  • Matthew is alot funnier and I think it brings a little more mirth to this than the original. They are both great but this is by FAR my favorite version!

  • I adore this movie. It is such an improvement over the original. I lent it to a friend and they refused to give it back because they loved it too. The friendship ended over it because they knew it was wrong but didn't want to let go of the movie. I just rebought it. Broderick is excellent in this. There is a pep in his step and voice that the original lacked.

  • I've loved Victor Garber ever since I've seen Godspell. Now I'm not of the original Music Man's generation, but I have watched it many, many times & I love it a lot nobody can touch it. Great actors, acting, singing & performance. Nevertheless I may be guessing. However this one was probably made to bring the well loved classic to a younger generation. I a more ethnic friendly setting. There is a lot of good scenes in this one that I like. So people stop comparing sit back & enjoy.God bless.

  • It's the pied piper! They better hurry and pay him! :-)

  • I wonder if Mr. Broderick ever took the time to watch the original. Not to copy or mimic but just to get a good idea of the energy required to really do justice to the words and music. This is one remake that they could have shelved...permanently. Yeesh.

  • the comments about how matthew broderick looks silly singing and dancing just kind of make me laugh, because he's won a tony for singing and dancing around, and been nominated for tonies. he's a brilliant actor singer and dancer, and just because he did the role different than robert preston doesn't make it bad. as an actor i would say trying to mimic someone else's style it stupid, and a bad method of acting. you go for originality, especially in an iconic role

  • Anyone else really want them to say, "Oh Captain my captain" when they were on the desks?

  • matthew broderick was pretty bad, and he even admitted he wasn't good at all in this role.

he said they asked him to do it, and since he loved the show so much he said yes.

  • I respect and love matthew but I seriusly beleev the previus one had much more charisma....but its just MY opinion...

  • He can carry a tune, but I don't think he's actually a great singer. He's a good actor, and I LOVE him in Godzilla. Pretty sure I had a crush on him for years because of that movie. But he's just not right in the musical role and looks silly dancing around. Preston is more enthusiastic, sings better, and doesn't look so awkward dancing and jazz hands ;) I haven't gotten to the library scene yet, which is my favorite in the original. I hope he does okay with that one!

  • Matthew doesn't have energy:P

  • Tommy and zanita are crazy good dancers.

  • OK, the last time I saw this was in 2003 when it premiered on the Wonderful World of Disney. I was 13 at the time and a short attention span, and since then I had always been skeptical of this version, but seeing that bit with Mathew Brodrick and that little girl just one me over.

  • SOmeone told me that Dick Van Dike was in a stage production of Music Man, I can easily see him as Harold Hill,

  • I love him dearly.. Would hate to be compared to the incredible Robert Preston, like trying to be Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind. Will only be one real Music Man to me. Sorry Matthew!

  • QUIT HATING ON BRODERICK. HES A FABULOUS ACTOR AND I THINK HE DID GREAT IN THIS ROLE.. IM SURE THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE ARE HATING ON HIM IS CUZ THEY CANT REALLY SING THEMSELVES.. PEOPLE NEED TO STICK TO THEIR TALENTS!! ENOUGH SAID

  • @hartleychase I SECOND YOUR STATEMENT!!!! Matthew Broderick is BRILLANT!!!

  • @hartleychase AMEN! I THIRD IT

  • @hartleychase He's okay, it's just that the other guy was better.

  • @hartleychase No. It's because Robert Preston made the role his own. There was also a stage revival which didn't do as well as the original for largely the same reason.

Also, he wasn't fast enough for Trouble.

  • broderick is better than preston but shirley is better than cheno

  • Broderick is good because he is different from the original. People should stop hating him just because he isn't Preston. If he wasn't good, the directors, heads of casting, etc. wouldn't have chosen him for this role.

