I just found this recording. I was at this show some 30+ years ago, and now listening to this for the second time, a teardrop appears in my eye. It is so amazing the things we take for granted. Having watched this show live, and not knowing how moved I could be later on down the line. Thank you Thomas Edison, Thank you Ethan Deitrich but most of all Thank you Jerry for the rich full life I have enjoyed because of you!! I am now an emotional wreck...
What a sad loss Jerry is for those folks who appreciated real music played with joy and humor not to mention a whole heap 'o skill & love. Blessings man.
@BrooklynAtty And a junkie who died of an OD. It's so tragic what ended up happening to these incredibly talented musicians. After tuning in and turning on, you either went straight or died. I'm still here, more than 40 years after my last joint.
I made it to this show, it's a great one, Garden State Jerry !!!! Thanks for finding this nugget and putting it up, it's been 31 years but it seems like yesterday. ~Jurassic Blueberries
WE WERE AT THIS SHOW AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 17 I AM PRETTY SURE AFTER THE LATE SHOW WE WALKED OUT TO THE DIRTY,FILTHY STREETS OF PASSAIC AND IT WAS SNOWING.BUT BOTH EARLY AND LATE SHOWS THIS NIGHT WERE PRETTY MUCH OFF THE HOOK.GOING DOWN THE TURNPIKE TO THE TOWER THEATRE WAS PRETTY WILD, I COUNTED EVERY SNOWFLAKE THAT FELL,I THINK. THE 2 SHOWS AT THE TOWER WERE AS USUAL FOR THOSE DAYS FUCKING GREAT. A TOTAL OF $18 BUCKS FOR TICKETS, A HANDFULL OF CAPS AND STEMS,4 QUAALUDES AND SOME BEERS,LOVINIT
Going to see JGB tonight in St. Pete, Fl !! Love Melvin & the band !!! Getting pysched, Will forever love & miss Jerry. I know he wants us to be happy. "the music never stopped"~ Energy, we will be together..I'll let you know how it is..can hardly wait. haven't "felt" "this" in a long, long, long, time !! : ) Peace & Love (what the world needs)
This guy had more soul, dignity, and foresight than anyone I've ever met. He could be complimentary even when he was putting someone (or thing) down. Check out his interview at the art show. He had no love for the side businesses and exploitation growing around him. I'll always know thats why his heart gave out. I'll miss Jerry forever, and I can't get over his music making me weep.
@TheShampow44 what about Old and in the Way; New Riders; He played with John Kahn a lot - there were a lot of side bands that played smaller venues. The guy just loved to play.
I never write comments. But Jerry was the best... couldn't help but write. Not just a musician, as has already been said, but a force. He taught many of us how to be ecstatic, even religious in the real sense, before we learned more. R.I.P., my friend. You brought joy to so many. Your spirit lives on.
I always wonder what happened with Ozzie Ahlers (the keyboardist) this is probably my favorite JGB era, and the keyboards are big part of the reason. I love the sounds he used and his tone, so unique and he really knew how to use them.
continuing to go to the various Grateful Dead Family and Community shows, and dropping in occasionally on various message boards, looking at all of the views on sites like YOUTUBE, and so on, seeing generations past to present is testament to the fact that "The Music Never Stopped", so everybody keep on dancin'!
2nd - TheShampow44 - obviously you have no idea about the legacy that jerry left behind for all. For the love of god read a book and completely inform yourself before you post an opinion publicly; it just makes you look moronic. If your telling me you have know idea what JGB or the legion or mary is, well then i feel sorry for what your missing out on.
Thank you for displaying these JGB cuts from that Capital theatre. I would turn only 15 years old two days after seeing these shows. I remember more from the tapes that were passes around than the actual night. This was the beginning for me, these next 2 years. So glad to see Jerry in such a small place.
Jerry was a healer is so many ways...brought a multi - level generaional bridge of peace and love to us,,,and he heals me to this day, after his passing...god bless....

