Master tempo sets the CD to its original tempo. if all your cds are set the same you would never need to touch the Pitch, loads of djs are doing this now..
Every video i have watched about mixed in key misses a very important point.. its good labeling all your tracks on one cd all in the key of lets say 11a (f Sharp- minor) but what people forget is the tempo, when you move the tempo you move the key of the tracks.. so yeah the program has told you the key but with you moving the tempo the key has changed also...
@jordan0076 I understand the change in key when tempo changes, however if you are using CDJs or Serato/Traktor, there is a button that will automatically keep the key even when you change tempo. It's a handy tool for matching songs at any tempo. On a side note, I also print the BPM of the track on my CD label so I know if I'm changing speed to match the next song.
@g1gamanx There is no button on CDJ's that does such a thing. I don't know about Serato. There is a feature on DJM 800 where you can use Harmonic mixing sounds rubbish tho, The only way in my opinion is to put the BPM next to the track and the key sounds by far the best.. You can do it the Hard way with a Keyboard or Buy Mixed in key. makes life a whole lot easier.
How do you tell what key the song is in the first place? And what happened to the system of a song being in the key of the scale? Like the key of C or the key of F? Where did this numbering system come from? Maybe Im just thinking like a traditional musician, but if you buy sheet music there is a notation for the key, and it doesnt have a number.
Dj what? you are absolutely correct and I am a classic piano player so I know what you mean. The difference is that not everyone can remember all the major, minor, blues, harmonic, etc scales. So some guy came up with the ingenous method of using simple codes to determine what scales sound good together. I use Mixmeister studio to determine scale although you could also use MixedInKey.
There are situations where genre can be helpful, but as a club DJ, it makes little difference. The reason being is that all gigs ask for a certain type of music. Whether its a house set, drum and bass, or dubstep, the audience and promoters are expecting a certain genre already. This changes for DJs who cross genres. For example, a wedding DJ would need to cross between genres from classical to 80s to Top 40. Either way, ID3 tags can help categories music in all of these ways.
Can the mixmiester program be used with vinyl? Thats amazing someone really did create that system. I tried to explain to a musician friend once that is is possible for certain songs of different keys to mix. Now it seems it is also possible some songs are so simple that they may not really be in any key. i mean these minamalist techo joints, that seem to mix with anything, or a droning didjeridoo, too simple to offend most scales.
Thank you, I don't mind sharing! I have changed my system somewhat since the original post. I now catalog all my music on the PC in the same way. Using the (1A), (2A) labels in the ID3 tag of mp3s. They show up just fine in Traktor and Serato.
I see. I am just starting up as a DJ after being a bedroom DJ for several years and Im going to organize my music by key aswell. I've already spent like 5 days organizing. Things begins to fall into place now. I've also bought 400 blank cd-r's for my CD case.
My main organazing is actually not key, but genre. Then its organized in key, within the different genres. And then, inside each CD.. First tracks are downtempo, then more and more uptempo and uplifting towards the end.
Actually, I update at least every month, if not every couple of weeks with new tunes and tracks. I'm always tweaking my CDs to keep them fresh. It's just a matter of reburning a playlist I have on my PC for that key. I add/remove songs and burn the playlist again. CDs are cheap as chips :)
I choose to use MixMeister to catalog, key, and burn all my playlists. It's also a simple tool to see how songs are going to blend without me having to burn them first. I have noticed lately I need to tweak the beginning or end of some songs so they are easier to mix, MixMeister lets me splice songs also. Kind of an all in one tool that has worked out fairly well. Best of luck!!
I chose to use MixMeister Fusion. It has a little more than I need, but that gives me room to grow. I didn't want the video portion as I am not intending on doing video production.
@jordan0076 Great point on recording. Changing key never sounds quite the same. Thanks for expanding on the comments for everyone!
