  • The timing and accuracy needed make this difficult under chaotic circumstances. This will have a high failure rate.

  • #1: One hand block does not work against knife. He can do double sting with a knife.

#2: You should take control over the hand which is holding the knife. This is common principe in aikido and nintai-jutsu.

#3: Never turn the blade from the sharp side, always turn from the flat side.

And watch Choson Ninja videos, this man teaches crap. I'll bet the japanese were joking when they taught him.

  • @1DemonicBebeGringo I guess you don't know what lethal means

  • This guy is going to get people killed. DON'T LISTEN TO THIS B.S.

  • you're gonna get some nerds killed

  • pfft if someone tried to stab me and i had his arm like that i put all my weight on it and snap it in two, no mercy for the person trying to lethally wound me

  • As well everyone keeps saying you can't grab the blade, this is bull in the heat of a real gutterfight, I'd rather have a sliced up hand than a punctured lung or cut artery. Fights are a game of odds and survival. Just like if someone swings a bat and I can't be out of its way I'd rather have my arm injured stopping it than have a smashed skull.

  • Seeing as how this is supposed to address amatuers its not so bad, however you talk of elbow control what if he slips through, and I highly doubt even an amatuer is going to stop at one thrust, when you guard then go for that elbow lock a billion things could happen. But I've never met a guy who wasn't resisting from start to finish so I think you should have addressed that, once you get that inital block he's pulling that knife back it's instinct. not hating just think thats important

  • I can't believe people are actually paying him to teach.

  • What if the guy comes really close to you then tries to gut you 10 times as fast as they can? Which an amateur or any person with an intent to kill will do.. Entering a locking technique in this kind of situation can be very difficult to do if he stabs multiple times as fast as he can. Its almost like blocking a quick jab, its hard. And as he pulls out, you can cut yourself and not get the technique.

  • deadly than trained ones since theres little chance of working out their attack pattern...you might slip and fall on the knife anything can happen you simply cannot afford to split the attackers into 2 different sets skilled and not. Also what about when your in a fist fight and you dont realise that they have a weapon untill the end of the fight and your bleeding all over the shop....ONE skill set....ONE set of options what ever that skill set may be...just my 2peneth :)

  • because sry but you wont have time to do that especially if your dealing with one attacker...perhaps open handed and his / her mate appears and carries out the knife attack...all knife attacks should be trained against all speeds of attack and also you should not make assumptions about the attackers skill...if you know what system the attacker is from (IF they train) and you know about that system ...fine if not welcome to the reality that even untrained knife attackers are deadly at times more

  • Ok problem I have here isnt the techniques (since i dont train this system I dont kno w all the details) But in what is SAID...the title seems to be saying that (and at least one comment also) that those are techniques to use against an amatuer...problem I can see is that you usually cant tell if the knife attacker is an amatuer because its often a sneak attack but also even if it isnt how do you tell an amatuer from an expert are you going to go through a detailed examinination of their

  • bulshit I KICK all you guys ass

  • also a stab with a knife is the 2nd most unlikely way for some1 to come at you with. only less likey is the over the head psycho killer attack. most often an attacker will use a slashing attack

  • this kinda of teaching is going to get some1 killed, . you are still standing in the line of attack when you do your thing and you are u are fighting aginst the attacker so if they are stronger than you they will still cut you

  • @almostkilleditall but it takes 1 second to mess it up when your cocky

  • 0:27...

    That's pretty slick. *face punch*

Bad for knife defense, but this is a good way to deal with... um... Well, it looked cool, anyway.

  • Give a 5 year old a knife, and there is a good chance of them killing you. this is completely unrealistic

  • HONESTLY- if you get into it when someone has a knife- youre gonna get cut! no doubt about it... if you cant run, take off your shirt or your belt or grab a stick anything is better than nothing. your shirt can be used to shield yourself ;)

  • would never work in reality he does not know where the attackers will strike and no one strikes that slow

  • @lukewilliams010 speed training can help you react against fast attacks. Rick Tew is demonstrating the movement slow just to help the viewer understand the defense skill. It can work in reality if only you practice with enough training. You can make your partner improving the speed and once you can do it fast, you will be able to defend yourself against anyone who wants to kill you with a knife.

  • I'd love to be able to talk to this guy for at least 5 minutes. seriously, it would be an honor.

  • @TeslaDRay this guy is an idiot whos probably never used any of his martial arts in a real life situation

  • @MDNSBS

why don't you take him on and find out how much of an "idiot" he is.

  • @TeslaDRay youve never met this guy and you're going to argue for his legitimacy? and i wont say if me of him would win in a fight but i will say he will end up dead if he tried this in real life

  • @MDNSBS

i take it that's a no then? j/k, look there are many different techniques, you gotta try them out. don't judge so hastily, that's all.

