Before any new starlet ( do we have " starLETS " anymore ? Wait- you probably didnt even know Joan's other daughters existed, since they were not even mentioned in the film. Even Christina, the daughter who wrote the book admitted the movie was over the top trash.

@XMOO7 As beautiful and charming as she was for the press, she was mean and self-absorbed. Some Hollywood stars are very humble and down to earth, very friendly and human. This woman was not.
What a BEAUTIFUL lady! Gosh, really, she was so attractive! I'd never guess she was 60 here and sometimes I think she looked better when she was older than when she was a young girl.
@RandomX856 Yeah, it is from Mommie Dearest, right? If this is similar to reality a little bit - I guess she could have OCD and if so, it is a serious problem and it wants understandning...
I've never thought she was as attractive as others did, but seeing this I have to change my mind. She looks incredible here! So relaxed and-- as someone said--radiant.
@KGA1022 I don't think she was really 'beautiful' in the normal sense of the word but she had such a fantastic, powerful, screen presence, she had a great voice, she was such a fantastic speaker and most of all, she had sex appeal. All that is much more attractive than someone is is pretty but completely dull.
Joan is what Hollywood dreams is made of ,, I LOVE JOAN CRAWFORD!!..AND BETTE DAVIS,,NOOOOO other todays actresses comes close but maybe Meryl Streep shes much like the older movie stars she can act!!
she seems agreeable enough to me. the fact is only the people who knew her personally can tell you what sort of a person she was. her daughter had an axe to grind so i think one can discount her comments to a large extent.i have seen a few of her films and she was a competent actress but not in the league of davis who was of course unsurpassable .
Joan was a great star and will be remembered forever on the silver screen as long as Hollywood lives. But most your childish comments will fade away with time like most of your empty lives do.
i don't think she beat her kids you know that whole thing was based on one of her daughters book and i watched her bio and it turned out her daughter was just angry at Joan because she could not make her a fomous actress but it is not the first time that happened Bette Davis's daughter did the same thing.
I don't think she was an entire monster. Although she treated some people bad there is a different Joan Crawford. A Joan that loved to give, and she's right. Those actors and actresses do owe it to their industry to get all glamorous and present themselves. They're lucky they made it!
Beautiful woman and soul. Even if she was not in a so excellent mood at the time or not so great moments in the past, she never let it show through a interview, performance or in public . Gracious and a star to the full magnitude. And she loved every minute of it. She was and should be the template for every movie star out there. Stars now should observe and take notes, God Bless you Joan. Muah!!
Joan was Joan Crawford..like Tiger Woods is Tiger Woods..As they say we come with.."warts and ALL"... But most major film stars if not all are gone and now we're stuck with "Hollywood Street Trash" Today our Movies stars on the most part aren't..Maybe soap Opera stars at the very best. thanks
Brilliant, and essentially self-taught and refused to stop learning, until she got it right. She got on a path for herself and when she reached her goals, she appreciated every single moment of it.
bette davis & joan are my favorites, i don't get into the personal life, it's none of my concern.
If there was any truth to her & Christina, possibly a mental illness? again, the lady is gone, & missed terribly, but the slander should one day stop, she was a legend, & gave us so much, in such a short time.
Who cares about her *possible* personal life, what did or did not take place there is between her and god (if you believe in that.)
She had faults like all other people do. Regardless, I would take 1 Joan Crawford over 20 Britney Spears and half of today's Hollywood...ANY. DAY. She always looked her best (still pretty at 61), was polite to fans, articulate, intelligent, and always willing to learn new things. Many people today, celebrity or not, could take to learning a thing or two from that.
She had great wit and humor also! she was truly a well equipped woman for film and real life. Hey trade mark eye brows actually set her a part from all the others.
Joan Crawford will always touch us for generations to come.
Yeah, because you would have approved if Christina had done it while Joan was alive. Of course, if someone is a great actress, she automatically would never abuse her children. People always act the exact same way in public as they do in private...
@dearyogini My father was a well known dectective that worked across the United States and for several Presidents and has been in Law Enforcement for over 40 yrs and was well liked by the public and everyone and he had a very "public" face and no one ever knew that he would beat the FUCK out of myself , my sister, my mother and our dog almost every night of our lives and we were stuck with him untill I was old enough to move out of the house!
