  • So Great you listed the other songs from the show! HATS OFF TO YOU!!!

    SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • wow i am mesmerized that voice of the early 80's it's so pure and sweet

Jerry just glad we have this to always look back

  • I just found this recording. I was at this show some 30+ years ago, and now listening to this for the second time, a teardrop appears in my eye. It is so amazing the things we take for granted. Having watched this show live, and not knowing how moved I could be later on down the line. Thank you Thomas Edison, Thank you Ethan Deitrich but most of all Thank you Jerry for the rich full life I have enjoyed because of you!! I am now an emotional wreck...

  • What a sad loss Jerry is for those folks who appreciated real music played with joy and humor not to mention a whole heap 'o skill & love. Blessings man.

  • Its so moving his faith lead him on

  • The cut is brutal, even more so because this version is absolutely sublime. Jerry at pretty close to his best. Thanks for the post nonetheless.

  • John Kahn was a smoker? Seriously - discovering early 80's (80-83) JGB was a revelation! Do the discoveries and surprises ever end?

  • @BrooklynAtty And a junkie who died of an OD. It's so tragic what ended up happening to these incredibly talented musicians. After tuning in and turning on, you either went straight or died. I'm still here, more than 40 years after my last joint.

  • @TheDrmedina was cancer got him. r.i.p. brrother

  • very kewl-gotta luv thisstuff!

  • Was at this one . . . front row, stage right, jerry right above . . . . . . seems like a lifetime ago . . .

  • I would consider rare video footage of Ozzie Allers – keyboards, vocals and

Johnny de Foncesca – drums,,,,,,,,,, very nice

  • I made it to this show, it's a great one, Garden State Jerry !!!! Thanks for finding this nugget and putting it up, it's been 31 years but it seems like yesterday. ~Jurassic Blueberries

  • who wrote this song? Old Standard...Lowell George...Jon Sebastian?

  • @69ardentartist jimmy cliff

  • who wrote it? old standard, lowell george, jon sebastian?

  • WE WERE AT THIS SHOW AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 17 I AM PRETTY SURE AFTER THE LATE SHOW WE WALKED OUT TO THE DIRTY,FILTHY STREETS OF PASSAIC AND IT WAS SNOWING.BUT BOTH EARLY AND LATE SHOWS THIS NIGHT WERE PRETTY MUCH OFF THE HOOK.GOING DOWN THE TURNPIKE TO THE TOWER THEATRE WAS PRETTY WILD, I COUNTED EVERY SNOWFLAKE THAT FELL,I THINK. THE 2 SHOWS AT THE TOWER WERE AS USUAL FOR THOSE DAYS FUCKING GREAT. A TOTAL OF $18 BUCKS FOR TICKETS, A HANDFULL OF CAPS AND STEMS,4 QUAALUDES AND SOME BEERS,LOVINIT

  • awesome !

  • Going to see JGB tonight in St. Pete, Fl !! Love Melvin & the band !!! Getting pysched, Will forever love & miss Jerry. I know he wants us to be happy. "the music never stopped"~ Energy, we will be together..I'll let you know how it is..can hardly wait. haven't "felt" "this" in a long, long, long, time !! : ) Peace & Love (what the world needs)

  • This guy had more soul, dignity, and foresight than anyone I've ever met. He could be complimentary even when he was putting someone (or thing) down. Check out his interview at the art show. He had no love for the side businesses and exploitation growing around him. I'll always know thats why his heart gave out. I'll miss Jerry forever, and I can't get over his music making me weep.

  • i miss jerry

  • no no no this is all wrong without lesh and weir and kreautz.

    whats with the side job?

  • @TheShampow44 what about Old and in the Way; New Riders; He played with John Kahn a lot - there were a lot of side bands that played smaller venues. The guy just loved to play.

  • me to jerry rip

  • This could be my favorite JGB cover..

  • This could be my favorite JGB cover..

  • Jerry made me laugh, cry and tremble more than any one person in my lifetime!! He had a gift that occurs once in a generation,a true master!!

  • Ahhh yes...sure makes me wanna go back.

When did we cross the boarder..? Ah, who cares ~ See yas.

  • This is from the early show. We were tripping, me driving ;- ) up the GSP from the shore for the late show, smiling, listening for the late gig.

My 13 yo sister home taping it (after giving her a quick rundown - waste tape not music)

  • I never write comments. But Jerry was the best... couldn't help but write. Not just a musician, as has already been said, but a force. He taught many of us how to be ecstatic, even religious in the real sense, before we learned more. R.I.P., my friend. You brought joy to so many. Your spirit lives on.

  • @mrab12cd34ef56 Yes it does. He is so loved by so many that he will never die. We keep him alive in our hearts

  • jerry made life easy for me.you ALWAYS WILL BE IN ME.THANKS

  • I always wonder what happened with Ozzie Ahlers (the keyboardist) this is probably my favorite JGB era, and the keyboards are big part of the reason. I love the sounds he used and his tone, so unique and he really knew how to use them.