  • aaapppcchhheeeeee!! lol!

  • how do you peel if its double edged?

  • @meckillim1

well i think he said on either side of the knife as long as you make your hand flat enough and then peel, you shouldn't be cut.

  • @TeslaDRay you dont peel a knife like that ever, it wont work. get a dull knife and try it slowly. the blade will still hit your fingers no matter how carefully you try it

  • @shifutom ah it appears to be a knowledgeable kung fu man. i appreciate seeing real martial artist spreading words of real martial arts

  • @MDNSBS thanks for the message

  • @shifutom isnt it funny how when some1 makes a comment that makes sense but would mean a person is wrong such as your previous comment, it gets flagged as spam or removed . when people are proven wrong they try to make it go away instead of use the information to better themselfs.

  • i love reading the comments saying its horse shit and what not cause its not this is all good info if you can use it right

  • title says defence against amateurs and against some poser teenage gangster wannabe this might work great... If you train it often enough that it becomes instinctive (several thousand times I cant remember). If you panic, as happens 99.99% of the time (and as can be realistically expected), you wont be able to pull this off. SO yeah u can train this 5000 times or try something more reliable. up to you

  • man no one's ever going to attack with a knife so nicely, unless the guy is an absolute idiot.. with a knife all you wanna do is swing it back and forth as much as possible as quicly as possible and cut open all that comes ahead..

If someone ever comes to attack you with a knife, the only solution you got is run!!

Self defense against knife attack is just of amateurs, in real life situation it's useless believe me

  • Thats completely true.

  • @Loofized07

no, if you're a self defense expert, then you can disarm. but if it is a fellow martial artist attacking with a knife, then you have to adjust you defenses.

  • Another Tew Turnover video, I can't believe you are teaching the sacrificial limb. . . This again is, horrible. Grabbing the LIVE END OF A BLADE?!?!?! What you are teaching is going to get someone killed, TEW!!! Stop putting this crap up!!

  • @kallisilat the title is wrong. it's a wooden knife defense...

  • I don't think what he is teaching is bad

some of it is actually good

just about the blade stance Iam wondering about the weed wicker slicer attacker slasher and the defender's arms

non structure slow work would be good then speed it up if you start to feel confidance

also the use of fencing mask would be good as in knife fights people can can stabbed in the face and the neck

also with fencing mask you can speed it up and still be safe and get a great cardo work out

  • What the Frak are you doing???

  • I thought this guy gave up teaching in the valley, several of his students attended my fight club in fresno several years ago and they quit training in tew ryu after (same thing happened with pacific students, moores and some others) So much of what is taught just doesnt work when facing someone "outside" the given martial system.

Easy to agree with most of those posting here, this is bad technique/strategy, now I know why his guys quit after working with a combat/street oriented group.

  • There are effective methods of defending against a knife attack. You might still get cut, but you can learn to survive. I'm a knife attack survivor myself, and there are great techniques taught in law enforcement. These shown here however are NO good. To all you watching, you will probably get killed if you try these as taught here.

  • Purely based on my opinion and experience:

If you want to learn something that you will spend years studying that often contains excessive techniques, and is difficult to retain (requiring fine motor skills), try ninjitsu.

If you want something that is learned quickly, easily retained, usable by all, and teaches one defense against 8 strikes instead of 8 different defenses for one strike; something you can trust your life to, go with Krav Maga or something similar.

  • yes, i have...and this technique helped lots, and this is a defence against AMATURES, not trained profeshinals, like his students, who could probibaly weasel their way out before someone trys that defence

  • This guy attended the "Rex kwon do" seminar with Napoleon Dynamite. Anybody want a roundhouse kick to the face while im wearin these bad boys? . . . . Forget about it.

  • complete wrong, not even worth to comment on further

  • LOSER!!! these are ONLY for use against a amature, first you learn how to use weapons, wether it be the ancent blowdart or sai, to throwing needles and throwing starts. WE LEARN HOW TO USE THE WEAPON, learn its streingths and weaknesses. then you learn how to defend yourself against it. if the person is obviously stronger at the weapon they have than you can fight against, and don't have a weapon on you, RUN. put things beetween both of you, and run untill your at a place where they can handelit

  • 1)this is acually VERY EFFECTIVE i got into a fight against a total amature, he had the thing up to my throat, and I just peeled it right out.

2)the secret is, for all of the DUMBASSES WHO WANT TO INSULT about 100 VERY strong ninjas, that you put your hand on the BACK of the dam blade. all of his teachings are effective, I just skim through them and practice things untill they are perfect. but never test. the point of his program is ti give GUIDELINES on how to make things work for YOU

  • Rick Tew has no clue what Ninjutsu is. It is sad that people like himself, Frank Dux , and Ashida Kim can con people into believing that these people are for real. Grabbing a live blade? Are you serious? I have never heard of ANY martial art to suggest this. There are many safer and more effective techniques for knife disables. Remember that just because someone puts on a darker gi does not mean they are teaching "ninjutsu*.

