  • this is the first power ballad

  • I didn't like anything else the Carpenters did but this one is truly magnificent: her voice is so mellow in contrast to the amazing rock guitar rifts - who was he by the way? Still makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.

  • This is just horrible, not the real version

  • As it is said of John Lennon with the Beatles, Richard was the 'egghead' (iyw) for the Carpenters.

  • NOTE TO ALL: This is NOT the real version. This is the karaoke version with crappy MIDI instruments on the left side.

  • It is curious, and unexpected; but Karen could have been singing here of her own life... A beautiful, somber, and melancholic, song.

  • never bought any of their records but these guys are ok..their songs have melody..don't know why so many people disrespect them..theres a lot worse music then this..

  • Karen had a very loving family. She got hung up on being thin.....how sad is that to believe she needed to be? Died of heart failure from starving herself at the age of 32 I think.

  • @CrickfootGattie You may want to rethink that. Read "Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter."

  • song full of love, too bad for the goodbye . Love you Karen, you gave without taking. I would have given you my all, if you'd asked :-)

  • honesty and truth versus the stench of lies and greed wins hands down every time..

  • The great late Tony Peluso on guitar actually made this track what it is today a classic.....Most tracks in those days ended by fade out

  • @DJTanz1 No, I'd say it was Karen's voice that made it a classic

  • I hate it when they fade out the guitar solo. This was one of the best of all time.

  • RAISES HAIRS ON MY ARMS, BACK OF MY NECK ETC. kAREN HAD WHAT WAS PROBABLY THE GREATEST FEMALE VOICE OF THE 20TH CENTURY!!

  • We miss you Karen,,,this song in your voice makes me cry,,,: (

  • Miss her so much...glad for Christmastime for her voice on the radio again...

  • Pure magic from an angel.

  • was Karen always alone? Today you would never hear this kind of honesty in a song.

  • brilliant, searing.

  • niemand kon begrijpen dat karen zo ziek was en tot het laats bleef volharden

zij was een van de beste

  • The voice that's not from this world...it's very soothing..

  • @Mrsomewhatevil And she was also beautiful!

  • My sister really liked the carpenters, but i was a bit of a rock dude...however this song completely blows me away,KC's singing as well as that guitar solo...well it's right up there!

  • "No one ever card if I should live or die". How untrue Karen. I love you still and the memories of my youth that your sweet voice brings to my mind. My heart skips a beat whenever I hear you, your brother playing piano/singning and all those beautiful harmonies. Always and forever - Jimmy.

  • Awesome guitar melody!

  • Her voice is magical :>)

  • You watch the American Music Awards, The Grammy's...there is nothing like this pure music, not lip synced, just pure put together great sound...delivered....

  • Classic guitar riff and I'd love to get my hands on an old acrylite drum kit again!

  • EVIDENCE

  • 55 people disliked this because they didn't like it!

  • Excellent - the most famous guitar solo riff in the world played by the great Tony Peluso. Listen well, you'll never hear better!

  • just love this song

  • Tony pioneered the power ballad genre with that solo.

  • The oboe at the beginning just ruins it. It should have been a kazoo.

  • The genesis for this song was almost on a whim. Richard was watching a movie where an important song "Goodbye to Love" was talked about (as part of the plot), but was never actually sung (in the movie)... Richard liked the title so much he decided to write the song!

  • The guitar solo is as necessary for the song as Karen's voice. One is sad but hopeful, the other is angry and beautiful.

  • I like guitar solo!

  • omg so awsoemsoemsoemosemomeoeme

  • I love the music, the lyrics, her voice and the electric guitar!!!...It is so bad that she is no longer around!!!

  • It is ironic, but I think this is the Carpenter's best song. Ironic because most of their songs were about, expressive of, or wanting... of love.

  • That electric guitar is so out of place on this song, almost ruins it

  • @magicsteviej I hate the electric guitar.Maybe they could re-master it and put lush strings in instead.Super song.

  • Hasn't been a voice like her's since. We miss you very much Karen.

  • Rich & sweet.... finely crafted song....My favorite guitar lead of all times.. including Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Van Halen and all others... I think it was Richard Carpenter on lead....?.... Happy Birthday Richard Carpenter !! Oct.15th. Today.

