If it fails, the courts get involved with your life, stating who is entitled to what, who is allowed to see the kids when, and it can take years for you to be officially divorced. If I love someone, I don't need a piece of paper that says I love them, and if I seperate from them, I don't need a court order telling me to let them see their kids. They're THEIR kids too!

Just an opinion here, hate if u like, i think mariage is just a union between two beings. Love is an emotion felt between two people regardless of any factors. Love is not something u can dictate, or engineer, or change. Love cannot, or at least should not, be forced to benefit anybody but the two people getting married. And at least from a political standpoint, who a person wants to be with for the rest of their lives, should only be dictated by their happiness with said person.

Kinship is, or used to be, the central domain of socio-cultural anthropology, and kinship structures worldwide are really quite varied. It's possible to have corporate kin groups, exogamic kindreds, polygyny, any number of residence patterns (even living with the maternal uncle, which would be bizarre to us) - you name it. There are some commonalities, but the nuclear family isn't one.
