  • 3nipplesVideo Thanks!! You have made my day, will harass the local shop. I'll spread the word.

  • This is a land where nothing changes, a land of red buses and blue bloody babies. This is a land where pensioners are raped while our hearts are being cut by the welfare state, etc, etc,

Sad it never changed!! Come back Matt, we miss you.

  • @BASECUBIC new album, Moonbug, is out this month. and he's re-recorded the vocals of Giant for the latest DJ Food album, The Search Engine

  • This is the best Weird Al video ever!

  • never heard this in australia -- love the whole sound n vocals are sublime joy

  • @daydreams4rock MTV used to play this in the early days in Aus. I remember they'd play this and Infected by The The and I'd try and get the drum beat right and always stuff it up. I still remember the arguments with my mate about the piano accordian being allowed in a pop song.

  • @rmered67 good to know -- i am not usually one who misses a good voice

    -- best to u n thnx here

  • @daydreams4rock It definitely got a lot of airplay on 2JJJ when it came out.

  • <3

  • awesome :D

  • Transonicbouy... Went away??

  • Such a beatiful song!

  • Probably the greatest song ever written. The lyrics still resonate as they did at the time.

  • Even now this amazing band is so underated, top band indeed.

  • It's weird and funny to see Matt Johnson with the bad 80s Adam Curry style mullet. I'm used to seeing him post Mind Bomb, with the shaved head. Thank for posting this vid.

Personally, I prefer the remix of this, entitled That was the day, from the Solitude CD. But that's just me.

  • all your friends and family think that your lucky

it was the day my life surely changed, and how seriously wrong they were.

  • Is this in Worthing?

  • BBC NEWS 13/08/09

    Matt Johnson eats dogshit

    Manics stood there laughing

  • just 2 weeks ago when i heard a new version of this ..quite good as well-

  • MERVEILLOUS WONDERFULLLL

  • ...all the money in the world couldn't buy back those day.

  • I used to listen to this in my way to a weekend in the beach, back in Lima-Perú. The music was-and is still unique and great, and so the lyrics, which meant a lot for me back then when I was starting college. This is, however, the first time I see a video for it. I guess... This Is The Day.

  • @pantonec This comment is very cool, brother. I may be 19, but I still appreciate and feel I gain perspective from others' experiences, even if they're merely told to me. This song is meant to bring people together. Hell yeah.

  • heavy tune x

  • British bands fucking rule!

  • This is the song i got wed too, now sharing with my 14 year old daughter. The best implanted in my DNA.

  • all the old new wave bands are visiting manila. will they? heeh.

  • I love this song. tks to youtube for finding this song again...

  • Love this song

Manic Street Preachers have ruined it ...

  • amazing band come back guys and am sure your happy to get some££ from the Manics Matt lol

  • I'm a sucker for an accordian in a pop song.

  • I thought I was going mad when I kept hearing the Manic Street Preachers on the radio doing a song I was sure I'd heard before. So glad I found this and made me remember hearing it originally in Empire Records. This is so much better than the MSP version. Chooon!

  • had to listen to the original again to wipe the sound of the manic strt p's away. how horrible, and no mention of the the....Still, there never was enough recognition of them, but I love them!!

  • One thing that's really cool about this song is please notice how no one is Internet fighting here. No trolls, no bad vibes. I'm a believer that were all products of our environments, one facet being that we all have this The The song in common. Most of us heard this in our youth back in our more impressionable years.

A year ago I made comment as to how this song changed my life. I'm 53 now and still thankful this song is part if my musical DNA makeup.

  • @bigriceburner it only takes 1 moron with no life to start a virus of internet fighting...fight the good fight brother

  • @bigriceburner part of my musical DNA too...great way to put it...cheers.

  • @bigriceburner Matt would love that. Shame he went away.

  • @bigriceburner Bang on fella, they set the tone for many peoples lives. Certainly a time of change.

  • thumbs up if the M&M's commercial from 2007 brought you here.

  • @kalteich It's not the reason I came here, but that was a good commercial. Kudos to those M&Ms for knowing good music.

  • wow, I've heard this song back in the 80's but never knew who the artist(s) were....LOVE IT!!!

  • Top 80's band, never got the due respect or fame like some other of those cheap shitty 80's band that did just that..... capitalism rules I guess in music ,yukkkkkk

  • ..."Well you didn't wake up this morning, cos you didn't go to bed,you were watching the whites of your eyes turn red.The calendar on your wall,is ticking the days off,Youv'e been reading some old letters, you smile and think how muchyouv'e changed, all the money in the world couldn't buy back those days."..

  • Caught me by surprise today when I heard someone blaring this song in their car. I asked them, was that song on the radio (knowing that it hardly ever got air play, esp. in this day). They lifted up their ipod to show me. They were even more surprised when I said, that's The The.

  • The happy theme music playing to an unsettled life, more so that a quiet life of desperation, this goes to starting down that path... think back to when you were in college.

Soul Mining works in so many ways.. right down to the cover art that Matt's brother did 2 versions of.

