It's sad to know the cause was due to an open window in the control room, What a tragic mistake, At least now they have training for off shore platforms.
Today, Feb-15-2009, twenty seven years after the tragedy there was a moment of silence on the rig, a prayer and a wreath laid in memory of the individuals who perished that night.
This ceremony takes place every year on Feb.-15 on every offshore installation off the coast of eastern Canada in memory of our fellow rig workers. God Bless all of them and their families.
From the crew of the Henry Goodrich drilling off the coast of Newfoundland Canada.
I was about 7 years old then and remember this event like it happened yesterday. The whole thing was so vivid and explicit. I also remember how the inquest revealed the total disrespect for human life and safety showed by all responsible parties. A very sad time in our (NL) history
That was so tragic,i mean there were 50 people on that rig from N.L and they all died;my class watched this video in english class today.Today is Dec 15 2008 N.L Canada.
Oh,I was the control room operator on this when it was in Lower Cook Inlet.I will say that the nice folks at ODECO,the owners, did just an awful job at training. That shortsightedness pretty much caused this whole thing.
Since that disaster they have set up better training and better stability schools, however I was a ballast controller on a Zapata rig in the early 90's and half of our lights on the control panel didn't work, our seachest light on the panel didn't work, so some one could think they were pumping out of a ballast tank with an open seachest. Our equipment was maintained like a shade tree mechanic run automotive shop. Hope things are better now.
The Canadian Coast Guard report reads like an adventure story. Inexperienced captain, unsafe ballasting operations, low stability margins. This led to the much safer design by Seaways Engineering of a shipyard friendly multi-purpose semi, MPSS, now building in China. Contact 001 760 721 7035

It sank near the Titanic. I heard it on Disasters Of The Century. They sank in the same waters.
