sorry folks. this was my first road trip to see the dead. saw them on the 26th, then on the 27th, that was it. i was IN. ALL THE WAY. one of the best weekends i ever had. i have soundboard tapes on cassette tape. they died years and years ago, but i still kept them. my favorite show. ever. second would be the tornado show from the meadowlands in july, 1990. how can i get my hands on a good clean copy of this show?
I thought that 1985 was a great year for the Dead and a great year on tour for me. I just wish that I was smart enough to bring along my Beta cam and deck...became very motivated upon seeing a video from Manor Downs (8/31/85). I can still remember the moment when I began wondering WHERE that video came from and just WHO made it. What a great idea. Then it occured to me: it was simply, purely someone like me.
The Best Time Period for the Grateful Dead was 1965 - 1995.. Everyone has their own favorite time within that, correct? There were good nights and bad nights just about every year. Some mmore than others. Enjoy that we all experienced some of the best live music that will ever be played! :) Hands Down. When they were on, it was magical, regardless of what year! This was certainly an on night!
@brigcutter - that sounds great - but there were eras where they were sharper and crisper than others - Yes it was ALL good but for my money they were the best in 89-90 - IMO - That was the best incarnation of the grateful dead
They start with chaos..........give it order .........do a Miles Davis song, "So What", then fall into Sugar Magnolia.........there was nothing like them when they were "on it"...
Wow! That's a good one! Hampton '86 was also a great show...argueably the best I've seen in over 100 shows...good times. CannibusKing, you're full of shit. The very best guitar virtuosos were clean (e.g., Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, etc...). It's 2010, time to pull your head out of your ass.
@sstikkmann you need to stfu frank zappa was not clean my friends dad went to high school with him so pull your head out of yours befor you go around talking! go licen to some tool-drugs and stfu
the whole point is that jerry sounded better clean and the most successful musicians are clean... just a fact, but you're an arrogant stoner trying to justify your own addiction, correct?...and everyone knows frank was clean when he made over 60 albums, although he acknowledged coffee and cigarette abuse... who cares if your friend's dad claims he did drugs in high school...you lack credibility... your sources are incorrect and you're a fuckin' moron... go pull another bong hit
...and i apologize for being so harsh on a dead thread...it's just that i will not tolerate anyone spreading false information - lies and rumors - about late great artists... Mr420people, i suggest you check your sources before spreading rumors
It's hard to feel the energy at this show from this video. I was there. It was Hampton. The place was NUTS ! Everyone danced and the place shook. I remember this night and the pure joy I felt. I was dancing like a crazy deadhead and living COMPLETELY in the moment.
This was the best show I attended ('85-'95). Never thought I'd see any of it on video. Thank you for sharing, STL.
It is a shame that WMG has chosed to disrupt the continuity of viewing this second set because it was epic and ABSOLUTELY SHREDDED! The Scarlet>Fire after this was particularly killer.

You are so much more astute than I. It was on the album Kinda Blue. I've only listened to it about 1000 times. Should know but thanks. Great to hear Jer give a taste of it. So cool.