  • @RegisPPalmer That was an excellent guitar riff by the late Tony Peluso. it's been said that Richard and Karen both loved his playing and went out of their way to hire him.

  • The story of my life, I have finally given up. I do love the song, and The Carpenters

  • AH.......... :)))))

  • This is about the only time you will see them singing this song....I mean on video...there is no other I can find....it is amazing. I wish Richard would come out and do some stuff now, and try to do some things with other artists...but I know he has a big family nowl

  • @calilammy You can find it in "Live in London" (the real version, not this karaoke MIDI one) and "Live at the Budokan 1974" along with their 1976 "First Television Special."

  • Goodbye Karen...your voice

  • Great song from a wonderful lady. How could anyone think that she was fat?

  • My left ear feels sad and almost abandoned by her.

  • she looks very unhealthy in this video - it breaks my heart :(

it's always the geniuses who are tortured souls.

love you Karen, in 2011 <3

  • Evidence!

  • Wow. My ex-girlfriend might as well be singing this. No tears, though!

  • Wow. My ex-girlfriend might as well be singing this. No tears, though!

  • There are only two singers in the past 50 years that I would have described as "having the voice of an angel". They were Karen Carpenter and Carl Wilson. RIP.

  • Karen , Richard and Tony ! 3 of the greatest musicians ever !!! Great music that will live....forever !!!

  • Since I was 12 years old(1974), I have been Big fun of Tony!! Almost 40years!

To me he is the No.1 guitalist. I love his everything!

  • WHAT A VOICE,SUCH A SHAME ABOUT HER PERSONAL LIFE.

  • a great fan since 1970 ... man was she some kind of drummer! RIP Karen - you are loved, even now. What a voice!

  • ドラマーは当時西海岸でNO1スタジオミュージシャンのハル ブレインです!!スティーブガッドが世界で一番レコーディングの数が多いと本に書いてあったが、時代的に考えるとハルブレインの方が多いかもです!!

  • Absolutely brilliant talented woman....

  • Thank you, Aaron Cohen for sharing this on Twitter.

  • Her voice was music. It was one with all of the instruments. Doubt there will be another like it again.

  • My favorite too! Gotta love Tony's guitar sliding and shocking the audience. They took a chance and made a beautiful song! Tony was so proud of the invite to help with the song. May never hear a song like this again, with full orchestra! Genius Richard!!!

  • she could sing, he could play guitar, my favorite carpenters track

  • You are always there and I never remember you alive. I'm 37 and always come back to listen to your beautiful voice. It's unique. I love it. :o)

  • I have always Loved the carpenters music, ever since i was a child.

The words are filled with emotion!

  • her voice is so out of this world..it could turn a knock knock joke sound like Sylvia Plath poem hahah

  • did you know that some of the carpenters fans sent hate mail to them becuz of the fuzzy rockin out guitar solo

  • My theme song.

I'm sixteen and I love the Carpenters. :) I've stolen my Dad's CD out of my sister's CD case to listen to it at night.

  • loneliness and empty days will be my only friend.

  • pure love talent beauty i miss u karen we all do the style of music unprecidented this song was wrote by her brother there was a movie goodbye to love u never here the song in the old movie but the carpenters made a awesome song as usual ten stars love u karen

  • @tamerswan Yea...."Close to You" is probably my fav Carpenters song....when it came out I was in elementary school...2nd or 3rd grade and I had just started liking girls (I was getting over the "cootie" phase LOL) and there was this girl I really liked but she already had a boyfriend...he was in our same grade but was a couple of years older and a little bigger than me due to the fact he had failed the 1st grade twice..he was also one of the bullies so I didn't stand a chance...LOL! That's life!

  • Fab guitar solo work by Tony Peluso - not the prettiest guy on the stage, but one mean picker. Sadly he died in 2010 aged 60

  • to all those who had fallen in the name of FUCKING LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Is this a mime??

  • 54 people experienced no love in their life! Ever!!!

  • On this day one year ago, we lost the very talented and magical Tony Peluso...a lovely human being, a master musician and producer and a true friend. I lift my glass to you, Tone Bone...you were the best! Un bacio!

  • @cuhri That was a great guitar solo. Very memorable.

