I didn't like anything else the Carpenters did but this one is truly magnificent: her voice is so mellow in contrast to the amazing rock guitar rifts - who was he by the way? Still makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.
never bought any of their records but these guys are ok..their songs have melody..don't know why so many people disrespect them..theres a lot worse music then this..
Karen had a very loving family. She got hung up on being thin.....how sad is that to believe she needed to be? Died of heart failure from starving herself at the age of 32 I think.
My sister really liked the carpenters, but i was a bit of a rock dude...however this song completely blows me away,KC's singing as well as that guitar solo...well it's right up there!
"No one ever card if I should live or die". How untrue Karen. I love you still and the memories of my youth that your sweet voice brings to my mind. My heart skips a beat whenever I hear you, your brother playing piano/singning and all those beautiful harmonies. Always and forever - Jimmy.
You watch the American Music Awards, The Grammy's...there is nothing like this pure music, not lip synced, just pure put together great sound...delivered....
The genesis for this song was almost on a whim. Richard was watching a movie where an important song "Goodbye to Love" was talked about (as part of the plot), but was never actually sung (in the movie)... Richard liked the title so much he decided to write the song!
Rich & sweet.... finely crafted song....My favorite guitar lead of all times.. including Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Van Halen and all others... I think it was Richard Carpenter on lead....?.... Happy Birthday Richard Carpenter !! Oct.15th. Today.
@RegisPPalmer That was an excellent guitar riff by the late Tony Peluso. it's been said that Richard and Karen both loved his playing and went out of their way to hire him.
This is about the only time you will see them singing this song....I mean on video...there is no other I can find....it is amazing. I wish Richard would come out and do some stuff now, and try to do some things with other artists...but I know he has a big family nowl

@tamerswan Yea...."Close to You" is probably my fav Carpenters song....when it came out I was in elementary school...2nd or 3rd grade and I had just started liking girls (I was getting over the "cootie" phase LOL) and there was this girl I really liked but she already had a boyfriend...he was in our same grade but was a couple of years older and a little bigger than me due to the fact he had failed the 1st grade twice..he was also one of the bullies so I didn't stand a chance...LOL! That's life!
On this day one year ago, we lost the very talented and magical Tony Peluso...a lovely human being, a master musician and producer and a true friend. I lift my glass to you, Tone Bone...you were the best! Un bacio!
@Bluesdirections I remember the first time Tony had shown me this video and I noticed that he was biting his lip while he was playing the solo. He said, "Yeah, that's because I was so into it!" And that was Tony...music was everything to him.
After listening to this song over and over again. Still brings many sad and wonderful memories in my life and yet still brings that lump too my throat. Excellent song, excellent words. Than you Carpenters.
Dearest Karen: We miss you so much! You had a voice of an angel, and you made every song you sung, precious--because you were so precious! And you were so beautiful--everyone saw it, except you! Anyway, I love the guitar solo, and this is my favorite Carpenters song to "Crank Up"-lol! With love, BobbyK
I remember thinking how most of her songs, except We've Only Just Begun, were primarily about being hurt, lonely or sad. When I see this video, you can see where the anorexia is starting to affect her greatly, and this song was back in 1973, I think....Poor woman. she truly was singing from her sad heart.

I remember her death I was working a psychiatric unit caring for A BOY who was anorexic . It opened my eyes to the effects of this condition The lad did get better. I realised how easy people can be not seen even though they are in the main spot light of life
Too bad we live in a world where people have to write books about other people's misfortune & make other people out to be villians instead of just enjoying the music that was recorded for everyone to enjoy. Despite what you read friends The Carpenter family was close. Remember when the paparazzi followed princess Diana, & see what what sadly happened that night, well Randy Schmidt is doing the same thing to Karen Carpenter, except Karen's no longer with us,so fans get to endure all this crap.
I had always felt a connection to Karen and not just through her songs.I was only 14yo yet wept when I found out how grave her condition actually was. The day she passed I could feel an emptiness surrounding me but being a young boy with these kind of feeling was strange, so I kept it to myself. It wasn't until recently that I found out the she was born on the same day as me, March 2. She was too bright and too young to pass when she did. A part of me says she should still be with us today.
i was 11 in 78 when i got my first guitar. a 78 les paul. my buddies' older brothers were all trying to play boston, kiss, van halen and sabbath. i was studying with this ultra talented jazz guy in canada and he decided we needed to work on some ear training. i'm sure he expected me to bring in some boston vinyl...this was the first pop solo i wanted to learn on that 78. killer groove, killer voicing, hooky, great saturation. and of course...karen singing. R.I.P.
It was my wonderful wife, whom I love oh so dearly, who turned me on to what a wonderful voice Karen had. This happens to be one of my very favorite Carpenters songs. It makes me both happy and sad. ... :)
i listened to her when i was a kid 40 years ago.. gawd she was so beautiful I had such a huge crush on her and i still have a place in my heart for here.. face and voice of an angel
There was a Little Girl in walmart who look up at me & pointed to a Carpenters CD that I was holding, as I alway like to put the Carpenters CD's on top with today's music (if you want to call it that) that they sell. She was with her Mom, & the Little Girl said to me that "Mommy is taking me to see that group" I smiled trying to hold back alot of sadness, & said to the Little Girl that they put on the greatest concerts you would ever want to see, but the concert is in Heaven now.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
All of you people who are so good at trying to bash Richard Carpenter just proves what assholes & lowlifes that you are. Shit to me it's very entertaining because I know Richard is actually the opposite of what alot of you enjoy writing about. Believe nothing of what you hear & only half of what you see. RC never controled Karen & KC had all of the freedom that she wanted. Richard was just very into his work & wanted it to sound great. RC' mistakes too much touring, sleeping pill addition.
Thank you for all of the nice comments that many of you have left for me on my Channel. Please feel free to subscribe as this channel is dedicated to Karen.

voice of an angel karen was called home far to early none of these so called superstars of today could hold a candle to karen she acutally sung live and sounded the same as the studio no one today could do that RIP KAREN
@gulleymusic That is what makes this song amazing. It starts as a slow ballad and finishes as rock. The producers wanted the sound because of the Carpenters not so kool image. I think it was of the greatest guitar performances
@theshore465 I really don't think Richard Carpenter would ever expose any of the Carpenters music to American Idol, but then again with Rich one never knows, He stays away from the Time Life infomercials & many other 70's stuff which I can't put my finger on, but you know what I respect what ever he does, because he's done so much & still stays busy.
this is the first power ballad

I had always felt a connection to Karen and not just through her songs.I was only 14yo yet wept when I found out how grave her condition actually was. The day she passed I could feel an emptiness surrounding me but being a young boy with these kind of feeling was strange, so I kept it to myself. It wasn't until recently that I found out the she was born on the same day as me, March 2. She was too bright and too young to pass when she did. A part of me says she should still be with us today.

doesn't she need to breath when she sings?

i was 11 in 78 when i got my first guitar. a 78 les paul. my buddies' older brothers were all trying to play boston, kiss, van halen and sabbath. i was studying with this ultra talented jazz guy in canada and he decided we needed to work on some ear training. i'm sure he expected me to bring in some boston vinyl...this was the first pop solo i wanted to learn on that 78. killer groove, killer voicing, hooky, great saturation. and of course...karen singing. R.I.P.

It was my wonderful wife, whom I love oh so dearly, who turned me on to what a wonderful voice Karen had. This happens to be one of my very favorite Carpenters songs. It makes me both happy and sad. ... :)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
All of you people who are so good at trying to bash Richard Carpenter just proves what assholes & lowlifes that you are.