MY FAVORITE run from the Dead EVER and my favorite SHOW EVER>Cmon thre snd set is posibbly the best palyed music by the band EVER!!!The energy in the building CAN NOTbe topedd EVeR!!!
Ok, this is my last comment on this song and the group, but in my opinion, Bob Weir, was a really humble guy, considering, that Jerry is kind of the "mainstay" of the Dead, and also Phil Lesh, (great bass player) and Bill Krutzman, terriffic drummer. I love em all, but I just want to say, take your hats off to the whole band, not just Jerry. Marc.
Yes, Bob is much underrated. I don't think anyone will debate that point. A great guitarist in his own right (and what a f*cking singer!) who subsumed himself to the collective.
This is a song Bob Weir co-wrote with some other guys. I think it's one of his "defining" songs, in terms of how I feel about him. To me it's all Bob Weir, but Jerry plays good guitar to back this song up. Go get em Bobby!!!! on this one. Marc.
Of course the original recording had Jerry on pedal steel, (which is what I play and love,), but they still do a good job without the steel on this. What a great song, in my opinion, one of Bob's defining songs. Great song about love, and excitement, and fun with his main flame who is really really exciting. Marc. .
In May 1970 I saw Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, and Butch Trucks jam with Jerry, Rat Dog, and the Dead's drummer at the old Atlanta Sports Arena. That was loud as they ever were. Marshall Super Lead 100 amps wide open and the Dead with all of those huge solid oak PA cabinets loaded with JBL-120's. The 80's they were high volumn as well. Then sometime in the 90's sound engineers got on this low volumn stage presence kick which is even worse now. Idiot sound engineers sometimes ruin good live rock.
They were definitely at their best in the 70s, with the exception of 75. After the got more psychedelic with their style their progress continued to increase up until Jerry's coma. Need i remind you that he had to relearn how to play guitar. And any 1970s show is better the this show.
and by the way, ive never done any drugs like heroin. but all the best guitarist of his time did drugs like that. and i believe that some drugs.. really help you put passion into playing. like LSD for instance.
This was one of the top 5 performances of the 1980's, PERIOD!!! You had to be there and if you weren't, then you have NO CLUE!!! The late 1970's were the FLATTEST, MOST BORING SOUNDING shows that the Dead ever played.....PLEASE enlighten us on which late 70's shows are better, and if you even suggest 5-8-77(the single most overrated show of their career) I will laugh at you really hard, even harder than I am now!!
Firstly, i didnt say that this wasnt the best of the 1980s. You are a ruthless idiot if you dont know that they were better in the late 60s. I am done arguing, obviously I cannot get my point across with you people.
This was quite possibly the best show of the 80's without a doubt, I am not going to debate that. But with all due respect 77 was one of the great years for the Grateful Dead. There are so many shows from that year that could be mentioned as some of the best they ever did. Personally, I am a fan of 1970. But the good thing is you can find a good show from almost any year that these guys were around. The important thing is to find and listen.
I love it when "hippies" show their true colors. You sound quite honestly like an angry, miserable, snob. I have loved the music of the Dead the majority of my life, I have always truly despised the hardcore Deadheads. I always found that the"Loony" part of the fans really made the experience mostly about them self. The self focus, vanity, and conceit I saw in much of the Deadhead culture was in stark contrast to the music. It's just good music , stop being such a prick please.
@wutehvah What comment were you responding to...? You seem to be the only angry responder here...We all are so grateful for the magic whenever and wherever we could get it!
@SpottheLooney I'm with you Spotthelooney !!! These are the years Jerry stayed away from the junk. And the last half of the 80's was one of the high points of their career. And as a musician myself the most productive part of my live has been since I quit getting high. And one more thing I was there !! This was my first "Scarlet>Fire" and god do I miss them !!!!!
@SpottheLooney hey dude i understand u actually saw it and u have ur opinion but so does everyone and how can u call any of the grateful dead overrated, i love everything that band produced. I happen 2 love their late 70's stuff especially 4-27-77 its one of my favorite shows 2 watch when im blazed of my ass or just in the mood 2 listen 2 some jammin. just thought i should let u know peace out
@SpottheLooney everyone is entitled to their own opinion there scooby doo..i saw them @ raceway park in 77...they tore the place apart!! towards the end of the 80's it seemed jerry was getting old & the dope wasn't helping much..say what you like i've seen them lots also & this is my humble opinion....enjoy yours.....
Frank Zappa was one of the great guitarist ever and he never did drugs. When Jerry was smoking pot and dropping LSD he was fine and I do believe it helped him create great music. But when he turned to heroin music became his 2nd love, and he was never the same. If only he would have stayed away from that crap, and gotten himself sober, or just stuck with the pychedelics, he might still be alive and making great music. Heroin sucks.
