  • My aunt just gave me one of these.

  • This brings back some great memories. From OS 6 to 7 to 8 to 9 to X...Mac 512k, Mac Plus, Quadra 610, G3/233 Desktop, G4 PowerBook...it was an unbelievable time to have a Mac. Alas, the corporate world never really adopted them and I've been stuck in a PC world ever since.

  • Can I install Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar on Power Macintosh 6100 because I have PowerPC G3 processor, 40GB internal hard drive and 512MB RAM!

  • @CabaProductions1 I'm afraid not, the "Nubus" architecture of the first-generation Power Macs is very different to the later ones and so is not compatible with OS X. Many of the later Power Macs that were never supported for any version of OS X by Apple can run up to 10.2 Jaguar, and up to 10.4 Tiger if a G3 upgrade is installed (or 10.5 Leopard with a G4 processor upgrade), but with the x100 machines you are limited to OS 9.1 and below.

  • @BeigeG3 Is Power Macintosh 6100 a x100 machine?

  • @CabaProduction Yes, that just means any machine whose name is any number followed by 100 - the Power Mac 6100, 7100 and 8100 were the first generation of PowerPC Macs, released in 1994.

  • Internet Explorer O_O?

  • @animalcrossing890 Yep, separate Mac versions of I.E. were made up to version 5.1 for both the Classic OS and OS X, it was arguably the best browser for the Mac until Apple brought out their own browser in the shape of Safari, MS soon killed the Mac version of I.E. after that.

  • @BeigeG3 Okss thanks for the information ^^

  • Very nice Power Mac. I love vintage Macs. THeres just something about them that are so much more facinating that any vintage PC. I have one too and a few more that I should do videos on.

  • This Mac is faster than today's $200.00 computers , nice upgrade too :) QC

  • @Quaaludedude714

Not at all. A modern $200 computer probably has a Celeron or Sempron processor which is still over 200x faster than this computer's 60mhz PowerPC CPU, and easily over a gigabyte of ram beating this mac's measly 40MB of ram (0.04GB).

  • it is funny coz it is true

  • My G3 iMac runs 9.1 too, sorta weird seeing the difference in speed from 60MHz to 350MHz :)

  • @ThePhoneUpdate Yep, the 6100 to the G3 was a big leap in just 4 years, things definitely moved faster in this area back then than they do now, eg I doubt you would notice any difference in speed doing the things shown in this video on a brand new Mac compared with a four year old (ie Core 2 Duo) one.

  • @ThePhoneUpdate Mac OS 9.1 is the newest OS that the 6100 can run by the way, but your G3 could be updated to 9.2.2 using the free downloadable updater or as far as OS X 10.4 Tiger if you want, they are good little Tiger machines if you install enough memory.

  • @BeigeG3 There's actually 2 reasons I'm sticking with 9.1. (1. It's looks cool saying "9.1" on the startup screen, (2. I have a PowerMac G4 with Tiger, so the iMac just for classic stuff! I love the older Macs like yours though, got to get some when I find enough space :)

  • @ThePhoneUpdate Yeh PowerPC Macs are great, my newest is the Beige G3 but would like to get some newer ones like a G5 or one of the really cool designs like a G4 Cube or iMac, again when I have some more space :P

Have you given Leopard a try on your G4? In my experience it runs well on these old machines despite not being officially supported on G4s below 867 Mhz.

  • @BeigeG3 Nope, it's a Dual-450MHz G4 model with the Stock graphics card, I wouldn't hold my breath at it running as well as I would like :) It's the only Leopard compatible-ish Mac I have, all the other 3 are G3's.

  • @ThePhoneUpdate Nice, dual processor PowerPC Macs are awesome :D You'd want to upgrade to a slightly better graphics card but otherwise Leopard should run nicely on there, I set up a single-processor "Digital Audio" G4/466 for someone with Leopard a while back and it's a nice machine.

Which G3s do you have then?

  • @BeigeG3 350MHz Indigo iMac G3, 800MHz Dual-USB iBook G3, and a "Spare Parts" non-working 700MHz Dual-USB iBook. All upgraded a tad in one way or another. I don't have any graphics cards that would work in the G4 unfortunately, it's used whenever I need to use a new-ish OS X app.

