@28GallonBowfront : Too many fish jumped out. This is the #1 problem with fish mortality and this kind of tank. Clownfish were from previous 140 gallon reef, added together, in 2004.
@scouncil2028 that stinks. i had a lid on my tank and there was a 3 inch liitle hole open for filters and etc in the back and my midas blenny managed to launch himself through there. Thankfully i was there and was able to get him back in the tank
Though this tank is very impressive, it costs a fortune to buy the tank and stand alone. I went to a LFS and they had a 30g setup with tank and stand for 1.5k.
You can go onto Craigslist and buy a 120g tank, 100+lbs pounds of rock, a 1/3HP chiller, and a $900 lighting system all for $800.
Once again, impressive setup and I hope you succeed in keeping this tank.
sirberner12 : At 0:43 is a Lysmata amboinensis - a white striped cleaner shrimp. I recommend them for most reef tanks without hesitation. They will not only clean willing fish but willing humans as well ... stick a clean finger in the tank and hold it still for a few minutes and see what I mean.
Chill out bananatree94, this is the most relaxing hobby out there ( except for smoking medicinal herbs ) and no need for getting your knickers tied up in a bunch ( British saying.)
dude y are u guys saying im flipping out? lmao..... i answered his question and he called me a name that he didnt even it spell right.... geeze. dont i have the right to defend myself?
@pyropuffer Seriously! Thanks. There are so many YouTube trolls out there on the interwebs that can inject flaming comments about the most innocuous of topics. It's a fish tank, made out of a labor of love. It's not a political statement or anything involving a Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan, Egypt, Obama, the economy or music.
The entire world needs to chill.
Good luck with your hobby - your videos are outstanding.
Howdy : Good question. Since the water flows out and over the tank walls, any dust or contaminants that fall into the water are very quickly filtered out through the large foam pre-filter, then thoroughly through the fine sock filter that catches the water draining into the sump.
So you've gotten out of the hobby? In retrospect, did you like or dislike this tank? I'm not at the point of buying one (unless you're selling yours at discount) but I'm hoping to find out what you thought of the zero edge experience. Thanks--it sure looked great!
Howdy : Yes, I am out of the hobby for now; although hobby is not the correct term : I believe 'second job' is more like it. Zero Edges are great tanks. In the 'more info' section I've listed some bullets points about the '+' and '-' aspects of this tank.
Thanks NITRO4KTHOMPSON : Appreciate the kind words. This tank has since been broken down and the occupants moved to a 200 gallon reef operated by a full time retired reefer fanatic.
Reef Jerky is a huge problem with ZE tanks. Make sure you don't have fish that a.) love to jump ( fire-fish are the worst IMO ) or b.) fish that are mean and love to chase all other fish to the point of jumping ( like the Tomato Clowns in this video.)
It can be a problem with jumping fish, but I have rigged a few different devices to prevent reef jerkey ( made from window screening, not shown in video.)
theres just too much power there for me to run any thing like tht .. i choose more natural methods so im not using as much power .. but hey this tank looks great .. but whats ur electric bill like ? !! lol
The total power used during the day is about 250W lights + 60watts main pump + 40 watts skimmer + 17 watts fuge light = 370 watts ( about 3.9 cents per hour given about 12 cents per KWH. At nighttime the total is 100 watts. It's about 60 cents a day in juice. In the summer, no chiller or fan is needed, as the tank maintains ambient room temp, due to its design. But in the winter, the room temp is around 62-66, and the 350 watt heater runs constantly!
like a humidifier is a machine tht adds moisture into the air .. preventing dust falling onto the surface of the water ... i was wondering if u had any thing like it ?
Are those SPS at the top of the rock? If so, how are they doing so far? I am thinking about getting a ZeroEdge, however I'd like to be able to add a few SPS as well. I have heard a few people say they don't support SPS that well. Thanks for the video.
Yes, SPSes everywhere in the tank. They are doing awesome. Corals don't care about the brand name of the tank, and what I think your colleagues are suggesting is that the water flow in a standard Zero Edge may not be enough. I have a much stronger pump than the one sold with the Zero Edge system ( mine is an Iwaki 30XLRT, 1200 gph/0 feet head), and by custom designing my own return nozzle, I get chaotic return flow perfect for most corals.
I certainly meant no slight against the ZeroEdge. I am actually looking into getting one, which is why I was curious about the SPS. I had heard that the flow sometimes wasn't enough for the SPS. However, with an Iwaki, I can understand how the SPS would like it so much. Thanks.