well if frank zappa never did drugs then why was he a pro drug/marijuana activist? i think he did drugs. and i agree with the rest, heroin is a horrible drug that has ruined many peoples life's.
I would suggest you do some reading and research on Zappa. Zappa did not do drugs or drink. As far as being a "drug/marijuana activist," I never saw or read any statements from him condoning or condemning the use of drugs, even though his kids have often said that he used to ridicule people who were wasted or under the influence and he encouraged them not to use drugs. Cigarettes were Zappa's drug, and in the end cancer killed him. That's another story. It is well known Zappa did not do drugs.
Not so true he began using heroin in the 70's actually just not as much. Mountain girl did an interview and said when jerry was on heroin he was a different man
@TheCannabisKing Dude! you know what it is all about! he was the best! And I only tried heroin once and hated it, I love these guys they are my life and veins
@RattleheadRYGDH- well poor judgement is the story of your life isn't it, champ, explains how your mother got shit faced and fucked that guy named "skinny" at pee poe's bar n' grill that one night, and it was a long night, CHAMP, one long night... i went HAM on that bitch.
@TheCannabisKing haha whats wrong with a little bit of bud? get the fuck off this video if you never have done enhancing drugs. haha cannibisking im with you man
are you kdding? This is his prime he starting going down hill in the in 84 -85 then got better in 87 and then was amazing to 88-89-90 then got worse with his addiction in 91 to 95 when he died
i am sorry man, you must be in deep denial, id have to say his best was in the late 60s and all of the 70s. now i dont know about you, but im a musicianm one whos been highly influenced by jerry. and i can hear some missed notes in the solos, definitely not as good as his early years. and you can tell he has his guitar volume lower then it should be. so no, i am not kidding. no disrespect to jerry, but you must be ignorant not to see that this is NOT his best..
ITo me that was the most energy of all the decades they played together. And he turned his guitar down in the 90's not the 80's, I've been to every single Spectrum show from 1980 to the last one in 1995, and I can tell you that starting in 90's when he was fading his volume was lowered. I don't mean this is his best but come on.. Anything beats the 90's my favorite jerry year was 77 but my favorite band year had to be 1988-1989.
oh yeah, the 90s were not their best, i was just trying to say that after his coma and touring and all that he lost some of his amazing improv ability. Basically his career and most of his life WAS the Grateful Dead. And fucking "spotthelooney" is just trying to piss people off.
Yes, you are right, it is all opinion when it comes to the Grateful Dead and what is considered their peak years. As I stated in my earlier comments, every era has something sweet if you look for it. I saw many shows in the 80's, and the years 87-90 were some of the best times of my life. But I still think 1970 is their best year, just my opinion. Check out 2/12-13-14/70 and 5/2/70 just to start. Man those were some great shows! But this Hampton show was one of the best shows of the 80's.
Yea, I do like the 80's but I believe in the 80's is when they started to acieve there own sound - Some of the 70's stuff sounds to influenced by 60's bands, Like When pigpen tried playing organ and was just holding chords the whole time? you know what I mean - but nevertheless The dead were always good in my eyes
@TheCannabisKing lol!!! name one true deadhead who hasnt been "highly influenced" by Garcia??????? you mustve skipped the 80s, Garcia tore it up, JGB was epic. This show…..So what->sugar mags_>scarlett_>fire->estimated_>eyes….please, get real. btw, Garcia was nvr really clean. nor was he on time with the drums/bass which is what made this band so amazing. zappa said that it wasnt possible to be a decent musician unless yoiu kept perfect time….bullshit. 87-90, every show blew the roof off.
This video was done on a Panasonic PV-100, of all things, into a JVC S20U portable. The original audio was the Healy FM out of an Aiwa walkman. 12 hour drive. I guess it was worth it. 3/26 and 3/28 also great.
So What is a Miles Davis song. this has the first few licks as an intro to sugar mags. Jerry actually did a bunch of acoustic jazz sessions that were compiled and posthumously released as a disc, which have a few versions of it. Get it, it's great stuff.
did the band formally call that teaser in the beginning "so what";been listening to the DEAD since 1991; i know quite a few useless trinkets about GD>>>>>>i've heard this show before and i was always wondering what they were doing there before Sugarmag..... and i believe i've only heard the 1st set to this...when was SSDD performed?..... too lazy to look it up....."So what"--- i'll take a guess at the SSDD part.......sailor>saint>NFA>GDTRFB>NFA>SSDD>a dylan song(queen jane?)
@wutehvah- your arguing with yourself. i think you had to many puffs on the magic dragon