  • @Bluesdirections I remember the first time Tony had shown me this video and I noticed that he was biting his lip while he was playing the solo. He said, "Yeah, that's because I was so into it!" And that was Tony...music was everything to him.

  • @cuhri So, like you knew Tony ??

  • @mrstevehartman He was one of my best friends. Just a great guy.

  • Awesome Carpenters song, cheezy karaoke-style lyrics! :/

  • The guitar solo to beat them all!! and superb lyrics! What a great loss to music was Karin!!

  • One of the most recognized guitar solos in music....great song!!

  • My wonderful wife introduced me to Karen's wonderful voice. I love them both, so much!

  • @777butch777 Best of both worlds.

  • dalmatix.....volim te....jos uvek...ne mogu te zaboraviti...

  • very sad :(

  • After listening to this song over and over again. Still brings many sad and wonderful memories in my life and yet still brings that lump too my throat. Excellent song, excellent words. Than you Carpenters.

  • Man i dig that hard rock song.this is the carpenters one and only heavy metal song.

  • Dearest Karen: We miss you so much! You had a voice of an angel, and you made every song you sung, precious--because you were so precious! And you were so beautiful--everyone saw it, except you! Anyway, I love the guitar solo, and this is my favorite Carpenters song to "Crank Up"-lol! With love, BobbyK

  • @bobby7771117 You are so right on everything you said!!

  • The memories are vivid. This song is powerful.

  • @fastwalker100 YOU ARE SOOOOO RIGHT... MAGIC! She DID say Goodbye to Love. What a great loss. What ever happened to Richard??

  • I said goodbye to love years ago. I'll go on as best I can

  • kinda soothing..... infinite likes....

  • The melancholy in this almost predicts what is to come I've always thought. I did see them live in 74 - wow. They were fantastic!!!

  • she so sweet too bad she die her music live on

  • Who the hell keeps putting these stupid karaoke lyrics on these? Half of them are not even the right fucking lyrics

  • I remember thinking how most of her songs, except We've Only Just Begun, were primarily about being hurt, lonely or sad. When I see this video, you can see where the anorexia is starting to affect her greatly, and this song was back in 1973, I think....Poor woman. she truly was singing from her sad heart.

  • @TypesALot

Yes, so true, so bittersweet....how can words describe? There is a void unlike any other since this beautiful person left us...

  • caaaalling occupants, of interplanetary craaaaaaft.. :(

  • love this video by karen Carpenters sweet vice

  • @monahgrethe Yeah really. I remember the first time I heard this and was going??? Who the hell IS that??? VERY catchy riff

  • Such a sad song...My heart just breaks thinking she may have really felt this way...

  • I miss both Karen and Tony!!

  • The guitarist is Tony Peluso, passed away June 5th 2010. Great solo in this song.

  • The 2000th comment :x

  • Ironic that the best guitar solo ever is on a carpenter's record

  • I had always felt a connection to Karen and not just through her songs.I was only 14yo yet wept when I found out how grave her condition actually was. The day she passed I could feel an emptiness surrounding me but being a young boy with these kind of feeling was strange, so I kept it to myself. It wasn't until recently that I found out the she was born on the same day as me, March 2. She was too bright and too young to pass when she did. A part of me says she should still be with us today.

  • doesn't she need to breath when she sings?

  • the lyrics is a little bit pessimistic, isn't it?

  • lovin peluso in this vid. . classic

  • @livedder99 his solo on this song made history

  • It was my wonderful wife, whom I love oh so dearly, who turned me on to what a wonderful voice Karen had. This happens to be one of my very favorite Carpenters songs. It makes me both happy and sad. ... :)

  • i listened to her when i was a kid 40 years ago.. gawd she was so beautiful I had such a huge crush on her and i still have a place in my heart for here.. face and voice of an angel

  • Mia dolce Karen R.I.P.:(

  • This song must survive cataclysm

  • Good for the ones who lost their love Just like me

  • I said goodbye to love, too!

  • voice of an angel karen was called home far to early none of these so called superstars of today could hold a candle to karen she acutally sung live and sounded the same as the studio no one today could do that RIP KAREN

  • @blackdog370 Talking about Shitira, sorry Shakira...