  • @jburde just the oppisite here , terrible keyboards , horrible but PURE JERRY !

  • @head5338 fuck you dude this song is awesome

  • i listen to this everytime I get down and i always feel much much better

  • @tyssoc5 Me too, it's one of those kinds of days for me

  • continuing to go to the various Grateful Dead Family and Community shows, and dropping in occasionally on various message boards, looking at all of the views on sites like YOUTUBE, and so on, seeing generations past to present is testament to the fact that "The Music Never Stopped", so everybody keep on dancin'!

  • Tried my hand at love and friendship but all that is past and gone ,this little boy is movin' on.

  • 1st of all how old are you?

2nd - TheShampow44 - obviously you have no idea about the legacy that jerry left behind for all. For the love of god read a book and completely inform yourself before you post an opinion publicly; it just makes you look moronic. If your telling me you have know idea what JGB or the legion or mary is, well then i feel sorry for what your missing out on.

    Best Regards,

  • what the fucks Jerry Garcia Band? Isnt that Grateful Dead? I know its not but he shouldve stayed loyal

  • @TheShampow44

    um, didn't he?

  • @smilinsailorman You have no clue and should not be listening to this scared music now.............Garcia later dude....................bye

  • @deadheadable

    "scared" music?

  • Thank you for displaying these JGB cuts from that Capital theatre. I would turn only 15 years old two days after seeing these shows. I remember more from the tapes that were passes around than the actual night. This was the beginning for me, these next 2 years. So glad to see Jerry in such a small place.

  • Comment removed

  • Jerry was a healer is so many ways...brought a multi - level generaional bridge of peace and love to us,,,and he heals me to this day, after his passing...god bless....

    ((((((JERRY))))))).

  • we're so fortunate to have lived at the same time as this truly wonderful person, there will simply never be anyone who can equal what this man contributed to the music world.... he was and always will be the best.

  • @gdstafford I sooooo agree. I thought many times when I stood in front of the man that I would perhaps never again be in the presence of genius. We we're, and are, so fortunate. This piece is just sublime!!

  • Painful cut @ the end!

  • May Jesus Christ bless the soul of Jerry Garcia and all of our loved ones who have passed on and are still living on earth.+++

  • Brigs Heaven to Earth...!

    Jerry I Loves You...<3

  • When he played this song, it would always put me into this really calm and euphoric state of being. It hits a nerve in my soul. I feel very blessed to have had Jerry in my life as much as he was. It is much richer because he was in it. I can hardly believe that it has been 15 years since he left us. I still seems like it was yesterday. R.I.P. Jerry! I miss you dearly. Love, Khataroo

  • @khataroo ... I couldn't have said it better....jerry in any of his alter egos was, is, and will always be, a mystical force.

  • I'm 20, and I love the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band. Although not having gone to a show before, (would have loved to) These guys sure knew how to put off a good show!

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • wow this is so cool, makes me miss him even more than i do..right on and peace to all

  • There are a lot of Dead Heads where I live... They are mostly Junkies... I do Love the music.. But I see all these kids who look up to Jerry.. Junkies Do NOT make good role models.. Kids 13 and older shooting up.. With Jerry as their role model.. To all DeadHeads please acknowledge Jerry as a whole, and real person, faults and all.. You are helping to make more teenage Junkies; when you Glorify him so..

  • @younwhosarmy I love Jerry's music and I think he was a really great person. Yet he had is faults, and it was his addiction that killed him. I hate how the deadhead culture has become associated with hard drugs.

  • Thank You so much. Jerry loves you.

  • John Kahn passed away due to complications resulting from heart disease.

Let the rumor mills end and let his family and friends find some peace.... please

here is a great link to jerry garcia's guitars.

Steve recently wrote a fine article in vintage guitar magazine about " bolt " and jerry's last guitars

  • I vividly remember this show as we traveled up the GSP lysergically....getting off, and listening to it over WNEW. My 14 yo sister home, taping this early show on the Nak. Robert Hunter did open and in the pantheon of Garcia shows that I saw, this one easily sits in the Top 5. And oh that calliope that was 'Harder They Come' later that evening.......I still haven't got off of that ride. :)

  • i LOVE THIS thanks so much for posting this! my new favorite

  • You are correct. The promentory rider is smoking. I 've had a tape of that show for years but have not seen anything online of it.

    x

  • sweetest voice ever from a rock n roll band!! he was such a cool guy. wish i could have hung out with him and been his friend!! sure would have been fun up at the chateau!!

  • must be heaven here..

  • Anyone know the chords to this song? I figured out the "riff", the pretty one, based off a C... that's all I got :/ Beautiful song though...