But MGM was run by very critical Jewish businessmen that all had rough childhoods, like Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. They were not like Gods. They were flawed as well. Yes, they were racist and sexist as well. You think the studio heads of MGM treated only treated blacks like second class citizens? No, they also treated the women actors(Lana Turner, Judy Garland, etc.) far worse than that. The studio looked upon women actors like 3rd Grade dog meat and were looked upon as such. Sad, but true.
Both Crawford and Davis had one amazing attribute: even if they appeared in a lousy film, you couldn't take your eyes off either one of them. Davis' work is legendary, as is Crawford's, though it would seem that Davis was lucky enough to have a bigger body of great work. Still, Crawford was brilliant in "Grand Hotel". "A Woman's Face". "The Women", "Mildred Peerce", Sudden Fear", "Possessed", "Humoresque", "Baby Jane". Those were the GREAT Crawford performances.
So were "The Shining Hour" "Strange Cargo" "Flamingo Road" "and "Autumn Leaves" were all really good as well. I also thought her performance in "Rain" was better than anyone realized it was at the time, I loved her portrayal. She was very versatile, love Joan.
I doubt Metro would care about how she "treated" Christina. They were Monsters in their own right. Look at Judy Garland & what they did to her for 15 yrs. the profits from Judy's films dwarfed Joan Crawford's films at MGM. In the 1940's Judy Garland and Bette Davis were the only female leads who could carry a film on there own. Joan was getting older and she didnt have the appeal she once did so the public waned and they let her go.
Her film work was wonderful; the mystery is why she became box office poison at a time when she should have been at the pinnacle of her career. Did the studio chiefs find her too difficult, were they aware of the family problems (alleged by Christina)? Or was it just one of those weird circumstances where time flew by and Joan was forgotten. It would be interesting to know the truth about this issue. Even in the cheezy hacker flicks she still held your interest.
Joan Crawford is a representation of what to be in life to me. She dosen't take no for an answer, but works hard, grew stronger with her career, had integrity and passion for what she did and look great doing it. I LOVE you Joan Crawford!
I'm with MsPerfectsquare. Joan Crawford remains one of the purest examples of a bona fide actress, this speaking for not just her on-screen persona, but her home-life and public face. If you think her 1978 biography simply titled "Joan Crawford, a Biography" was something bold, you should actually read her daughter Christina's "Mommie Dearest." NOT to take it a completely face value, mind you, but Joan's motherhood to her FIRST TWO adoptees-Christina a Christopher-was a real horror story to read
I read her autobiography written in the 60s. very fascinating. There were so many layers of denial and psychological coping mechanisms. She seemed to focus more on etiquette and being a hostess than on her inner feelings. I've been fascinated with her since I was a child.
I'm merely a member of the board of directors of Pepsi cola... you go Joan!! Shame on the people calling her a bitch, the truth of the matter is she was WAYYY ahead of her time, a strong & independant woman who would never let any man put her in her place, she always put them in THEIR place. Long love Queen Joan Crawford!!!!
No eyebrows with the "surprised" look, no bloated collagen lips, no nip/tuck emaciated body..and at 61 she looked better than most current stars in thier 30's and 40's.
I noticed in most of her interviews in the 1960's Joan seems so guilty during interviews. She seems to get uncomfortable quickly when asked questions.
She probably was a huge bitch, probably not the best mom, but nobody really knows what went on with her kids. I think even the daughter, who wrote the book, said the movie was way off.
joan crawford is obviously the person that the daughter Christina said, that's very apparent; Yet,people r still as ignorant as ever about what happened now as back when it happened.
She's so sweet! And lol "Crown, dear, crown." Joan Crawford is always classy and amusing in all of her interviews! She never fails to make me laugh :)
POINT IS... none of us was there so noone can say that joan was this type of woman.. and its sad b/c we cant really hear joans side of the story. why should we believe one persons point of view?
i absolutely HATE getting older! but, i'm so glad that i lived, in a time when there were such people as joan, bette, and marlene and the rest! the majority of 'stars' are very boring now.
@foxolita , you are absolutely right. Not only boring, but stupid. The nowadays "stars" have no personality, no character, most of them no talent, no manners, no style. They are boring, overpaid and spoiled. I am a young man and I think that they are lousy. You won't find in the new Hollywood any Joan Crawford, Irene Dunne, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis, Rita Hayworth, Ingrid Bergman, Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, Carole Lombard, etc., etc.
All these great wonderful women seemed to have undeserving daughters. In Joan's case she shouldn't have adopted Christina, but her 'twins' said she was a wonderful Mother. Bette Davis's daughter was a cow, and Marlene Dietrich's daughter wrote an insightful book, until Marlene retires, then the it gets bitchy. Marlene adored her, took her all over the world, but Maria is conservative, & Marlene lived life to the full. Did these daughters really want a dull ordinary life in the suburbs?
