In Britain we have reality shows filled with human beings with lower IQs than fish... in France they have piano battles on television... where did we go wrong?
@eggynapalm don't get it wrong, the show was on "mezzo", absolutely not a national television chanel, we've got lots of night clubs with stupid music.
@pianist7137 I didnt think at Dies Irae, but at Etude Op.39 No. 6, exactly to the 0:35 minutes, reminds me a brief moment of Rach's piece, but just a slight resemblance... Search on youtube: "Valentina Lisitsa plays Rachmaninoff Etude Op. 39 No. 6", you listen it in this video to 1:35 minutes just to make the idea...
And anyway, also many other elements reminds me the Rach's music...
@baronesbc@baronesbc I know clearly that dies irae is in there. the melody comes in once, the rest sounds like variations, in the style of rachmaninov. so we're both right ^^
I far prefer Zygel's playing. Not to dismiss Gonzales, but for me Zygel is that much more structured and tasteful, plus he has a sure command of resources Gonzales can never match.
Also, Zygel's response to Gonzales here is another piece of magic (quite like the white-key handicap later): it shows he can maintain musical interest over long spans of time even without showy displays or high speed playing.
@coqdorysme The difference between them is not the level of talent, but the style of playing. I prefer Gonazales because i think he has more feeling and he puts a different part of himself into the music. Whereas Zygel seemed a bit textbook if u get what i mean. Notice Gonzale's dramatic pauses. Also how everyone thought he was done and started clapping, then he whips out eye of the tiger. Indeed, there is definitely a difference in genius between these two.
The reason why Gonzales is amazing is because he gives the audience a context to understand what he is playing (Eye of the Tiger). He puts all of the surrounding arrangements around the melody and showing that he can be complex, dark and whimsical all within the same song. I'm no pianist, but I'm willing to bet that Zygel would win if graded on classical music by classical pianists. Gonzales is a bit of talent mixed with showmanship.
@epistemicfail Very good points. I am a pianist (though not an expert by any means) and I'd say it's quite difficult to compare the two. If graded by classical pianists (I'm trained classically) it would still probably be a close call. Totentanz is definitely a much more difficult piece to translate and vary, but Gonzales still had some fantastic ideas in his presentation. I would still personally choose Gonzales.
3:49 is amazing. Love it.

C'est marrant, mais la musique de Gonzales signifie pour moi beaucoup plus de choses que le contemporain perché de Zygel... Suis-je seul ?

Zygel is a bit grating on the ears. Gonzales can go just as quick, but it still sounds melodic.

Zygel's face makes this just that little bit extra... For sheer audacity, and for doing it with gloves on, Gonzales = amazing.

@eggynapalm dont worry dude, in France we have also reality shows. Mezzo(the tv channel)is not very well known, and u need the cable to watch it.

par contre gonzales joue avec les sentiments (eye of the tiger etc...), un peu trop facile quand même!
Though Gonzales plays with our feelings (eye of the tiger...), maybe too easy :)