  • yeah, this guy is pretty weak.. "slap the hand & walk away". lol

  • plenty of arts teach that "strip" of the knife. especially filipino arts. at that point, it's not really a "live" blade anymore. the hard part would be getting there in the first place.

  • happy death Mr. Tew

  • NICE

  • Let me start by saying i have a great deal of respect for martial artist and especially those who choose to teach. I myself am a 2nd dan blk belt in tae kwon do, and wing chun practitioner now. But in one of your videos you instructed beginners to grab ahold of a blade. Your trained and i trust that you know what works for you by now. but i can't fathom a scenario when you attempt control by handling the blade unless your guarding vital organs. maybe tailor your methods to fit young people more

  • Henry Ford said, "whether you think you can or you think you can't you may be right." And I would say anyone without the inclination to train to make techniques work, the techniques would be useless, but the techniques have worked for others. Train hard and have fun!

  • Wrong!!! there are double bladed knives!

This is not effective technique, he may cut his fingers.

  • Ahh Rick Tew, he rinsed my mate of £3500 of his hard earned cash in his bullshit Ninja Camp! Then tried to send debt collectors to UK to get another £3000 as a cancellation fee as he left the camp after a week! Realised it was shite!!

  • The point in showing this is that you will have an idea/concept on what you can do. you have to deal with prearranged attacks in order to deal with a random attack. It lays the fundamentals. I would rather learn this then know nothing.

  • this acutlly helped me alot mate thanks alot... my mate in my house went insane over a game and went mad and pulled out a kithen knife and i was like omfg mate clam down dude and i was watching youtube at the time so this helped xD

  • inhumanhearbeat, since you cite Applegate, I see you and raise you three. Six hundred years ago, several guys who actually fought with and against knives happened to write books on what to do in that situation. As it happens, the techniques they advocate for securing the arm and stripping the knife away are not unlike those the guy demonstrates in this video. Their names of these old ago guys are Fiore dei Liberi, Hans Talhoffer, and Joachim Meyer.

  • so if someone isn't trained in knife fighting yet pulls a knife....ignore the threat and engage? No attacker will be as calm and predictable as these drills, this stuff is bogus.

    I'd suggest running.

  • Hello everyone,

With peeling the knife, Sensei would use a real knife but you need to first trap trap the wrist and then peel it throught he gate of fingers like a wrist grab. Also, you cup the blade so your oalm down not touch the sharp end. Push down on your wirst and try to make a fist, not much strength huh? If you want to fight knife vs Knife, whole other game. Knife vs some who is knows how to use it, RUN or use anything to throw ot use to distract and get attn. away etc..

    RTMS TEAM

  • Hello everyone,

This is one of Rick tew's assistants. The common misconception is that these techniques are against wildly commited attacks from amatuers.A person that knows what they are doing with a knife is a whole different ballgame.

    RTMS TEAM

  • Also, all you would have to do is roll the blade over and slice his wrist open when he tries to lock you up with his forearm like that in the beginning of the video. Good point on sweaty hands... your hand might slip off of him and might even slip onto the blade causing finger loss.

  • I'm a Marine, not an ignorant twit. And yes, at 1:37 he grabs the knife by the blade from the attacker's hand. There was nothing realistic about this techinque. But if you think it is as good as all that, please feel free to try it sometime in a real life situation.

  • yeah grab that blade by the front and a smart person would just twist it cutting your shit up

  • Yes, one flick of the blade and you'll have your wrist slit open. Combat isn't static like this... there is always struggle going on this way and that. You reach out and try to grab his hand or his blade and it will probably be the last thing you ever do with that hand... maybe the last thing you ever do period. Study Col. Rex Applegate-- that man actually knew what he was talking about. Read the book "Kill or get Killed!" by Col. Rex Applegate. It's what they taught us in boot.

  • yes, i've been stabbed in the hand and i couldn't use it for a few days and even now some of my fingers are numb from the nerve damage

  • the bether solution would be to NOT grab then to use your backhand(meaning the upper part of ya hand)to disarm the attackers hand..P.S sorry for my bad english :-P

  • While I don't believe this would work IRL, he was grabbing the back side of the blade, not the cutting edge of the blade.

This is like anything else...practice it anough, and it MIGHT work. Do it a couple times in a seminar, and it's bound to fail.

  • grab a blade!

    peel it!

yeah... you like that don't you

    can I peel yo mama?

  • I'm sorry, but this will get you killed in real life. If you grab a blade in someone's hand, you're gonna lose some fingers. Good stance however- keeps the vitals out of range.