No CannabisKing, it is YOU that is crazy!!!
SpottheLooney 2 years ago
Firstly, i didnt say that this wasnt the best of the 1980s. You are a ruthless idiot if you dont know that they were better in the late 60s. I am done arguing, obviously I cannot get my point across with you people.
TheCannabisKing 2 years ago

Heroin sucks.
blewis2460 2 years ago
well if frank zappa never did drugs then why was he a pro drug/marijuana activist? i think he did drugs. and i agree with the rest, heroin is a horrible drug that has ruined many peoples life's.
TheCannabisKing 2 years ago
I would suggest you do some reading and research on Zappa. Zappa did not do drugs or drink. As far as being a "drug/marijuana activist," I never saw or read any statements from him condoning or condemning the use of drugs, even though his kids have often said that he used to ridicule people who were wasted or under the influence and he encouraged them not to use drugs. Cigarettes were Zappa's drug, and in the end cancer killed him. That's another story. It is well known Zappa did not do drugs.
blewis2460 2 years ago
Not so true he began using heroin in the 70's actually just not as much. Mountain girl did an interview and said when jerry was on heroin he was a different man
Gr4tefuldead 2 years ago
@TheCannabisKing Dude! you know what it is all about! he was the best! And I only tried heroin once and hated it, I love these guys they are my life and veins

its hard to see jerry in such a poor condition, even though hes barely coherent, he can still play better then most.
TheCannabisKing 2 years ago
are you kdding? This is his prime he starting going down hill in the in 84 -85 then got better in 87 and then was amazing to 88-89-90 then got worse with his addiction in 91 to 95 when he died
Gr4tefuldead 2 years ago
i am sorry man, you must be in deep denial, id have to say his best was in the late 60s and all of the 70s. now i dont know about you, but im a musicianm one whos been highly influenced by jerry. and i can hear some missed notes in the solos, definitely not as good as his early years. and you can tell he has his guitar volume lower then it should be. so no, i am not kidding. no disrespect to jerry, but you must be ignorant not to see that this is NOT his best..
TheCannabisKing 2 years ago
ITo me that was the most energy of all the decades they played together. And he turned his guitar down in the 90's not the 80's, I've been to every single Spectrum show from 1980 to the last one in 1995, and I can tell you that starting in 90's when he was fading his volume was lowered. I don't mean this is his best but come on.. Anything beats the 90's my favorite jerry year was 77 but my favorite band year had to be 1988-1989.
Gr4tefuldead 2 years ago
oh yeah, the 90s were not their best, i was just trying to say that after his coma and touring and all that he lost some of his amazing improv ability. Basically his career and most of his life WAS the Grateful Dead. And fucking "spotthelooney" is just trying to piss people off.
TheCannabisKing 2 years ago
Yea well it's all opinion but I grew up during the 80's shows first one was the spectrum so I guess that's what I grew up with so it's my favorite.
Also The morning dews at the spectrum beat any 70's show hands down they were just historical!
Gr4tefuldead 2 years ago
Yes, you are right, it is all opinion when it comes to the Grateful Dead and what is considered their peak years. As I stated in my earlier comments, every era has something sweet if you look for it. I saw many shows in the 80's, and the years 87-90 were some of the best times of my life. But I still think 1970 is their best year, just my opinion. Check out 2/12-13-14/70 and 5/2/70 just to start. Man those were some great shows! But this Hampton show was one of the best shows of the 80's.
blewis2460 2 years ago
Yea, I do like the 80's but I believe in the 80's is when they started to acieve there own sound - Some of the 70's stuff sounds to influenced by 60's bands, Like When pigpen tried playing organ and was just holding chords the whole time? you know what I mean - but nevertheless The dead were always good in my eyes
Gr4tefuldead 2 years ago

Dloomis494 3 years ago
So What is a Miles Davis song. this has the first few licks as an intro to sugar mags. Jerry actually did a bunch of acoustic jazz sessions that were compiled and posthumously released as a disc, which have a few versions of it. Get it, it's great stuff.
imakingbee 3 years ago 2
what is it called? did he play more than 1 instrument?what songs are on it? W/Branford?
Branford really makes his presence known& seems to mesh with Jerry's pluckin' style
on 9/10/91-----a show worth listening to frequently! Peace

did the band formally call that teaser in the beginning "so what";been listening to the DEAD since 1991; i know quite a few useless trinkets about GD>>>>>>i've heard this show before and i was always wondering what they were doing there before Sugarmag..... and i believe i've only heard the 1st set to this...when was SSDD performed?..... too lazy to look it up....."So what"--- i'll take a guess at the SSDD part.......sailor>saint>NFA>GDTRFB>NFA>SSDD>a dylan song(queen jane?)