  • @ThePhoneUpdate Nice G3 collection! :-)

  • This was my first mac after my Amiga 500. I recently got rid of it but it still ran like a champ with all the original hardware!

  • Reminds me of my parents 6100. They ordered it with 8MB of RAM and a 540MB hard drive. I was constantly using virtual memory which slowed that thing down to a crawl. A few years later they had an Orange PC G3 233 MHz card added to it. As of right now, I think the old sucker is still sitting in the garage.

  • The start up sound is nice :)

  • You should run Lion on that ;)

  • @RandomFilmStudio if you run lion on this it will explode :P

  • I love the slot-loading drive "shoved" into the front, take that iMac! :)

  • QuickDraw 3D FTW !

  • What kind of processor did it have before?

  • @Polygon6789 The processor in this one has not been upgraded from the original - it's a PowerPC 601 running at 60 MHz.

  • @Polygon6789 If you mean what did Apple use before this first-gen PowerPC machine, it was the Motorola 68000 series of processors, the 68040 being the fastest of those

  • As you can change the wallpaper?

  • @sergibegues12 Mac OS 8.0 and later allow you to set any image as the wallpaper, yes.

  • @sergibegues12 seriously?

  • @mickyd110011 Yes!

  • I've always liked the Powermac 6100's startup sound.

A shame that Jim Reekes (the composer of the sound used for all Macs since) and Steve Jobs didn't...

  • Have you tried Classilla as web browser? Lot better than old IE.

  • @ZeroViruzz It's worse, trust me.

  • @HaloSpartanG13 Classilla only ~feels~ worse because it has a whole lot more crap to render on-screen, compared to yester-decade's web. Javascript and Java were a bitch then... now, they (along with Adobe Flash) are the scourge of the internet.

  • @rkmugen Classizila is just a hack of an outdated mozilla version, and the end result looks about the same (Dog Shit)

The best old mac browser is iCab probably, but then again, you can pick up a PC that can use a better browser for $30 at Goodwill.

  • @HaloSpartanG13 I bought a G3 iMac clocking at 600 Mhz for $50. It is an iMac G3 Snow. I had to install tiger from a flash drive. (3 short hours of my life... right)

  • i still have a powermac g5 w/ os 10.5.8 i bought it only a year before they discontinued them

  • @cameraman4brainiac i mean the powerpc

  • .....brings back memories... :D

  • I love when The Pram Battery dies you have turn the computer on then off then on again for the computer to load.

  • @910364 That's right, this one is like that - after doing that it then plays the startup chime and then restarts and chimes again before finally loading up too, when the battery is dead - the video shows it from when it plays the second chime.

  • Wow this Beast running at 60 or 66 MHz ^^. Good old Times

  • @DildoSurround Good old times!? man, I recall rendering web pages on 60 or 66 MHz... it was sheer torture! (and I'm talking plain text, non-css, non-javascript, no-java, straight-up HTML!!)

  • @rkmugen sounds like '94 for me (windows 3.11) and i had a 40 mhz i386 and netscape 1.0 (shudders)

  • @cameraman4brainiac I'll share in your *shudder*.... ugh.. >_< But at least you guys had Doom.

  • @rkmugen true... i am still using a piece of crap today 1.14 ghz celeron on a 1999 motherboard jerry-rigged with a slotket (will i have the powermac g5) and 512 megs of ram (shudders again...)

  • no im not im think i should be getting one on ebay for 59.99

  • i should be getting my first mac computer for chirstmas it will be imac g3

  • @MacHelper44 umm, are you kidding...

  • @MetalShreader iMac G3s are lovely little Macs! :-)

  • do u use this for everyday use?, I know cant connect to ethernet. Unless you upgraded the hell out of it lol, I cant beleive you got a CD-ROM drive in there!

  • @MusicMini11 No way, it's way too slow to use every day! They do have a built-in Ethernet port though not the standard one, you need an adapter to connect it to a standard router - that's how this one is connected to the internet. Not difficult to get a CD drive in them either, the central slot is meant for one and there is a proper bezel for it which I don't have so mine looks a bit untidy.