we're so fortunate to have lived at the same time as this truly wonderful person, there will simply never be anyone who can equal what this man contributed to the music world.... he was and always will be the best.
@gdstafford I sooooo agree. I thought many times when I stood in front of the man that I would perhaps never again be in the presence of genius. We we're, and are, so fortunate. This piece is just sublime!!
When he played this song, it would always put me into this really calm and euphoric state of being. It hits a nerve in my soul. I feel very blessed to have had Jerry in my life as much as he was. It is much richer because he was in it. I can hardly believe that it has been 15 years since he left us. I still seems like it was yesterday. R.I.P. Jerry! I miss you dearly. Love, Khataroo
I'm 20, and I love the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band. Although not having gone to a show before, (would have loved to) These guys sure knew how to put off a good show!
There are a lot of Dead Heads where I live... They are mostly Junkies... I do Love the music.. But I see all these kids who look up to Jerry.. Junkies Do NOT make good role models.. Kids 13 and older shooting up.. With Jerry as their role model.. To all DeadHeads please acknowledge Jerry as a whole, and real person, faults and all.. You are helping to make more teenage Junkies; when you Glorify him so..
@younwhosarmy I love Jerry's music and I think he was a really great person. Yet he had is faults, and it was his addiction that killed him. I hate how the deadhead culture has become associated with hard drugs.
I vividly remember this show as we traveled up the GSP lysergically....getting off, and listening to it over WNEW. My 14 yo sister home, taping this early show on the Nak. Robert Hunter did open and in the pantheon of Garcia shows that I saw, this one easily sits in the Top 5. And oh that calliope that was 'Harder They Come' later that evening.......I still haven't got off of that ride. :)
sweetest voice ever from a rock n roll band!! he was such a cool guy. wish i could have hung out with him and been his friend!! sure would have been fun up at the chateau!!
this is really good stuff - are these the shows that were released on a box set? I swear by this time in Jerry's career the Dead was boring for him. His best stuff in the 80's IMO was with the Garcia band. But, that's just me.
Its sad to think that everyone in this video save Ahler's have passed(Defonseca to a car accident. John Kahn took his life when he heard about Jerry's death.) May they not sit in limbo to long and, finally rest in peace.
@limbositter I never knew that about John, so sad. Garcia and Kahn at Oregon State prison has some of the most amazing music two men have ever produced on one stage.
@superkindonmymind jerry debuted " bolt' the summer of 93' with the garcia band and then with the dead in august at shoreline and in eugene, His midi simulator was set to grasp an acoustic feel. try to listen to a SBD from the fall of 93' maybe Boston. he achieved his goal quite well. he played Bolt " straight though, with JGB and it did sound different than the much heavier Irwin's. he just could not hold the irwin's any more. Top hat was on it's way, and sounds much more like rosebud. peace
Gerome Garcia had more soul than anyone on the planet !!!!!!! I got goosebumps on a regular basis !!!!! Nobody else could make me laugh, cry, and get scared all in one show ---I sure do miss him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
damn i've had a The Harder They Come poster and a Grateful Dead poster in my room for years now and i never knew jerry listened to jimmy cliff untill i listened to solo jerry stuff and found this and the harder they come! its great!
Never AND I MEAN NEVER!!! will there ever be another like Jerry.... he was so much more than a musician. Look @ the legacy he left behind and he has no equal......
Dont get me wrong, but I"m pretty sure if someone doesn't like the Dead, it's because all they've heard are the studio albums....once ya get a live show in there, that always seems to change things! peace to ya!
learn your roots... don't know your past, you won't know you're future... to call this terrible is a horrible disgrace to to music lovers everywhere. i agree with john... no one has ever come close to Jerry!
Its a very surrel experience hearing this right now. I had heard Fiona Apple's cover but thats it. Jimmy's original is one of my all time favorite songs. Its one of those songs I go to when things get bad. It's a good cover. Holds the spirit of the original but its a different take on it.
I saw this show! Great memories. The Capital Theater was a real dump (plaster once dropped from the ceiling during a set) and the area around it seedy, but what fun! We used to sleep outside the theater for tickets before the dawn of the internet age. Thanks for posting this. Once a Dead Head always a Dead Head! Love and miss you Jer.
Yes Jerry we miss you so Much, but your Music filled the air at The Gathering of The Vibes and everyone was happy to hear you as you came through the music Happy Birthday Brother!
Love Jerry's covers of Jimmy Cliff. There's no other guitar player that's established as much versatility as Jerry Garcia. R.I.P. Thanks Ethan for this excellent post. I'm chokin' away tears as I listen and type this.
I was there too. For both the early show and late show. I saw this tour from Albany on 2/13/80 til the end. Rachel Sweet is listed on the Jerry site as being an opening act but she never made it. Ozzie Ahlers 1 and only tour with Garcia...He blew. His solos were the same every night. Glad jerry left him in limbo.
Does anyone know who is on drums?? And is the keyboardist Nicky Hopkins. THese were the better Garcia days. God bless Jerry, Kahn, Keith and all the souls passed on. May Jesus Christ comfort them
Nice to see some JGB on here... any earlier shows? This is an awsome show nonetheless... My wife just found me the disc "After midnight" it's the show from february 2nd of this same year, good show...
My younger brother's buddies are all big Panic kids (not knocking the band or other fans) and last Halloween they were knocking the Dead and Jerry. I just happened to have "After Midnite" out in my car. Needless to say, with the chemicals they had in their system, the After Midnite epoch on there floored them! You should have seen their faces during the Eleanor Rigby section! Priceless!
Thanks for the great post! I remember taping this show off the radio (102.7 WNEW used to rock!). If memory serves, there was another radio broadcast of JGB at The Calderone Music Hall on Long Island the same week on 92.7 WLIR. Robert Hunter joined JGB onstage and did Tiger Rose and a KILLER Promentory Rider. Can anyone verify, correct and/or supply that show?
That show was on February 29th, 1980 in Hempstead, NY. They played an early show and a late show that day. The show you are talking about is the late show. There are tapes circulating around somewhere.
Thanks ethan and the man from Wichita for the responses, very helpful! All these fine GD/JGB/et al uploads have awakened many wonderful but dormant memories and the recognition of treasured tapes, lost, stolen, disintegrated. I'm slowly tracking down many old favorites with the assistance of helpful people such as yourselves.
So Great you listed the other songs from the show! HATS OFF TO YOU!!!