  • I just realized why Matthew's so bad at this. (besides the fact that he can't sing or dance bwhaha) It's because he realllllllllllllllllllllly sound like UNDERDOG when he sings! seriously if you've never seen underdog, watch a vid real quick and you'll see how right i am bwhahaha

  • Man. This guy couldn't hold a candle to Robert Preston. It makes me almost sick that they had this monotone guy play Harold Hill....not only that he is very monotone, he really needs more energy. Oye.

  • I cannot bring myself to watch this whole scene. Stick to Robert Preston.

  • i love this song!

  • This just robs current audiences of the best Music Man with Preston. They would have done better to just clean up and digitize the video from his performance in the 60's

  • just think about this... if this version was exactly the same as the last one there would be no point in making it and that goes across the board with all remakes...now granted Brodericks performance may not be Preston's but it is still good. he is a good actor and this is a good remake especially in comparison to other non cartoon Disney movies. besides he is a well off actor for a reason... are you? no... therefore you cannot make assumptions about how much work he has or has not put in it

  • 3:39-3:55 Put on a Happy Face? Anybody?

  • That was so bad I can't even watch the whole thing

  • This was a really good remake...but, er...why exactly did they remake it? It's no better than the original with Robert Preston.

  • Fuck... Colonel Shaw really lost it....

  • I don't think matthew was the best choice for thus role in fact the original was just so much better!!!!!

  • Uh...Matt, you are aware that this is the Music Man...not The Producers...STOP BEING SUCH A WIMP!!!!

  • The original was better.

  • @MereandMelShow Well she's not actually a friend of MINE, but she's friend's with my sister and goes to my high school.... her name is Raquel Cadilha if you get bored and want to look her up :P Hahah

  • JOHN PHILLIP SOUSA IS MY HERO!

I'm glad he was mentioned in the song. XD

  • Matthew Broderick is one of America's great heart warming actor.i admire the music in this movie.very very good.sometimes i pay a little more attention to music in movies depending on the plot

  • Matthew is such an adorable little puppy dog. *squish*

  • a friend of mine is the little girl who dances with him on the bench :P

  • inspector Gaget can sing?!?!?!?!? WHAT!

  • No one could ever come close to Robert Preston...

  • I like Broderick's charm in this one. I love Preston, but Broderick's just so cute! x3

  • Have you people ever seen Hello Dolly!? Dolly is the woman Harold Hill.

  • i much prefer prestion over broderick for harold hill

  • I think this guy (yes I know his name but I'm too lazy to type it), did a very good job in this role. I have seen multiple versions and I always, personally, had imagined this role as a more playful role and I think Broderick did a very good job :) In terms of simple acting skills....He isn't as good as Preston but I think in energy and playfulness he is a little better

  • Sorry Matthew, you were great in Ferris Bueler and you were suited for your role in the Producers....you suck as Harold Hill.

  • matthew was in another film called ferris bueller's day off watch it its awsome

  • yes, let's not give it away or anything!!

    2:17

  • When he says "Johnny, Willy, Teddy, Fred!" he totally sounds like Robert Preston. (:

Ive watched this like 400 times in a row... Matthew Broderick is SO cute.<3

  • <3 Only in a musical... <3

  • oh gosh i forgot how much i love this movie... absolutely wonderful!

  • At this part I always picture him leading all the children into a white paneled van.

P.s what happened to part 3? And what happened in it?

  • Think about how weird it would be if people randomly broke out into singing in real life and everyone heard background music. XD

  • My friends and I joke that this guy uses Jedi Mind Tricks on everyone throughout the movie.... Anyone else notice that it seems just like that? xD

3:40 - 4:07 is actually how you do a real Jedi Mind Trick. xD match yourself up with the person's movements and breathing and everything, and then you'll subtly begin to control them.

  • NO HE TOUCHED THE PLUME BLASPHEMY!!! Sorry, Imma marching band geek and our plumes are special feathers that get all hard and brittle if they get oily.... Love this song though, and Matthew Broderick is just awesome ^_^

  • @PhantomFan14 I know what you mean. I was in band for six years and I handled the plumes XD

  • This role apparently was not right for Matthew Broderick. He looks bored for the entire show. it looks like he's just going through the motions. There's no expression on his face.