Why don't you just SHUT UP and get over it. You weren't there, and neither were "the twins". They didn't turn out very well did they? CHRISTINA turned out the best!
lol I was bothering my mom about some dust on the shelves saying "Do you think this is clean!?" and stuff like that and she was in the laundry room and I wouldn't stop pestering her about the dust, and she came out with a wire hanger and told me that if I didn't shut up she'd smack me with it. (She was joking, of course. My mother has never hit me not even with her hand) but it was still funny. I love Joan Crawford :)
... I don't think I've ever seen such a candid interview of Joan. It's like a side of her I've never seen :-) I love it - thanks for posting. How wonderful to see her so "unscripted." I love you dearest Joan!
Do a Google search for the 1960 article from Redbook Magazine titled "The Revolt of Joan Crawford's Daughter" This was written many years before Joan's death, and illustrates what a horrible mother, and bully, she was. If the information in this article were untrue, she could have sued the magazine for libel, but she didn't. You know the old saying, where there's smoke, there's fire. And this article reveals a lot of smoke, so . . .
There are more recent books that dispute 'Mommie Dearest'. and it is now believed to be mostly an exaggeration from a bitter and twisted jealous bitch of a daughter. Even Joan's other children didn't agree with the picture painted by Cheryl in her book. This is wonderful stuff, Joan was a wonderful woman. Read the book 'Not the girl Next Door' its a more realistic portrait. And hey, visit my totally Joan channel. Robbie.
There is 1960 article from Redbook Magazine titled "The Revolt of Joan Crawford's Daughter" that can be found on the Internet. Both Joan and Cristina were interviewed for this piece, along with several others who knew their relationship. Whether or not all the stuff in Mommie Dearest is true, this article is very enlightening in that it reveals, at a minimum, that Joan Crawford was very emotionally abusive and cruel towards her daughter. She had no business being a parent.
Look, I agree with you, Joan may not have been the best parent, but we all had things that happened to us that if taken out of context would make any parent look bad. I just happen to believe that Christina was a bad seed and really pushed Joan's buttons. They were not right for each other. But there's no smoke without fire, and Christina has certainly fanned the flames and lived off degrading her mother's memory ever since. I mean get over it. No one wants to hear it anymore.
Maybe you and other blindly obsessed fans don't want to hear it anymore, but that's your problem. Saying that "Joan may not have been the best parent" is a HUGE understatement: She was a rotten parent. She wasn't a good parent to any of her kids, but with Christina and Christopher, she was downright rotten and cruel. If social services had known what was going on, they should have removed these kids from her care.
You talk as if you witnessed it all. You say she wasn't a good parent to any of her kids? Wrong. Her twins are quoted sayin "she was the best mother anyone could ever have". You weren't there so you don't know what she did with Christina or Christopher.
It's sad what Christina has done. I personally don't believe her, but even if her story was true it's not right to do that to someone. The 1st thing ppl think of when the hear Joan Crawford is "Mommie Dearest" and that's really sad. Joan had a rough childhood and worked so hard to make something of herself. It's also sad how ppl go on about Joan's alcoholism. So many ppl sadly are alcoholics, but for some reason everyone beats Joan down for it. I hope Joan is happy in that big movie in the sky.
Yes I agree, I think Christina's account of her mother would have been an exaggeration. Many growing up in the fifties and then sixties would look back at earlier times and "hate" their parents for how they behaved compared to parenting styles in later years.
"but even if her story was true it's not right to do that to someone."
No...if she was really treated and abused like that she has the right to tell her story. Im not sure what's true or not- I love Mommie Dearest and Joan Crawford She was a great actress- that doesn't mean she wasn't a fucked up person behind closed doors.
i remember a saying I once read about MGM's Big Three: "Shearer got the big productions, Garbo provided the 'art', and Joan Crawford made the money to pay for both"...
She knew who put groceries on her table and she was absolutely gracious to her fans. Her eldest daughter was an obnoxious n'er-do-well, and she wrote that crap tell-all book to get rich. Joan Crawford remains the epitome of grace and style in the Golden era of Hollywood.
About her alcohol addiction it was pretty sad and it is also unfortunate when people make so many jokes on her addiction. She was a human being and all of us have something tough to deal with. It would be better to her if she had found another way to deal with her issues, but we are not always so rational. She had money, beauty, fame, .. but as we can see something was still missing. It is pretty painful to see a superb actress like her to have so much trouble to find the real happiness. So sad!
Charming!!! She could be awfully affected (not to mention effected), but here she is truly appealing and stone cold sober. What happened after the interview and after she fnished that drink...well.
She was the best! RIP Joan