  • WOW!!!

    VERY COOL MONITOR!

  • Boy that startup sound is sooo nice!

  • i've got a Power Mac 7100/66 and its updated to the G3 version. it still works "Insanely Great!"

  • This is so much faster than my iMac i5 27 inch 6gb ram

  • i bought one just so I can hear the car crashing sound when I press the interrupt key!

  • why the res change to 640 by 480 while booting and returns to 1024 by 768 at the desktop?

  • Damn macs last a long time!

There very impressive for '94 machine!

  • @mememe84

Lemme get this straight... this computer from '94 had 40 mb of RAM but a laptop I have sitting around from '97 by Toshiba has only 16 mb? lol xD

  • @codeythesilent The PowerMac 6100 came from the factory with only 8 MB as standard (this is soldered to the motherboard), it can then be upgraded to a maximum of 136 MB by filling the two RAM slots with a 64 MB stick each (though when the machine came out the maximum was 72 MB, as 32 MB was the biggest stick available at the time).

  • No, not 1 GIGABYTE, 1 TERABYTE. don't get it wrong XD

  • Mac actually looks really nice on an LCD monitor. Very crisp picture!

  • OMG the boot was so laggy!

  • Classilla

  • WOW 1GB HDD its so BIG !

  • Mine died after 16 years of loyal service. I maxed my 6100 with an internal scsi cd-rw, G3/500 card (Sonnet), 136MB ram (8mb onboard + two 64mb simms), a PowerMac 8100 HPV (high performance video) card (the G3 card served as the pass-through), and an 9.1GB internal hdd. Mac OS 9.1, photoshop 6.x, illustrator, iTunes, and this thing was even powerful enough to run some serious emulators (connectix VirtualPC, iNES, SNES9x). I even changed the green LED to a bright-white one from radioshack

  • @rkmugen Wow nice! :-) Would be good to be able to find parts like the G3 and graphics upgrades as I imagine it would perform pretty nicely with those installed - I've been focussing by Mac-maxing efforts on the Beige G3 that you can see in my other video though, love maxed Macs! :-)

  • do you still have the sonnet card i could use one i still have mine and they are working i also have a spare 6100@rkmugen

  • @stpworld Sorry, no... I recycled my 6100 and all components after the mobo got fried during a power surge. Your best bet would be to look on eBay for the NuBUS Crescendo G3 upgrade cards. I just did a quick check and they -are- there. The ones that mention compatibility with the Power Macs 7100 and 8100 are also compatible with the 6100 series (and the 61xx Performa lines). Good luck.

  • Do you know why this Machine does not have its original CD Drive?

Also does the one it have work?

  • Damn I had one of these. Good times. :)

  • This would have been a fast computer in its day, BeigeG3. In comparison, I got my first ever computer in 1996 and it was a PC running Windows 95, 75Mhz Pentium, 1.2Gb HD and 16MB RAM. That was fairly hi-spec then, although faster processors soon made mine out of date. My first upgrade was to 32MB RAM and that was considered super-fast! I suspect the lack of speed on your machine is due to it running OS9.1 - Maybe an older, less demanding OS would be faster - OS 8.5 perchance?

  • Hehe yeh, certainly the first PPCs would have been amazing when launched in 1994 - as Apple said at the time, "The Future Is Here"...

It would have originally shipped with Mac OS 7.1.1, but you'd be crazy to run that buggy piece of 68k-code-in-emulation on it these days...it probably would be a little faster with one of the OS 8 releases but I doubt by a great deal and 9.1 is the most up-to-date (if OS 9 can be considered up-to-date nowadays) that it can take.

  • They really moved ahead a lot in only 4 years or so though, see my other video for the Beige G3 of 1997/98 running OS X Leopard - with the upgrades I've put in that machine is a real screamer! The 6100 of 1994 on the other hand will never offer a massive amount of performance or get anywhere near running Leopard, or any version of OS X, whatever upgrades you manage to cram into it!

  • I remember when back in '95 I bought the PowerMac 6100. It cost me a lot of money. My dad bought for the house at half the price a Windows PC and I remember how sad it was to see the PC running faster than my Mac and being able to use a lot of programs and games that I couldn't with my MAC. I also remember in 96 the Mac Addict magazine the only problem what that the PowerMac 6100 was underpowered to play those demos games...