  • @ruthanastasia EXACTLY!

  • @ruthanastasia He ALWAYS looks expressionless in the musicals he does! At least, in the movie versions of the musicals he looks bored. He does the same thing in The Producers as he does here-- it's freaky!

  • I think the problem with his performance is energy. The way he is singing the lyrics do not have any umf to it. Kinda monotone.

  • TOMMYYY <3

  • 3:47-4:07 reminds me of that scene in bye bye birdie where that girl is sad and the guy dances with her to make her feel better lolmaybe it's just me..

  • I'm not sure there are enough negative adjectives in the dictionary to describe how much Matthew Broderick sucks.

  • I've only seen bits of either play, but I love the energy Broderick puts into his roles and I just love Kristin period, so this is the one I'm checking out. And I know how stupid it is but I tend to like remakes better :p Go ahead and flame me, I'll just ignore you.

  • i love this movie. i've seen it so many times i can't even begin to count.

    i love matthew broderick.

    i love kristin chenoweth.

im sick of everyone comparing it to the original. if you don't like this version, don't watch it.

sorry i dont mean to be grumpy but that's ALL i'm reading in the comments!!

  • The older girls Had to have taken ballet.

  • What? No French Horns?

  • They should've gotten Hugh Jackman to play this role! There's a guy with charisma!

  • Matthew Broderik: "I'm Professor Harold Hill."

    Me: "No you're not."

Robert Preston is the only Harold Hill to get it right,

  • Comment removed

  • my first musical i saw. absolutely bloody amazing.

i dont care if preston was "better" because broderick is still really good :)

&& kristin chenoweth........words cannot describe kristin chenoweth hahah

  • Matthew Broderick is great because he brings his own kind of quirkiness to the character, he's not just replaying a role.

  • @finch3214 But his deliver is so slow. Harold Hill is a fast-talking salesman. He didn't slow down to make sure you hearrd every word he said. Bueller should have studied Preston.

  • Aside from the spoken songs there is one thing this version is lacking in comparison to the original.

Robert Preston has super powers. He would literally use his ability to cause people to burst into song in order to further his own means. That was what made his performance resonate so much for me. On multiple occasions he starts people to singing and brushes his hands clean and slides away. Beautiful.

I dunno, all of Broderick's songs seems to have no soul.

  • Ok, personally, Robert Preston is better, and Tommy Jev vas is better in the first film adaptation! I still like this tho. :)

  • 3:40 - by fafr my favorite part in this portion of the movie :) so cute

  • has anyone noticed that basically every song in the first act is just spoken for the most part?

  • @wew1llr0ckyou Yeah, I was totally just thinking about that 5 seconds ago...

  • I'm sorry but I think it's got to be said: Matthew Broderick is a little too stiff for this role. He seems like a very nice fellow, but certainly not a con man. If he were the original Harold Hill, then I'm afraid that the Music Man might never have been as popular as it is today.

  • yeah you are right the other one is better

  • Oh gosh... How i <3 musicals :) I mean the spontanius break into song and dance and them knowing every single word to a song that doesn't exist:) and them knowing every single dance move while doing it perfectly and in unison... I love how there ain'ta care in the world. Also, how there props just seem to appear out of no where. Wow, you gotta love musicals :)

  • i was one of the towns children at the victoria theartre in ohio in 2010

  • I LOVE the choreography in this number!

  • Preston is better... but Kristin and Shirley are BOTH fabulous. But Broderick doesn't have the swagger and charisma that Bob Preston had.

  • ok no offense but this thing was goin crazy on my comp. it would freeze n i got sick of it but the movie is great

  • Excellent choreography.

  • Poor imitation to Robert Preston--I've seen close imitations who were good--this is not one of them. it's like seeing a man with a full head of hair play the kiang of siam.