@XMOO7 As beautiful and charming as she was for the press, she was mean and self-absorbed. Some Hollywood stars are very humble and down to earth, very friendly and human. This woman was not.

@KGA1022 I don't think she was really 'beautiful' in the normal sense of the word but she had such a fantastic, powerful, screen presence, she had a great voice, she was such a fantastic speaker and most of all, she had sex appeal. All that is much more attractive than someone is is pretty but completely dull.

she seems agreeable enough to me. the fact is only the people who knew her personally can tell you what sort of a person she was. her daughter had an axe to grind so i think one can discount her comments to a large extent.i have seen a few of her films and she was a competent actress but not in the league of davis who was of course unsurpassable .

richierichnumber1 2 years ago 2
i don't think she beat her kids you know that whole thing was based on one of her daughters book and i watched her bio and it turned out her daughter was just angry at Joan because she could not make her a fomous actress but it is not the first time that happened Bette Davis's daughter did the same thing.
erinbc1 2 years ago 3

But most major film stars if not all are gone and now we're stuck with "Hollywood Street Trash" Today our Movies stars on the most part aren't..Maybe soap Opera stars at the very best. thanks

Zva26 2 years ago
So were "The Shining Hour" "Strange Cargo" "Flamingo Road" "and "Autumn Leaves" were all really good as well. I also thought her performance in "Rain" was better than anyone realized it was at the time, I loved her portrayal. She was very versatile, love Joan.

MRVEGASDUDE 2 years ago 2
I doubt Metro would care about how she "treated" Christina. They were Monsters in their own right. Look at Judy Garland & what they did to her for 15 yrs. the profits from Judy's films dwarfed Joan Crawford's films at MGM. In the 1940's Judy Garland and Bette Davis were the only female leads who could carry a film on there own. Joan was getting older and she didnt have the appeal she once did so the public waned and they let her go.
NFitalianGuy 2 years ago 2

I LOVE you Joan Crawford!
foofwolf22 2 years ago
I'm with MsPerfectsquare. Joan Crawford remains one of the purest examples of a bona fide actress, this speaking for not just her on-screen persona, but her home-life and public face. If you think her 1978 biography simply titled "Joan Crawford, a Biography" was something bold, you should actually read her daughter Christina's "Mommie Dearest." NOT to take it a completely face value, mind you, but Joan's motherhood to her FIRST TWO adoptees-Christina a Christopher-was a real horror story to read
bittersweetsunrise 2 years ago
I read her autobiography written in the 60s. very fascinating. There were so many layers of denial and psychological coping mechanisms. She seemed to focus more on etiquette and being a hostess than on her inner feelings. I've been fascinated with her since I was a child.

"lovely" Miss Joan Crawford.
Except for the puff of cigarette smoke.
Being lovely is partly a gift of nature and partly dressing well and artful use of make-up.
When one accepts an interview, on e should not content oneselof with the politically correct
- Holywood is wonderful
- everyone is wonderful
- give oneself for the movie industry etc.
Thank goodness for her sense of humour and some revalations towards the end.

