I was born and grew up in a little Minnesota town called Wrenshall which is about 85 miles from Judy's birthplace of Grand Rapids. I've been in Grand Rapids many, many times and it is a charming and beautiful little town. It's interesting to hear her speak of Duluth and all these places I grew up in and around!
I always love to hear about the connections that Judy makes in peoples lives & hearts. It adds such a personal touch to everything & everyone she touched. Thank you.
Lovely. Judy has so much class and grace. Quite humble and natural...but so eloquent. She clearly adored those brief years of idyllic childhood. And she was always a splendid raconteur.
You say something here that is so true. Not many seem to realize that Judy was very humble, self-deprecating, did not like to talk about herself. She never forgot where she came from.
Thank You so much for posting this recording. There's nothing like hearing Judy's story from her own mouth. It gives her fans a much clearer image of the "true" Judy. Looking forward to everything else that you share. Thanks.
I like clear images ... Judy's has been blurry for far too long ... What she says here & in the future posts of this recording will hopefully give a voice to her ... literally in her own words.
It's wonderful too see new material (that I can never get enough of) making its way to us. I fell in love with Judy on my first viewing of Oz (1962) on a B&W set. I was six years old. I remember crying when it was over - because I would have to wait an entire year to see her again. I didn't get to watch her show because we watched Bonanza only. When she passed away - I mourned for a year. Since that time, I have heard/seen/owned most available material on her - thank you for this!
Judy had a way of weaving her magic into people's hearts. ... Tonite, I will be working on Part 2 of this recording. It will probably take me a few days.Judy has been waiting a long time to be heard, not just as a phenomenal talent, but to be known better as a person.
Terrific video and your pictures are great of Judy and of Mickey also. Many I have never seen before. This is an amazing recording. Thanks so much for sharing it!
Wonderful post! I think it is very important to note here that Judy is recalling her childhood as being "terribly happy". Anybody who subscribes to the old cliche about Ethel being a horrid witch of a mother who ruined her children's lives by forcing them to perform in vaudeville should listen carefully to this interview.
O.K., she may not have been the ideal mother but she probably wasn't all that much different from many other moms who just wanted their children to succeed in life and maybe were a little too tough on them at times. But she succeeded in bringing Judy Garland to the rest of the world and that is one of the greatest gifts to the 20th century and beyond. So thank you Ethel and peace be with you. And thank you MicheleBell for posting this gem, I'm looking forward to part 2! :-)
There are several parts. I need to use some discretion with names & such, so I'm rolling it around in my thoughts. Judy talks about a few things that I doubt have ever been heard or written. At least not known or understood by alot of people. Ethel did give the world a wonderful gift & I won't speculate about her motives. I'm sure there isn't just a one dimensional answer. But I thank her for at least this role she played in sharing with us A Fabulous Lady.
Sure. And I suppose after my little outburst in Ethel's defense now part 2 of the interview will come out and Judy will be talking about how horrific it was growing up in the Gumm household and how her mom used to wrap her around a bedpost if she didn't sing! ;-)
I was wondering today funny enough if Judy had ever returned to Grand Rapids after they had left. Interesting to know. Also does anyone know why the white frame house was removed from its original location?
Judy was quite a storyteller - always sharing some fascinating tale from her life -& at times, it is said, added dramatic impact. It's the nature of a good storyteller. I don't think we'll ever know whether her stories had dramatic elements. It's all a matter of interpretation, which can be fun. For me, the Truth here is that it's coming directly from the source of so much interpretation & fascination. No one else ... JUST JUDY.
i like hearing her talk about her childhood

You defend Ethel with a very good point. Without her, we may not have had Judy.

Thanks a lot for this! Will you upload other parts too? (because the title says part 1 :D)

that is really wild. I wonder how much of what Judy said was true of just myth...she really fascinates me.

I think I like the childhood memories ... the cherries & the first notice taken of her singing ... the best. I smiled. Hope you did, too.
