  • Earl is the man!!!

  • How Great ! So beautiful.

  • Who is the second guitar player?

  • @dmthom If I am not mistaken that was Billy E. Powers who also was the bus driver.

  • @basfiddler You are very right!

  • your correct about Billy Powers! Glad to see someone recognize him and say his name. He was my Uncle whome I was named after and my hero. I miss him dearly. :(

  • @joshpowers1974 I did not know him personally, however I really enjoyed his singing and personality.

  • @basfiddler Your correct, that is Billy Powers. My uncle whom I was named after. He was a great great man and my hero. I miss him dearly every day :(

  • awesome

  • @captboostacious I am glad that you enjoyed the video!!!!!!!!!!

  • Uncle Josh without his hat! I'm blown away. This, by the way. one of my favorite Flatt & Scruggs tunes !!!

  • @TruegrassBoy Thanks for visiting. It was different seeing Uncle Josh without his derby.

  • Love to watch Lester pick!

  • Written by Dave "Stringbean" Akeman.

  • Is this clip from "Hootenanny"??

  • @Pickinbuddy Yes it is Hootenanny

  • This is a great old-timey tune .. it's been around for decades .. & it maybe even goes way-back to the late 19th century. The boys do a fabulous version of the song here. They can play songs such as this one standin on their heads .. & it'd still sound fantastic ...

  • who is pickin the bass on this video

  • @blobassplayer ...I'm 99% sure it is English P. ( Jake ) Tullock--(Cousin Jake)

on bass......What a THRILL to have been in that audience !

  • I've seen people completely loose their minds when this song is playing. . . particularly in recordings when they play it at a faster tempo!

  • That's the best 5 string banjo I've ever heard in my life right there. During this time when he had that mohagany neck on that granada pot..Man it sounded just...unreal!

  • I would like to know what year this performance was filmed ??? Thanks.

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL The show was on for 18 months from April 1963 through September 1964.

  • @ olehoundog1 Thanks! We bluegrassers have to stick together !

  • I sent you the name of a website to watch them play Reuben from this same show, but it did not go through probably because I spelled out the website. It's one word but I am going to send it in 3 words so maybe it won't kick out. web rats music . com

  • Thanks !

  • If you have trouble bringing it up, when you get to website type in Reuben where it says video title and you should be able to get it.

  • You can also see Reuben and Hot Corn, Cold Corn on cmt . com

  • I like the emphasis they put on "hot" , especially Jake.

  • Lester and Earl made another appearance on this show in early 1963, but without Josh. He left for a brief time after Carnegie Hall but was back for Vanderbilt live album in April '63. Kenny Haddock played dobro during this time. He was a fair player but nowhere near Josh-as if anyone is. His picture is in one of the box sets. He recorded 4 songs with them-Mama Don't Allow, Rambling Gambler, What About You and Pearl Pearl Pearl. He had played some with the Country Gentlemen.

  • Yes, Sir!

  • They also played "Reuben" on this program and for awhile it was on You Tube. Haven't seen it in a while though. I bought the DVD just to get these 2 songs.

  • What dvd are you referring too??

  • It is a DVD set of Hootenanny shows and you you have to buy the set to get the 2 songs by Lester and Earl. It is called "The Best of Hootenanny" and most all of the music is terrible except for 3 or 4 songs and the 2 by Flatt and Scruggs. If I knew how to put songs on You Tube I would put it out there, but I don't.

  • Look at the insructions on Hot Corn, Cold Corn I gave to show you how to find "Reuben" at another site.

  • @basfiddler "The Best Of Hootenanny", a three-DVDs set released by Shout! Factory. A good number of online stores have it available for sale.

  • @olehoundog1 Yeah you can see Earl right after this song is finished tune down to D.

  • The MC for this is Jack Linkletter, son of Art Linkletter.

  • This is good music right here! I enjoyed this so much, thank you for sharing!

  • You are very welcome I am glad that you enjoyed it.

  • I have been pickin bluegrass for over thirty years and there are none who can compare with the smoothness that Flatt and Scruggs had during those years. Groups today can imitate it but will NEVER duplicate what they had back then

  • I will agree!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How can they perform in front of a HUGE 360 degree audience ? That would surely make me faint ! They deserve a GOLD STAR !!!

  • Really different. I agree a GOLD STAR

  • Hootenanny

  • It's fun seeing the "Boys" without their hats. Either way, they sure knew how to dress! Wish all the bands looked as nice !

  • Appearance is so important. Yes that was different without hats. Usually they would remove their hats when playing a Gospel number.

  • We have all their great t.v. show vids. I will look to see if they have their hats removed during their hyms. Inter-sting!

  • Wish there was more DECENT music like this!!!!

  • There still is.. not as much.. but still some!I just wish it were all like this!

  • Wonder if that is Lester's bass Jake is playing on this show?? Sorta looks like the end pin is cranked a little higher than he normally used... Sure sounds great who ever it belonged to LOL!

  • Good music is all I can say! Enjoyed this so much, and thanks for sharing!

  • I am so glad that you ejoyed the music.

  • What is the fastest song Earl Scruggs can pick on the banjo?

  • Randy Lynn Rag is pretty quick

  • I ahve been listening to Earl Scruggs my whole life. I do not know that is the fastest song thar he can pick. Yes Randy Lynn Rag is pretty quick. Thanks

  • As far as beats per minute go, "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms" is one of Earl's fastest----actually faster than "Foggy Mountain Breakdown".

  • Earl plays "Rollin'" very fast,...... AND... Earl also tears it up lightening fast on "Long Journey Home !" Incredible!

  • Earl was about finess and smoothness and rolls...and putting all that into the song and melody. Which is why he's the best to ever pick up a 5 string banjer. I would have to say what everyone said..randy lynn rag is quick..foggy mountain breakdown was about 180..to 190 bpm...A lot of these guys today try to pick this crap so fast you can't hear the melody..people goin for the record on how fast they can play a banjo...little do they know it sounds like a shit eatin' dog.

  • Yes indeed great footage. Should date 1964 or some years before, from the Hootenanny show.

  • I am glad that you enjoyed it. Yes it was indeed from the Hootenanny Show.

  • Nice post it's good to see some new classic flatt & scruggs.

  • Thanks I am gald that you enjoyed it.

  • Thanks for the comment. Yes it is indeed a classic.

  • Best there ever was! Thanks for posting.

  • Hi banjobilly,

Thanks!! Yes they were the best.