  • Cool. I love old hardware. Also, I wish Apple continued producing PowerPC-based Macs instead of moving to Intel.

  • @darthirakli I agree, when mac had there own prosesser... That was great. I mean intel is okay... But the "G" processers are great

  • @darthirakli

Why? Intel makes better processors than PPC. Hence the reason why they switched in the first place.

  • @darthirakli it's IBM's fault! they were not moving quick enough for the PPC development!

  • @darthirakli

Why? Intel gave apple more bang for their buck, or to be more precise, more performance per watt. It's all about quality and performance.

  • @darthirakli Why?

  • nice boot up sound

  • Could you make another video demonstrating the "Bad Dog" screensaver for the old macs? I've been looking for it everywhere!

  • Ha! I remember these well! The first time I saw one was after the finished building our school back in '94 each classroom had its own Power Macintosh 6100. We used to oregon trail all the time on these things. Man that old chime brings me back, one of my favs.

  • Nice

  • Hi, I never had a Mac before but just got hold of a Powermac 7300 with OS 8.6.

I am trying to use it for midi music but apparently it needs something called Apple Patchbay?

Does OS 9.1 have such an application on it? Appreciate any info anyone can provide. Best rgds.

  • Damn cool start up chime!

  • BeigeG3, I am sorry for the flamewar. I sincerely apologize.

I am glad to see an old Mac, and the first of the PowerPC Macs, which is now an obsolete generation, still running strong. Keep that old beast going!

  • It's ok, it looks like the other guy was talking nonsense anyway :P

  • Their is a way to get a PowerPC to run 10.6.... u need a X86 emulator for PowerPC they work well and run apps at full speed google it.

  • First and formost, BS. You can't emulate FULL SPEED, it will always have a performance penalty when emulating another CPU. Second, the PowerPC 601 these old Macs have can NOT even run OS X at all, opcodes required just don't exist in these CPUs.

  • No so true my friend. PowerPC can Emulate X86 arch with thats emulator full speed. It uses a code for the CPU not for the OS to adapt by. Meaning its a full hexadecimal Emulator google it.

  • No, you prove it. Emulating requires dynamic recompilation or something similar.

If that was so true, PC emulators on PowerPC Macs wouldn't run like crap.

Think about it, the PowerPC's instruction set is not the same as an X86. Therefor, it's not possible to run other code without converting the code which has overhead.

PROVE it, or don't talk. Saying something like "Google it" is your easy way out, with no leg to even stand on.

  • i love how ur freaking out about this. U can find these emulators almost anywhere... Also calm down it makes u seem like a child

  • You still haven't named one. Googling shows nothing that is full speed.

  • its doesn't exist anymore sadly it was for the first powerPC's

  • Right, that's what I thought, it doesn't exist. More likely, NEVER exist. See, if you knew the name, it can still be looked up.

  • its 8086 something

  • Wow, if it's emulating an 8086, no wonder it can do full speed. The 8086 was the FIRST X86 CPU!! It was only 8MHz and could run Windows 3.0 at best!

Seriously, give it up. Your act has been caught, now your just blowing steam. Don't resort to blowing other stuff.

  • Like i said fool it was along time ago

  • Ha! Pinned you in your own garbage. You said there is a way to get a PowerPC to run 10.6.. No 8086 will pull that off...

There is only one popular PowerPC X86 emulator current that still can't run your claim of 10.6, and that is DOSBox.

I'm officially done here, and I think everyone will agree, I defrauded you.

  • you easily could take X86 for example some 1 can easily code Darwin again for PPC the power of open source. and i find it funny how ur taking victory in just a little debate like a child would

  • lol

  • O and BTW DOS never ran on PowerPC DOSbox is a WIN platform emulator

  • Just give up already! Go to DosBoxes site, they have a PowerPC Mac OS X build you troll!

  • Same with PearPC for Windows and its made for NT and not for DOS you troll. Along with sheep shaver Along with Virtual Box Open source.

