have a tape of the Jerry Band in the mid 70s at Hofstra University or someplace, doing it, some sweet singing by Donna & tasty licks by Jerry.
Brings back wonderful memories. Best tour ever, for me personally. Dave, George, Mary K, and me. Mary and I walked in at the tail end of this and knew it would be an amazing show- was there ever a bad one at Hampton? Good memories... "Whose toast?" asked the waitress. "He's toast" I replied. I really really miss those times, and where is Mary K? Sweet as Tupelo Honey.
Hampton, VA - 3/26/88... Absolutely amazing that this was captured on video. To add to 78sratblk's comment - yeah! and do it well at that!! F the nay-sayers. Thanks lostsailor -- great find!!
I know I would have gone totally insane if I heard this...but yea, good call Filmcode. Definitely somewhere between amazing & fucking awful! :) ~prasadablue~

first of all, they didn't know most of the words and the harmony was soooo bad. that might be one of the worst performances by the Dead I've heard