learn your roots... don't know your past, you won't know you're future... to call this terrible is a horrible disgrace to to music lovers everywhere. i agree with john... no one has ever come close to Jerry!

Beautiful song. Jerry and Grisman do a great job with this song on a Grateful Dawg CD... This song always brings me to tears. I miss him so much

Glad jerry left him in limbo.

nice . . but jeez . . they rush the hec out of it . . it's like rwice as fast by the time it ends

Does anyone know who is on drums?? And is the keyboardist Nicky Hopkins. THese were the better Garcia days. God bless Jerry, Kahn, Keith and all the souls passed on. May Jesus Christ comfort them
sharegrace 4 years ago

Nice to see some JGB on here... any earlier shows? This is an awsome show nonetheless... My wife just found me the disc "After midnight" it's the show from february 2nd of this same year, good show...
cornwejf 4 years ago

TallBrianFromNapa 4 years ago
That show was on February 29th, 1980 in Hempstead, NY. They played an early show and a late show that day. The show you are talking about is the late show. There are tapes circulating around somewhere.

Thanks ethan and the man from Wichita for the responses, very helpful! All these fine GD/JGB/et al uploads have awakened many wonderful but dormant memories and the recognition of treasured tapes, lost, stolen, disintegrated. I'm slowly tracking down many old favorites with the assistance of helpful people such as yourselves.