  • Great song and I loved when videos featured the band and not a movie.

  • excellent.

  • E eu anunciei esse clipe no primeiro programa em que trabalhei como VJ... Um Pix, substituindo a Cuca, q tinha ido para o Disk MTV... (séculos atrás rs). "This is the day/ Your life will surely change". Caraca, e como.

  • X3 I HEART THIS SONG

  • The glorious moment when u find that song you've been searching for longer then you can remember ^_^ I <3 the 80's!!!

  • haven't heard this for years...love it

  • classic! Absolute brilliance! Loved The The for 28 years now and never once considered he might have made videos! Vive Le Le.

  • Brilliant band but a bugger if you try to google The The

  • what happen to the day's when things are simple and beautiful we are now busy with thing's that makes us happy temporarily but the simple inner joy is gone THE THE is correct this is the day when things fall in to play.. I still love the simple thought that remain in our days.

  • empire records ending brilliant

  • Great song. What about that hair cut!

  • Levou cinco anos pra eu achar essa musica que conta os meus 50 anos de vida.

  • 80's Classic. love it

  • THE THE THE BEST !

  • agreed. Amazing how people missed THE THE in general. They were (and are) far better than most.

  • @MyLifeinJapan09 do you like tears for fears?

  • @bujilou Yes on the first 2, never could guess why they went so far off track afterwards... It's a Mad World!

  • DU CARALEO ESSE SOM.

  • Everyone who claims to be a songwriter these days needs to sit their ass down and listen to this piece of craftsmanship

  • His voice is similar to Lou Reed's.

  • "The calendar, on your wall, is ticking the days off The calendar on your wall is ticking the days off You've been reading some old letters You smile and think how much you've changed All the money in the world Couldn't bring back those days."

    Very sad yet powerful lyrics.

  • He does look a lot better with the hair shaved off

  • A totally underrated, unique song. I'm in love.

  • We are all mummies 200 years from now! Wow, do I feel old in my stomach!

  • This song was played by a writer who won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay that night in his hotel. And why not?

  • a friend introduced me to this song a long time ago. it is one of the defining songs or unique song of the eighties.

  • Breakbeat and E's came and took it all away, ..and then the world changed..no seriously, I wonder, was this music just too clever and intense, cause when the Stone Roses, with their dumbed out chic acidy Happy Mondays and ..that was it for wordsmiths and clever wordy pop like Elvis Costello and this dude. They just got wiped out in a year (88-89). Bands like Primal Scream just went with the trend, hired a technician.

  • Usually when you hear some one rocking there rocking with a guitar but this song... no... there rocking with the accordian by god.

  • I have to admit that I first heard this on a M&Ms ad.

  • Love it!! Awesome..

  • Awesome song

  • maravilhoso!!!!

  • @ANTIJACKSON and they are idiots...

  • the The has been my favorite band since the early 90's but I hadn't seen this video before. Thanks so much for posting it!

p.s. That is some seriously epic mullet 80's hair that Matt had. Wow.

  • A timeless classic. Still regularly listen to Dusk particularly, an excellent album.

  • The The is one of my Top 10 fave bands of all time and has many a song that take me to an exact place, time, event and/or friends now long gone.

  • Good memories. Use to listen to this song on Live 105 in SF.

  • Love this song. Am surprised it dont have more views. But all in all, a great song.

  • @UltimateDarkSim post it on your facebook to generate more interest.

  • This reminds me of being 24, and being madly in love with someone who used to play The The as we lay in bed. As with so many men back then, it didn't come to anything other than heartache!

  • @FlamingFairy Oh, we could be talking about the same man, sweetie! I too remember being 24 and listening to this in bed and in his car...I wish you sweet dreams, Flaming Fairy!

  • i think,I've already heard this melody.

But I can't remeber were an when.

    Maybe the Boss Hoss?

    Does anybody knows?

  • I love this song. I am now 20 years older than when I first loved this track but the thing is it could be written about me.

  • @Userfriendli Glad I'm not the only 40 something that loved The The!

  • @dillymaumoon Me too! lol

  • Actually, I think also that no money will bring the world the joy of these days, I cry with longing for the good times that are gone

  • @mfvlopes .... i've been crying for 25yrs now.......

  • I appreciate the profound connotation!

  • To me: No one could improve!!

Oh, Matt, take care of yourself ...

  • Club950, NEO, Smart Bar and Exit in Chicago embodied this song's spirit...

  • Wow, great to see this. What a great song!!

  • 950 Club Chicago 1984 The height of New wave, Punk and alternative all crashing together.

  • send me the link where I can download the album for my mother.

    Thanks in advance;)

    mfg deinemuddajo

  • all the money in the world couldnt buy back that hair matt, forgot he used to have any, bitter sweet brilliance

  • I think I just came!

  • Great song. Terrible video.

  • This song was playing on the radio the day that we brought our baby daughter home from the hospital. :-)

  • @xjazz2 Well, bringing your child home from the hospital is certainly a life-changing event.