  • Can't even touch Robert Preston's performance. You really believed his performance. He had the energy and the excitement. . . .Watching this one and comparing it to the other . . . . can't hold a candle. Robert Preston wins hands down!!!

  • @Demithegoddess how right you are. even the original movie used the same same choreography as thje stage play--same choreographer. this is just horribly bad. the show stopping number makes me want to change the channel

  • love, Love, LOVE Matthew Broderick! Absolute genius!

  • Oh god what if life really was like this? Everyone breaking out into random song and dance O.o

  • @monkeydancer411 I would enjoy life!

  • @ExtremeNerd2000 I would too =P MOST of the time

  • THOSE KIDS AREN'T ROLL STEPPING!! lol, jk

  • he better at dancing tho

  • he has a pretty ok voice

  • he has a pretty ok voice

  • Rehearsal Tracks

  • Robert Preston pwns him.

  • my school is doing this musical. this is my absolute favorite song.

  • we are doing this for our school

  • My brother did this play and he played Harold Hill.

  • I am Zaneeta and it is amazing!

  • i just got done playing mayor shinn in my high schools version. it was so much!

  • This is definitely one of the best parts of the movie.

  • Marion's face out 0:06 is PRICELESS!

  • @89AEF LOL..Broderick is FAT?

I would have loved to see Hugh Jackman..In this..He would have been able to play a smarmier HAROLD HILL..He's an amazing performer..!

But I am just thrilled that some of the old classics are being re-visited.

  • @karmakomodia Oh Hell Yes! I Knew Harold Needed A Better Actor, But I Couldn't Figure Who Until Now!

  • @karmakomodia Hugh Jackman is just amazing in general :)

  • Keep on listening to it and try to sing along

  • i have to do an vocal audition for 76 trombones.! i cant find the perfect pitch.. cause its a guys part but my teacher wants us to do it sooo yea. i dont know who i should try out for. I might just do zaneeta or someone. any ideas help!

  • The guy who played Harold Hill in original Music Man was more charismatic than Matthew Broderick, in my opinion. However, I like Broderick's voice more in this version. Besides, this version is more true to the script than the original one.

  • is this guy diffrent from the 'ya got trouble song' they look completly diffrent

  • psh i love this movie u all just think the 1st is better cuz it was first, me i saw this one first so i like it better, its just the "new magic" type thing is the way it works mathews is great

  • This is not a role for Matthew... sorry.

  • @OzAnthony You SAID it.

Those of you who think Mr. Broderick made a FOOL of himself in this, raise your hand.

  • can you imagine all of them dancing without the music.i mean.where the hell is it comin from anyway.if i were in that situation id be callin my local therapist not givin my money to some random stranger

  • In musical land, it's not uncommon for somebody to burst into random song and dance.

  • its called a musical, because there is music

  • I liked the original Harold better..

  • The guy @ my highschool was better than Matthew, in fact he was better then most ppl, except for Preston!

  • I'm not sure why this needed to be remade.

  • That's a good point, since the original was so awesome.....on the other hand, though, I'm happy to see a modern movie that isn't all about swearing every other word and solving your differences with guns.

If hollywood producers could make an original, great musical, I'm sure they would start to get more popular.

  • what the heck is a double-bell euphonium?

  • We play "Seventy-Six Trombones" in our town's municipal band all the time. My best friend and I play trombone, and we just have a ball playing it. We're such band geeks!

  • 3:44 is so a bye bye birdie moment lol

    cute

  • He looks scared compared to zrobert Preston.

  • Mathhew is soooo adorable. and a voice of beauty haha

  • I think this remake is just as good as the original.. the music is still always going to be my favorite

  • I love the music in this movie!!!

  • I think they both did great. but i honestly think that robert preston didnt have as much zest as matthew persay, but i do think he did better acting :)

  • 1:32.... hahaha that look on his face and that little dance...

and as much as i adore matthew broderick , i must say that robert preston was absolutely incredible in that role..