  • @jburde CFC ,GFGC

    FCFC, FCFC

    E7AmE7Am,D (D7)G walk down to C

  • @jburde C F C G verse F C F C F C Em Am D G

  • @llewis5282 thanks, good idea

  • This is how I like to remember Jerry!

  • 3:42

  • this is really good stuff - are these the shows that were released on a box set? I swear by this time in Jerry's career the Dead was boring for him. His best stuff in the 80's IMO was with the Garcia band. But, that's just me.

  • the Tiger was beautiful and so was Jer.

  • Its sad to think that everyone in this video save Ahler's have passed(Defonseca to a car accident. John Kahn took his life when he heard about Jerry's death.) May they not sit in limbo to long and, finally rest in peace.

  • @limbositter I never knew that about John, so sad. Garcia and Kahn at Oregon State prison has some of the most amazing music two men have ever produced on one stage.

  • I think the Cripes sounded a bit flat. I also love the sound of Europe 72, Gator right?

  • @superkindonmymind jerry debuted " bolt' the summer of 93' with the garcia band and then with the dead in august at shoreline and in eugene, His midi simulator was set to grasp an acoustic feel. try to listen to a SBD from the fall of 93' maybe Boston. he achieved his goal quite well. he played Bolt " straight though, with JGB and it did sound different than the much heavier Irwin's. he just could not hold the irwin's any more. Top hat was on it's way, and sounds much more like rosebud. peace

  • This ozzie guy rocks on keys

  • Saw D. Koones today. Bit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ch

  • I hated "Tiger" miss the Harley Axe!!!!!

  • he was just breakin in that new "tiger" axe on this show .. he sure got some mileage out of that girl.

  • Tiger had such a great sound. She sounded so tight like a steel but low and gritty like a les paul.. then clean as a strat.

  • Fat Man still rocks

  • The keyboard section of this jam is one of the sickest jams I have ever heard!

  • This is a beautiful song..

  • Sublime

  • Damn! I love that man! What a gift to us all, he was!

  • Thank you friend.

  • Gerome Garcia had more soul than anyone on the planet !!!!!!! I got goosebumps on a regular basis !!!!! Nobody else could make me laugh, cry, and get scared all in one show ---I sure do miss him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • people talk a lot of shit about Garcia, I agree he could make you laugh cry and GOOSEBUMPS YES ALL DAY

  • Just play those rusty strings just one more time...Happy b day baby!

  • damn i've had a The Harder They Come poster and a Grateful Dead poster in my room for years now and i never knew jerry listened to jimmy cliff untill i listened to solo jerry stuff and found this and the harder they come! its great!

  • ya can tell when he likes the song ... he remembers it...go Jerry

  • Jerry,Jerry,Jerry.....aaaaahhhhhhJerry! I wish you could come back for just one more show!

  • @gypsytwig no doubt.... just one more show... how sweet that would be

  • @gypsytwig He shouldn't be dead. It's so fucking sad

  • @gypsytwig MAN HOW YOU KNOW IT , I JUST SIT HEAR AND CRY DAY BY DAY

  • Never AND I MEAN NEVER!!! will there ever be another like Jerry.... he was so much more than a musician. Look @ the legacy he left behind and he has no equal......

    Oh maybe Brittany Spears!!!....... NOT!!!

  • @iJah420 NO JERRY NO SHOW

  • im a deedhead

    sence79

  • This is such a beautiful song.

  • ya jerry

  • Jerry G singing Jimmy Cliff!!! Rock on Jerry....Rock on Jamaica

  • Jer ~~ Love ....!

  • I miss Jerry.

  • Excellent Garcia! To all those who think JGB/Dead are terrible-F U; to those who

really cherish GOOD sounds, this is THE

guy to listen to. Must be a trainload of us...

how else would he be SMOKIN' for 30 yrs.? Watch 9/20/90 MSG clip to see a

place come ALIVE! Oh well, God has

Jango, Jerry ,and SRV....He MUST be

    happy !!

  • Dont get me wrong, but I"m pretty sure if someone doesn't like the Dead, it's because all they've heard are the studio albums....once ya get a live show in there, that always seems to change things! peace to ya!

  • Somebody wrote a post one time that I always thought was great... "Grateful Dead is the school and JGB is the Church."

  • actually, yeah, you're right. D-bag.

  • This guy has never seen JGB live! Turd common ?

  • JERRYS THE BEST FORGET THE REST..

  • I'ts like Jerry is making love to his guitar, foreplay, long intimacy then the climax!!!

  • CHeck out what starts happening around 8:00 in... I love how everything picks up and starts to boogie. Wonderful clip, thank you.

  • What can you say,Jerry,no one comes close!

  • terrible! I like only fiona apple's version. <333

  • learn your roots... don't know your past, you won't know you're future... to call this terrible is a horrible disgrace to to music lovers everywhere. i agree with john... no one has ever come close to Jerry!