  • No, stop your fucking bull shit. Now I'm goddamned pissed.. PearPC was a PowerPC emulator FOR Windows. I never claimed it to be for DOS.

DOSBox is a goddamned emulator for multiple platforms. GOOGLE IT you bastard.

  • you said their was only one for DOS. And ur Wrong and i also love ur freaking out

  • Quote it. QUOTE it. I'm getting sick of assholes like you. You won't quote it because I never said what you claim. My god your an idiot. I hope English isn't your fist language because you suck at keeping comments together.

  • you deleted the comment its easy to notice

  • I did not! It would say "Comment deleted by Author." Like the one I am going to post right now...

  • Comment removed

  • DOSBox is made to emualte DOS not to emulate other platforms DOSbox Runs on other platforms nothing else

  • Ok, look here, and try reading what I said VERY carefully. I said there is only one PowerPC X86 emulator. That means, there is an X86 emulator that runs on PowerPC. Ok, point 1..

DOSBox is a universal binary for the Mac OS X platform, which means it's compiled for both PowerPC and X86.

That's why I said even it couldn't run 10.6, because even though it's an X86 for the PowerPC platform, it can not run Leopard, because like it's name, it runs an emulated DOS environment.

  • DOSBox is a goddamned emulator for multiple platforms then why did u say this you obviously implying that DOSbox is made to emulate multiple platforms

  • I never did. I even cleared that up just to be sure in my previous post.

I am done replying to anything now from you, even if it was a "Sorry for starting a flame war."

Goodnight, and have a nice day tomorrow.

  • same to you 2

  • i have os 9.2, im thinkin about throwing all my cards in and installing osx 10.6 in september

  • A machine like the 6100 can't run 10.0, let alone 10.6 (sadly 10.6 is the first version of the Mac OS to be Intel-only)

  • my computer isnt a 6100, its a power PC iBook, but no 10.6 :( i guess il have to save up and get a new intel Mac

  • lol I also have Mac OS 9.1

  • Did you try out Classilla ? It's probably the best OS 9 browser

  • Aww this back in the days when Macs still worked..

  • And I forgot -- I personally consider installing OS 9 on these machines an epic error.

  • I tend to always install the most up-to-date OS and software that a machine can handle - in the case of the pre-G3 Power Macs, that is Mac OS 9.1 so that's what the PM6100 gets!

  • That's not about updating and other things -- it's speed. I don't want to start doing bad things there, but it's all about speed!

  • Slow camera, though.

  • its fast xD xD like an old symbian phone :D

  • :D lol

  • MAC FTW!

  • Which version of after dark do you have on this mac?

    Thanks for uploading.

  • The last version that was released, I think it's version 4 - there is a patch that you can get to make it run on OS 9.1, as otherwise it will only run on older versions of Mac OS.

  • Um actually the first Power Mac was 4400. I want a G3 all in one power mac with mac os x jaguar (10.2)

  • No, the 4400 was released in 1996 whereas the 6100 came out in 1994 as part of the first generation of Power Macs - download MacTracker, this contains detailed specs and information on every Mac ever made. If you had a G3 you'd want to run at least 10.4 Tiger by the way, 10.2 Jaguar is very old and out-of-date nowadays.

  • Ive had mactracker long before i posted that comment

  • Might be worth checking it then...4400 clearly says released November 1996, while the 6100 says released March 1994.

The Macs under Power Macintosh are ordered by the model number which is why 4400 is the first in the list ie 4400 is a lower number than 6100, not by release date. The 6100, 7100 and 8100 were the first generation of PowerPC Macs in 1994.

  • I wants! :)

  • nice... i remember ny dad using one if these.. we had no games then. my entertainment then was staring at after dark screensaves... it was magical for me then.!

    mac FTW!!

  • I miss my 5200. That's what this computer reminded me of. I'm thinking about getting a 6100/60 off of eBay for real cheap.

  • The 6100 is very slow to be honest, if you want a cheap classic Mac something like a G3 is probably the best, machines like the Beige G3 (see my other video) or iMac G3 can also be had for free or very cheap these days and run Mac OS 9 much faster than the 6100 or similar, as well as being more than capable of OS X too. Even Power Mac G4s are very cheap now (I got one from Freecycle last year) and very fast even with Leopard. The 6100 is cool in that it is one of the very first PowerPCs though.

