let me start by saying that i have listened to tori since almost the beginning of her career and that i never let anyone bother me about it. She is the best at what she does, period! Most amazing performer ive ever seen and i am a Metallica/ Megadeth type of guy. Her talent blows my mind and her voice is that of an angel. Awesome video for my favorite song of all time!!
Tori has a couple of songs that remind me of winter. If you could put the mood of the winter months into music, she did it. Then a couple of years ago she came out with " Midwinter Graces." I thought , cool she came out with a whole album like this. It sucked, it was just a bunch of altered Christmas carols. Like a Jazzy version of Jingle Bells, and crap like that.

@triplettam I believe it is only out of tune in the western tuning context. I am not sure that the instrument being played here is a piano. Whatever it is, it belive it tuned in some varied tuning system involving microtones, something more common in eastern music. I agree that it brilliant. i just discovered this song. It is beautiful.
@doctortabby its described as a "treated piano" on the sleeve notes :-) it sounds like theres some sort of stuff jammed in the strings or like the dampming has been altered and its been knocked out of tune.Or it might just be a knackered old paino they had lying about,there sone at my rehearsal studio thats pretty whacky too

I think what this song is trying to convey is how a child's innocence is lost from incest. Unfortunately millions of children in this country have suffered from the hands who supposebly love them. We need to bring awareness to this problem and protect our children in this country.
When Tori was interviewed by the Baltimore Sun (American newspaper) in 1994, she explained that this song is meant to convey the dissolution of a relationship she had with a woman--a friendship that dissolved somehow. She described it as a "betrayal" of each other. I don't fully understand what she meant by that, but it seemed to be a general feeling about relationships between women--how complicated and hurtful we can be to one another.
@lucybells0 Bells For Her is about Beenie, who was in an abusive relationship with a man at the time of Tori's writing UTP. Tori tried to get Beenie to see that, but that backfired and so they had a falling out. When you think about abusive relationships, you often see women sticking up for the abusive men. We can't recognise them. Hence "you have her face and her eyes, but you are not her."

Tori has native american heritage which is deeply rooted into her being. I have Cherokee heritage and understand her perceptions and sensitivity to virtually everything. As I get older, it becomes even more evident.

@TTLYPerfect there's a lot of truth in that. so what if you got teased for liking tori amos anyway? wouldn't bother me. wouldn't recommend broadcasting it to violent bullies unless they are frightened of you but it's just not helpful to be ashamed of what you like and why should you be if it hurts no-one? all the strongest people and biggest players i know will readily admit to things that would mortify most and don't get teased much about these things, because it doesn't bother them...

Haunting effect? I really like this song, as well as those by Enigma , depeche mode, and Amarantine. There's more... It's one of my favs too. The video is good- wait, no it's not "good", it's great.

In an interview she says this song's about a woman who is with a man who treats her like shit.
"Now she seems to be sand under his shoes."
For me this has the vibe of a world's end. Someone used this song cleverly in a video explaining the world coming to an end thru an asteroid cloud. Very emotional.

Tori has native american heritage which is deeply rooted into her being. I have Cherokee heritage and understand her perceptions and sensitivity to virtually everything. As I get older, it becomes even more evident.

but she stopped talking to me, blocked me out entirely, along with a lot of things from her past. and there's nothing i can really do about it...

i believe this song is about her friend that was molested by a man in her family. I know one of her songs is about that. I'm not sure which one. I read it in one of her many books. She has another song about her miscarriage . Very sad songs most of them are.
