This is a land where nothing changes, a land of red buses and blue bloody babies. This is a land where pensioners are raped while our hearts are being cut by the welfare state, etc, etc,
Sad it never changed!! Come back Matt, we miss you.
@daydreams4rock MTV used to play this in the early days in Aus. I remember they'd play this and Infected by The The and I'd try and get the drum beat right and always stuff it up. I still remember the arguments with my mate about the piano accordian being allowed in a pop song.
It's weird and funny to see Matt Johnson with the bad 80s Adam Curry style mullet. I'm used to seeing him post Mind Bomb, with the shaved head. Thank for posting this vid.
Personally, I prefer the remix of this, entitled That was the day, from the Solitude CD. But that's just me.
I used to listen to this in my way to a weekend in the beach, back in Lima-Perú. The music was-and is still unique and great, and so the lyrics, which meant a lot for me back then when I was starting college. This is, however, the first time I see a video for it. I guess... This Is The Day.
@pantonec This comment is very cool, brother. I may be 19, but I still appreciate and feel I gain perspective from others' experiences, even if they're merely told to me. This song is meant to bring people together. Hell yeah.
I thought I was going mad when I kept hearing the Manic Street Preachers on the radio doing a song I was sure I'd heard before. So glad I found this and made me remember hearing it originally in Empire Records. This is so much better than the MSP version. Chooon!
had to listen to the original again to wipe the sound of the manic strt p's away. how horrible, and no mention of the the....Still, there never was enough recognition of them, but I love them!!
One thing that's really cool about this song is please notice how no one is Internet fighting here. No trolls, no bad vibes. I'm a believer that were all products of our environments, one facet being that we all have this The The song in common. Most of us heard this in our youth back in our more impressionable years.
A year ago I made comment as to how this song changed my life. I'm 53 now and still thankful this song is part if my musical DNA makeup.
I can remember listening to this track and others everyday and night. lights off blaring in my headphones. this track seemed profound to me at the time. It still does in a way. always will do. love everything about THE THE n Mtt Johnson. yep i even changed my name to matt johnson
Top 80's band, never got the due respect or fame like some other of those cheap shitty 80's band that did just that..... capitalism rules I guess in music ,yukkkkkk
..."Well you didn't wake up this morning, cos you didn't go to bed,you were watching the whites of your eyes turn red.The calendar on your wall,is ticking the days off,Youv'e been reading some old letters, you smile and think how muchyouv'e changed, all the money in the world couldn't buy back those days."..
Caught me by surprise today when I heard someone blaring this song in their car. I asked them, was that song on the radio (knowing that it hardly ever got air play, esp. in this day). They lifted up their ipod to show me. They were even more surprised when I said, that's The The.
The happy theme music playing to an unsettled life, more so that a quiet life of desperation, this goes to starting down that path... think back to when you were in college.
Soul Mining works in so many ways.. right down to the cover art that Matt's brother did 2 versions of.
E eu anunciei esse clipe no primeiro programa em que trabalhei como VJ... Um Pix, substituindo a Cuca, q tinha ido para o Disk MTV... (séculos atrás rs). "This is the day/ Your life will surely change". Caraca, e como.
what happen to the day's when things are simple and beautiful we are now busy with thing's that makes us happy temporarily but the simple inner joy is gone THE THE is correct this is the day when things fall in to play.. I still love the simple thought that remain in our days.
"The calendar, on your wall, is ticking the days off The calendar on your wall is ticking the days off You've been reading some old letters You smile and think how much you've changed All the money in the world Couldn't bring back those days."
Breakbeat and E's came and took it all away, ..and then the world changed..no seriously, I wonder, was this music just too clever and intense, cause when the Stone Roses, with their dumbed out chic acidy Happy Mondays and ..that was it for wordsmiths and clever wordy pop like Elvis Costello and this dude. They just got wiped out in a year (88-89). Bands like Primal Scream just went with the trend, hired a technician.
This reminds me of being 24, and being madly in love with someone who used to play The The as we lay in bed. As with so many men back then, it didn't come to anything other than heartache!
@FlamingFairy Oh, we could be talking about the same man, sweetie! I too remember being 24 and listening to this in bed and in his car...I wish you sweet dreams, Flaming Fairy!
@steph16mtl ...the point I'm making is yes, Johnson was the force behind them, lyrically, but without the inclusion of say, Sinead O'Connor, Johnny Marr and a crew of over 20 involved in the creation of the brilliant 1989 album Mindbomb, it just would not have been as good.
Don't get too hung up on 1 person - true art comes from collaboration.
This song goes out to Demetri G. I should've moved Jess and I to Chicago, and then accepted your marriage proposal! You're the 'BEST' man I have ever known! Miss you! DeeDee xo
Yeah, this is great, and I agree with a previous comment: They do sound very English ( something in the lyric's maybe). I have 'This Is The Day' and 'Uncertain Smile' on one of those humongous 80's compilation cd's...and they are both brilliant songs! Thanks for uploading!
Not many accordian led pop songs, especially not this damn fine!
Vic Goddard and the Subway Sect-Stop that Girl and Lloyd Cole-Brand New Friend both also genius and also with accordians! (all I can actually think of) and now out of fashion, maybe it s time for a re-birth!
Our heads are so crammed full of inane and irrelevant 'stuff' - they really are folks, and I'll be the first to admit it - that it takes a song like this to clear some mind space and allow us to reconnect with life, again. Beautiful tune.

Roll out of bed, look in the mirror
and wonder who you are
but it might be
the last day of your life
What will you do if tomorrow it's all gone?
You won't be young forever
There's only a fraction to the sum
You won't be young forever
nor will anyone
Look at your life, who do you want to be before you die? Look at your life, you haven't got forever