  • @xjazz2 :)

  • @xjazz2 Couldn't have been a better song. :)

  • Flock of seagulls my ass!

  • flock of seagulls

  • This song let me get away from alcohol. Thanks much but I can't listen to this without tearing up.

  • @bigriceburner I agree! Enjoy your day. Enjoy your life.

  • THE THE my favourite band of the eighties!

  • highly under-rated 80s band.

  • @smartarse001 Actually it was never a band. It was Matt Johnson. The man!

  • @steph16mtl ...the point I'm making is yes, Johnson was the force behind them, lyrically, but without the inclusion of say, Sinead O'Connor, Johnny Marr and a crew of over 20 involved in the creation of the brilliant 1989 album Mindbomb, it just would not have been as good.

Don't get too hung up on 1 person - true art comes from collaboration.

    Peace!

  • @smartarse001 - Not under-rated, nowhere close. The The got mad respect -- but not the /recognition/ they deserved.

  • Pure pure nostalgia...! Time travel exists... and it happens by closing the eyes and listening to songs like this. :o)

  • This song goes out to Demetri G. I should've moved Jess and I to Chicago, and then accepted your marriage proposal! You're the 'BEST' man I have ever known! Miss you! DeeDee xo

  • your having a laugh!!!! 26 years ago!!!!!!!

  • Fucking excellent song - Who'd have thought an accordion would be so catchy? - And fuck all to do with France!!!

  • Yeah, this is great, and I agree with a previous comment: They do sound very English ( something in the lyric's maybe). I have 'This Is The Day' and 'Uncertain Smile' on one of those humongous 80's compilation cd's...and they are both brilliant songs! Thanks for uploading!

  • i cant believe you got this video.i luv it

  • Brighton....mods!!

  • Red-haired Rob...is that YOU biting on that darkwire? :D what up, brother! still in T.O.?

    A.S. downunder.

  • Thanks for posting. Painful, yet exquisite.

  • Unforgettable =D

  • ¡Un gran clásico de los 80's!

A great classic from the 80's!

  • ha ha najs vid

  • I play this when I go for job interviews.

"This is the day your life will surely change."

  • @beepollen1 Hi honeybee, not heard this for years, its fab......!!!!

  • One of the Best Songwriters of our time. Thank You, Matt, for being a huge part of my teen years.

  • i like this song but i would like even more with lyrics because my english is not too good

  • Not many accordian led pop songs, especially not this damn fine!

Vic Goddard and the Subway Sect-Stop that Girl and Lloyd Cole-Brand New Friend both also genius and also with accordians! (all I can actually think of) and now out of fashion, maybe it s time for a re-birth!

  • Looks like everyone loves this song as do I.

  • You could've done anything, if you'd wanted.

And all your friends and family think that you're lucky.

But the side of you they'll never see

Is when you're left alone with the memories

That hold your life together like -- GLUE

  • epoca boa que nao volta mais saudades

  • Classic. So is the rest of the album.

Our heads are so crammed full of inane and irrelevant 'stuff' - they really are folks, and I'll be the first to admit it - that it takes a song like this to clear some mind space and allow us to reconnect with life, again. Beautiful tune.

  • Roll out of bed, look in the mirror

    and wonder who you are

    but it might be

the last day of your life

What will you do if tomorrow it's all gone?

    You won't be young forever

There's only a fraction to the sum

    You won't be young forever

    nor will anyone

Look at your life, who do you want to be before you die? Look at your life, you haven't got forever

  • i like this song!reminiscing my high school days...viva new wave your the best ever....

  • Threesome soundtrack too...

  • Seanny Johnny boys!!

  • although it makes me feel old, this song is still awesome

  • Me too, especially when I heard this song being used in an M&M's TV commercial.

  • @happyhead64 Thank you. I knew this was in a commercial but couldn't remember which one.

  • i love this song and Uncertain Smile, great songs

  • unbelieble song

    unbelievble hair, Mat

  • totally uplifting song, and more amazing to think what a great songwriter Mat is.. This is a guy who can write "this is the day", and opposite to this wrote "I've been waiting for tomorrow most of my life".. Genius at work!

  • cool brow

  • Me encanta..

  • Funny how well this song has aged. Surprised that none of these new bands haven't covered this one.

  • viewer # 78000

  • Awesome Awesome

  • Yo naci en los 80's por ende vivi los 90's, de esta música no se mucha pero entiendo la nostalgia que hay por la epoca.

  • What movie was this song used? Was it Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful?

    I can't remember.

  • I think it was Empire Records, that movie w/Renee Zelweger

  • all the money in the world couldn't buy back those days.. this is the day your life will surely change..

  • Great song! I hate that it was used it for an American auto advert...

  • La mejor canción del grpo, sin duda...THE THE - 1984

  • amo esta canción....................

  • i didn't know matt was going blond in early 80's hehe. i love this song.

  • marvelous song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • always good to hear this album.

  • ugly clip but really beautiful song ;-)