  • lol

  • @ChantezDeLaPaix04 I agree, Ferris aint got nothing on the Preston

  • well i think robert preston AND matthew broderick are great

  • IK Right

  • @bluesky296

I've only seen this version, and I can't find the one by Robert. D=

I really like this one.. but if you can find me Robert, I'd compare.

  • @kittenless Type "Ya Got Trouble" in the seach bar and it's uploaded by WarnerBrosOnline. It's short, but you will get the general idea

  • meh, he's no preston, but then again, who really is? he does the best he can for being used to being the shy, nervous, blundering funny guy. while i will always love the first one the best, i still enjoy this version.

  • Oh dear.

  • Why did they remake this? The original was perfect.

  • Now being a musical fanatic I have to say that there are very many interesting musicals out there, but Meredith Willson's The Music Man is a fabulous piece of work. In my personal opinion it may even top the favorite list. I think that musicals like this one are few, and now adays there is only one brand of musical. The Pop Musical Era. I strongly praise the works of Lloyd Webber, Schonberg, and Wildhorn; but Kander, Strouse, and Willson have created a grand era that ought to be praised.

  • what style of music starts at 3:16

  • sounds like swing to me, sorta

  • when i saw this movie, i really loved the dresses the girls were wearing

  • OMG WHAT DID THEY DO TO THIS MOVIE ?

  • They tarred, feathered, burned, and pissed on it.

  • now thats what most people consider spontneous dancing! God i love this movies (older and newer versions)

  • It brings back a lot of memories. We need a new era of 76 trombones and the likes of Sound of Music....

  • What's wrong with a pool taable? And why is it a boys band? It's been a while since I watched this movie, so I'm lost.

  • well, in those days, they had only introduced pool, and it was considered a hooligan's game, because it had holes to get the ball into, as opposed to billiards, the more gentlemanly sport, where you were scored according to how many times you hit the ball off the side of the table. So, if your little boy plays pool, he'll end up smoking, skipping out of chores, etc. Con man harold hill tells them that a band will solve the problem, simply because it will be expensive, meaning more money for him.

  • @SuicidalMickeyMouse3: The pool table was just an excuse to get the townspeople attention. As for the boys band, the setting is set at around the early 1900s judging by the outfits and in those years it was a boys only band if I remember correctly.

  • @yamiyugifangirl True. Girls wore dresses and it was considered weird if they wore pants. That's why in parades, they twirled flags and things like that.

  • omg. simba. same voice. just realized that.

  • lol, i like how the mayor is concerned that Iowans would get so excited. Man, when Iowans get excited--look out, something's afoot. :P

  • Oh my word,

    It's about passion my friend.

    Not here I'm afraid.

  • This "actor" is no Harold Hill.

  • I don't know why, but I rather enjoy the flatness...it's so awkwardly hilarious

  • i must say the dancing is incredible...and the acress who plays zeneeta is very good and she oviously much older and is now on broadway in the production of shrek..ive never seen the original music man but i like this one

  • Don't you just love it when people stop everything their doing in life to right at the exact same moment dance to a choreographed song?

  • DX oh dear...

  • Personally, I just don't feel that Matthew Broderick portrayed the energy needed for this role. This scene is supposed to be him giving energy off, so he gets the kids excited, but his performance lacks the enthusiasm. He's just flat

  • I agree. Good actor but could of done a tad bit better.

  • I don't get it!

They cast Vic Garbor in the film and they DON'T GIVE HIM THE LEAD ROLE??? WHAT A WASTE!!!

  • This movie is nothing compared to the original... what a shame

Matthew Broderick, speak up dood! i can barely hear ya! No energy, no energy!

  • when I first watched this movie, I thought that, if you looked really quickly, Mr. Broderick looked a little like a young Mike Myers XD

  • matthew broderick is great he isn't the same as robert preston but that makes him good. i like what he did with harold hill

  • Broderick brings his own charm to the character, I think, but there will only be one true Harold Hill, and that's Robert Preston.
