To play the file you will need the FLV player and to get it in iTunes you will need iSquint which will convert it into a playable format on the iPod and iPhone it will also be a lot smaller file around 2-3GB.
when you rip the movie, it converts it to .vob... you need a converting software to convert it to avi, mp4, itunes, or whatever - I suggest you use VisualHub, best piece of software out there!
I run leopard, and I store the VOB's on an external HD. I open the DVD player Application that came with leopard. Once in the player, go to file and open DVD media. From there select the VOB Folder. Click open and your in...
You don't have to rip the full DVD content. There's an optinon that allows you to choose just the main title to rip. That will lower the file size by a good amount.
the VLC Media Player, i can almost garentee you that itll play you .VOB files.. itll play anything, also Divx Converter might be able to convert the .VOB file into a DIvx file which is a smaller file and will play on a larger variety of media players... also, if your running out of space ive seen a video where a guy removed some of the languages in the mac (chinese german etc.) and he saved over 2GB of space, but yeah.. hope u get it figured out pce
If you are dedicated to storing your movies on your hard-drive, then convert them to .avi format. Nothing else. Use the DivX or XviD codec. Google guides to doing this; I could explain but this response is long enough.
ALSO. .VOB files should work in ANY DVD-playing software. It is a DVD-file. If you can play DVDs, there is NO reason you should not be able to play .VOBs. If you can't figure it out, grab a player like mplayer or VideoLan. It will solve all of your problems.
If you want to play different region DVDs, you don't have to always rip them. There are such things as on-the-fly decrypters. It is a small program you launch, insert your DVD, and it decrypts (ie, removes the copy protection and region protection) the files on the disc. It will allow you to play them in any normal DVD player.
You do not want to rip a collection of movies onto your Mac. If you have the DVD, you can play it from the disc, or even make a disc copy. There is absolutely no benefit from storing the DVD on your hard-drive. A DVD is tiny, slip it into a paper sleeve and take it with you, or buy a disc notebook - if portability is what your thinking.
.VOB is the basic DVD format. DVDs hold 4.5GB or 8GBs of information, and in order to take full advantage of the quality allowed on a DVD, movies usually use up the full 8GB resource. MactheRipper does not change the DVD files, it pulls them exactly from the DVD. While 8GB is "huge", it is not at ALL uncommon in the DVD world.
If you look on newegg, you can find some pretty cheap External Terabyte drives. ($300, 7200RPM) Just do a search, you may find something even cheaper, just keep in mind, the faster the RPM, the faster the hard drive is. Although your idea is good, I like the thought of a mirrored drive.
I am about one week away from purchasing my computer for college at the PC store for students (good deals)I have probably read every review on the Macbook within google. After searching I had 2 concerns, one was already answered and my other is the speaker volume, do they seem quiet or normal, thanks again
Hey I like the reviews. You seem like the most credible person to ask regarding school work with a Mac. I am heading off to college soon and can't decide on whether purchasing a PC laptop (Hp) or Mac Book. I won't run games or anything, just MS Word and web surfing. I also have been concerned about the Mac book because I heard that they shut off randomly and get hot. How has your Mac book been doing with all these concerns?
My Macbook has never shut off when not prompted to (i.e. when I want it to shut down), and has never run at an excessive heat level. I have a free program called iStat Pro which is a widget that displays all information including heat levels and fan speeds and I have yet to have a problem even under load.
I have a problem. I really like mac and want to switch. But I wana buy a macbook. But there is some competators out there. The one that Im conserned about is the Dell XPS 1330. Priced at 1449, has double the ram as the macbook, and comes with a Nvidia Geforce 8400m GS (100$ upgrade). I dont know to choose. Im leaning towards the mac, but I want a better graphics card for the mac, pleasehelp me make my decision
Go with the Mac unless you need the upgraded graphics. The integrated graphics inside the Macbook will do the average to moderate user well, and the Macbook in this case will cost you less.
Get a macbook pro they come wiht 2gigs of ram and 8600m Nvidia Geforce with 128mb of sdram, but it will run you $2000. I would still go with macbook unless you are doing any serious gaming but you can custumize your macbook up to 2gigs of ram.
Dude did you try playing any games on the Macbook Like World of warcraft i just want to know the FPS or is FRS whatever that shows how fast it goes with the game.
I actually have not. I'm not really big into gaming but do not hold anything against those that are. I will probably try WoW sometime as I hear its pretty good and with the 2 gigs of RAM I just put in, it should be ok. It won't be great though because the Macbook has Shared video RAM as opposed to a dedicated card.
you said about the 2gigs you just put in..where did you get the memory. did you buy off the Apple site or another site? i have a macbook with 1Gb (2x512mb) so i'd like to upgrade to 2gb (2x1gb) but on the apple site it's pretty expensive..any thoughts?
I would not recommend getting RAM through Apple. It is VERY expensive and it is really easy to find a good deal on other sites. I got mine from NewEgg for $100 shipped. The RAM thoughts will be in the next vid, hopefully posted tomorrow.
cheers man..i just wanted to clarify that other RAM's would be reliable. i've looked at some Kingston ram, and that worked out much cheaper per Gig than apple. i take it you've had to replace you're 2x512s with 2x1GB? have you had any success selling your 512s?
Hey LeMacMan... i just want to say great reviews and keep making more. i also wanted to know how much space does the ialert software take up when you downlad it and where do u go to download it.
Hey, does the Appple Remote get confused with iAlertU and front row? P.S. when you say tray, just say dick cause some not-so bright people will get confused.
just a note... your mac will not play hd-dvd's or blue-ray, both those formats require a proprietary player or a dual player of which apple has not acquired liscenses for yet. Keep up the good work, I just ordered my macbook today!!! :-p maybe the next generation of macs will have the hardware to play them!
Thanks for the tip! These new formats are still so relatively new that I have used neither of them so I'm not really worried about it right now. We can always hope for the future...I believe that one of these formats now is an option on the newer Mac Pro but I have not looked into it yet. Thanks!
LeMacMan, iWeb 1.1 lets you upload you data to your host straight from iWeb. Please could you find a macbook pro, like from a mate and then do a review on both and then compare them . keep with the videos
Hey LeMacMan, great video as always. Helpful, too. (I just switched to Macs as well.) To convert VOB files to MPEG-4 or H.264, try Handbrake -- it's open source and works a treat.
I'll have to try that out. I had heard about it before but never really tried it out. When I download it, I'll definitely put it in a review to let people know that that is a solution to the .vob problem. THANKS
When you said that no button would turn off the alarm on iAlertU. Couldn't you just hold down the power button until the computer shut off then just restart it?
Nice catch! I just tried it and the power does cut off, leaving the computer unprotected. Maybe the software engineers can address this in future updates to the software but maybe not, as the power button is very much the last resort (short of disconnecting the battery) when all else fails... Thanks!
To play the file you will need the FLV player and to get it in iTunes you will need iSquint which will convert it into a playable format on the iPod and iPhone it will also be a lot smaller file around 2-3GB.