  • Its a very surrel experience hearing this right now. I had heard Fiona Apple's cover but thats it. Jimmy's original is one of my all time favorite songs. Its one of those songs I go to when things get bad. It's a good cover. Holds the spirit of the original but its a different take on it.

  • Hey, Three Dog Night recorded this song on their "Coming Down Your Way" album 4 years before this

  • right now it's THE JERRY and john show.GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!

  • Now I feel so chilled - yeah.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Jerry doing Jimmy. :)

  • I saw this show! Great memories. The Capital Theater was a real dump (plaster once dropped from the ceiling during a set) and the area around it seedy, but what fun! We used to sleep outside the theater for tickets before the dawn of the internet age. Thanks for posting this. Once a Dead Head always a Dead Head! Love and miss you Jer.

  • Miss YA Jer!! Never Forget The Magic!

  • Yes Jerry we miss you so Much, but your Music filled the air at The Gathering of The Vibes and everyone was happy to hear you as you came through the music Happy Birthday Brother!

  • Happy Birthday Jerry, we miss you

  • I miss Jerry so much, and I'm so sorry my kids will never get to see JGB or G.Dead play! At least I got to see them. Love ya Jerry, & thanks!!

  • Beautiful song. Jerry and Grisman do a great job with this song on a Grateful Dawg CD... This song always brings me to tears. I miss him so much

  • They tore down the Capital & put up a parking lot...Really!!

So many good shows, Jerry - Ozzy - Bruce should have been a landmark.

  • Hey ! Was this Nj

  • Love Jerry's covers of Jimmy Cliff. There's no other guitar player that's established as much versatility as Jerry Garcia. R.I.P. Thanks Ethan for this excellent post. I'm chokin' away tears as I listen and type this.

  • Thank you, Jerry!

  • getting ready to get to All Goood and cant wait. we will have a bus and hope you all will visit us. Cool Bus! Later

  • Holy shit! The cool bus!? With the thumbs up! I chilled with you guys @ some Phish shows, i forget which...2/26/03?? NICE!

  • I AM getting ChIllS !

  • Totally awesome. JERRY!!

  • I saw this show ,,, they didn't rush it ... one of the most amazing shows I ever saw ... and I've been seeing the Dead since 1968

  • yeah , . . you are right.

  • I was there too. For both the early show and late show. I saw this tour from Albany on 2/13/80 til the end. Rachel Sweet is listed on the Jerry site as being an opening act but she never made it. Ozzie Ahlers 1 and only tour with Garcia...He blew. His solos were the same every night. Glad jerry left him in limbo.

  • nice . . but jeez . . they rush the hec out of it . . it's like rwice as fast by the time it ends

  • Does anyone know who is on drums?? And is the keyboardist Nicky Hopkins. THese were the better Garcia days. God bless Jerry, Kahn, Keith and all the souls passed on. May Jesus Christ comfort them

  • Johnny De Fonsesca . .. pretty good drummer . .

i think lightning Hopkins was gone by now was gone by now . .

  • who is on keyboards then and what ever became of DeFonsesca? thanks

  • Nice to see some JGB on here... any earlier shows? This is an awsome show nonetheless... My wife just found me the disc "After midnight" it's the show from february 2nd of this same year, good show...

  • My younger brother's buddies are all big Panic kids (not knocking the band or other fans) and last Halloween they were knocking the Dead and Jerry. I just happened to have "After Midnite" out in my car. Needless to say, with the chemicals they had in their system, the After Midnite epoch on there floored them! You should have seen their faces during the Eleanor Rigby section! Priceless!

  • Thanks again

  • I wish I could have seen this man

  • Thanks for the great post! I remember taping this show off the radio (102.7 WNEW used to rock!). If memory serves, there was another radio broadcast of JGB at The Calderone Music Hall on Long Island the same week on 92.7 WLIR. Robert Hunter joined JGB onstage and did Tiger Rose and a KILLER Promentory Rider. Can anyone verify, correct and/or supply that show?

  • That show was on February 29th, 1980 in Hempstead, NY. They played an early show and a late show that day. The show you are talking about is the late show. There are tapes circulating around somewhere.

  • Thanks ethan and the man from Wichita for the responses, very helpful! All these fine GD/JGB/et al uploads have awakened many wonderful but dormant memories and the recognition of treasured tapes, lost, stolen, disintegrated. I'm slowly tracking down many old favorites with the assistance of helpful people such as yourselves.

  • Here is both late and early shows. search on JGB and find the correct date.

  • google sugarmegs and look at all the shows. Search JGB and find the date of the above referenced shows

  • Amazing!

  • "I know my faith will lead my on" What a beautiful song. JGB in 1980. Thank you for this gem.