  • It's obvious that the 6100 is slow with OS 9, because my 5200 ran the same thing before it was no more. I want one because it's a certain monument of Mac--it's the first PowerPC Mac ever. Plus, I already have two iMacs in the basement collecting dust, and I just sold my G3 B&W.

  • Ah ok then, if you've already got some G3s! You should get them out though, I love the iMac G3! :P (wouldn't mind getting one some day to go with my Beige) Yep, the 6100 won't win any performance competitions but is still the first PPC :-) Wish I had the front panel for mine, would look quite a nice little machine with it!

  • Yep, one of the indigo iMacs was my first G3 ever, and used to be my main computer until I replaced it with a G4 Sawtooth back in 2005. Now I still have it as a server, and an Early 2004 12-inch iBook G4, which I'm currently selling. I'm gonna miss it! ;)

  • Nice collection of Macs you've got there! :-) Do you use a Mac as your main machine too, out of interest?

  • The whole family used nothing but Macs, ever since they've been around. We've only been through about three or four PCs. Surprisingly, we have at least 13 Macs working or just sitting around (15 if the Cube and 5200 weren't in pieces). Surprised? LOL

  • Cool, got a fair few Macs here too but only older ones (though I've installed on my C2D PC, and it runs very sweetly!) - Digital Audio G4 (awesome machine, not even officially supported for Leopard but still runs it beautifully) is the newest one. Love the Cube by the way, get it put back together! :P

  • If You Wanna Run Mac OS X Upgrade The Processor To A G4

  • You can't run OS X on the 6100 even if you put a G3 or G4 card in, it is too old. Some of the later pre-G3 Macs can run OS X up to 10.2 if you use XPostFacto to install it, and 10.3/10.4 with a G3 card or 10.5 with a G4, but not the 6100.

  • OMG how I miss that computer... What a great time...

  • Great vid.

I am currently doing a classic project where I am creating an old Beige mac system.

I am currently after either a 9600/350Mhz, 8600/300Mhz or if I am lucky to find a nice WGS 9650/350Mhz.

I had a Quadra 700 when I was 7 and later on a Power Mac 8500/150Mhz, back then I always wondered what the top of the line 9600/8600's were like.

I will probably post a vid when the project is finished, good times.

  • Sounds cool, I like the 9600s too, awesome case like the Beige G3's (see my other video) but bigger! The 9600 can also run Leopard if you have a G4 card installed.

Lucky for having a Quadra when you were 7 though, I was about 11 before getting my first computer and it was just a Windows 95 P1 PC, no Macs for me until being given some old ones in the last couple of years!

  • Where in the world did you ever find a slot loading SCSI CD-ROM drive? And replace the front piece, looks like crap with out it.

Sad that my 6100/66 is now my primary mac since my 9600/350 bit the dust.

  • Yeh, just got the drive in a set of old bit from Freecycle. I got the machine without a front bezel, yeh, I know it's kinda ugly without it but it's a hard piece to find :-(

Shame about your 9600, they are a very cool machine! You should pick up a G3 or G4, they can be had for nothing these days and are still awesome Leopard (if G4) machines.

  • I used to have a MAC like this. I now wished I hadn't parted with it when I needed space in my bedroom.

  • AfterDark! ... nice.

  • That's a great old Mac! What are you using for a monitor? One of the first Apple LCD displays?

  • Yep, the original LCD Studio Display (15"), a snip at just US$2,000 in 1998 ;-) I didn't get it new though, was given a couple about a year ago - the other one is in the video of the Beige G3.

  • wtf do you have yur WII inside yur mac??XD

  • its a cd drive

  • I recommend using Netscape 7 for browsing on Mac OS 8 and 9, it works best with all the websites I go to on my iMac G3. Anyway, this is a really good demo of a older PowerPC Mac.

  • Thanks! :-) Yeh, it's kinda slow for web browsing, I know it looks like a dial-up connection in this video but it's in fact a 10 Mbps cable connection, this old Mac sure wasn't designed for browsing the current Apple homepage!