@foxolita I agree and I got to ask you... what made them most entertaining in your opinion?
AngelicLove21 1 year ago
All these great wonderful women seemed to have undeserving daughters. In Joan's case she shouldn't have adopted Christina, but her 'twins' said she was a wonderful Mother. Bette Davis's daughter was a cow, and Marlene Dietrich's daughter wrote an insightful book, until Marlene retires, then the it gets bitchy. Marlene adored her, took her all over the world, but Maria is conservative, & Marlene lived life to the full. Did these daughters really want a dull ordinary life in the suburbs?

Do a Google search for the 1960 article from Redbook Magazine titled "The Revolt of Joan Crawford's Daughter" This was written many years before Joan's death, and illustrates what a horrible mother, and bully, she was. If the information in this article were untrue, she could have sued the magazine for libel, but she didn't. You know the old saying, where there's smoke, there's fire. And this article reveals a lot of smoke, so . . .

mnmcv1 2 years ago 2
There are more recent books that dispute 'Mommie Dearest'. and it is now believed to be mostly an exaggeration from a bitter and twisted jealous bitch of a daughter. Even Joan's other children didn't agree with the picture painted by Cheryl in her book. This is wonderful stuff, Joan was a wonderful woman. Read the book 'Not the girl Next Door' its a more realistic portrait. And hey, visit my totally Joan channel. Robbie.
EvaPhillips 2 years ago
Sorry, I meant to say 'Christina', Cheryl was Lana Turner's daughter. Silly me, too many vodkas, LOL.
EvaPhillips 2 years ago
There is 1960 article from Redbook Magazine titled "The Revolt of Joan Crawford's Daughter" that can be found on the Internet. Both Joan and Cristina were interviewed for this piece, along with several others who knew their relationship. Whether or not all the stuff in Mommie Dearest is true, this article is very enlightening in that it reveals, at a minimum, that Joan Crawford was very emotionally abusive and cruel towards her daughter. She had no business being a parent.
rachelazw 2 years ago 5
Look, I agree with you, Joan may not have been the best parent, but we all had things that happened to us that if taken out of context would make any parent look bad. I just happen to believe that Christina was a bad seed and really pushed Joan's buttons. They were not right for each other. But there's no smoke without fire, and Christina has certainly fanned the flames and lived off degrading her mother's memory ever since. I mean get over it. No one wants to hear it anymore.
EvaPhillips 2 years ago
Maybe you and other blindly obsessed fans don't want to hear it anymore, but that's your problem. Saying that "Joan may not have been the best parent" is a HUGE understatement: She was a rotten parent. She wasn't a good parent to any of her kids, but with Christina and Christopher, she was downright rotten and cruel. If social services had known what was going on, they should have removed these kids from her care.
rachelazw 2 years ago
You talk as if you witnessed it all. You say she wasn't a good parent to any of her kids? Wrong. Her twins are quoted sayin "she was the best mother anyone could ever have". You weren't there so you don't know what she did with Christina or Christopher.
LexiixoxRoxx 2 years ago
It's sad what Christina has done. I personally don't believe her, but even if her story was true it's not right to do that to someone. The 1st thing ppl think of when the hear Joan Crawford is "Mommie Dearest" and that's really sad. Joan had a rough childhood and worked so hard to make something of herself. It's also sad how ppl go on about Joan's alcoholism. So many ppl sadly are alcoholics, but for some reason everyone beats Joan down for it. I hope Joan is happy in that big movie in the sky.
BitterSweetxo13 2 years ago 2
Yes I agree, I think Christina's account of her mother would have been an exaggeration. Many growing up in the fifties and then sixties would look back at earlier times and "hate" their parents for how they behaved compared to parenting styles in later years.
peggy1au 2 years ago
"but even if her story was true it's not right to do that to someone."

She knew who put groceries on her table and she was absolutely gracious to her fans. Her eldest daughter was an obnoxious n'er-do-well, and she wrote that crap tell-all book to get rich. Joan Crawford remains the epitome of grace and style in the Golden era of Hollywood.
MacCollic 2 years ago 3
About her alcohol addiction it was pretty sad and it is also unfortunate when people make so many jokes on her addiction. She was a human being and all of us have something tough to deal with. It would be better to her if she had found another way to deal with her issues, but we are not always so rational. She had money, beauty, fame, .. but as we can see something was still missing. It is pretty painful to see a superb actress like her to have so much trouble to find the real happiness. So sad!
