Kanazawa is & will for ever be an example for all karateka. By the way there are 2 versions of Jiin in Shtokan, the 2nd being with Gyaku Uchi Uke ° Gedan Barai all the kata during.
I do Ji'in in Karate Sankukai, and it's slightly different, unfortunately no way to find a sankukai version on the web....any chance on your opinion...you'd be surprised of a good execution of Ji'in in the way Master Yoshinao Nanbu modified it... (same is for Bassai-Dai and Annanko)...OSS
really if u talk smack about kanazawa or any other martial artist u are fuking stupid and should consider leaving martial arts. if u criticise that shows that u really dont know nothing about karate or anything related to it. the point of karate or any martial arts is to improve oneself, not compare ur self with others or talk shit bout them. nuff said
@deejin25 Well said, friend. Many talk as if they will ever reach the level that men like Kanazawa, Asai, Higaonna, Demura, and many other karate masters have. In reality only a few will ever fully understand.
Best thing for each of us as martial artists is to mind our own yard, make sure it is clean and presentable before we comment on other people's yards. Especially those who have much bigger yards to take care of than we do.
@deek77 In terms of Shotokan Kata he's one of the gold standards. Now Shotokan isn't the place to go for say grappling or economy of motion based techniques, but like everything else on the earth it has strengths and weaknesses. I DO find it funny someone claiming great knowledge of Karate, Kata and Budo spends so much time Trashing Kanazawa, especially since Kanazawa is so widely revered. Sometimes people trash their own reputations without knowing how bad they look. Lol!
@deejin25 Agree totally. Certain styles emphasize certain aspects of fighting, that's the beauty behind all martial arts. It's a big waste of energy focusing who/what is best or worse than the other(s). Real question is, am I the best I can be? That one question should keep a person occupied enough with their own progress in their chosen art that they won't have time to criticize others.

Kanazawa has left the field of real karate just so that he can claim his "version" of the kata. True karate do doesn't do this. One cannot claim to be a master when one doesn't care if a form is correct. Ego is not kata, kata is not ego!
i hope you don't study shotokan, because if you knew anything of the history you would know that funakoshi changed the kata as well to make them easier to learn and to express his vision of the form. not everything has to be purely traditional, if this is self expression then let the man express himself, if you want tradition, go study shitokai. either way i doubt you have any business commenting on that man's legacy
Good comment. The simple truth is that as much as we should stay as close to the original as possible, certain things get lost in translation between instructors and associations. I'm not saying its right, but slight variations just happen from time to time. By the way, this guy that you are arguing with causes trouble on every Shotokan site. Its really unbelievable. I don't even bother responding to him any more.
Seems like theres a lot of people who like to make comments about other peoples techniques...Sensei Kanazawa should be respected by every person calling themselves a karateka. He trained with the likes of Sensei Enoida, Sensei Kase, and Sensei Shirai to name but a few. Who the hell are we to say whats right and wrong? I have had the extreme honour of training with Sensei Shirai once, and we have no right to make comments about their techniques. *They* are the teachers, *we* are the students.Oss!
I've seen both forms, looks like Kanazawa performs an older form of jiin... anyone knwos more about this? 'Cause I'm trying to learn this kata, but everywhere I go I see a diferent way!!
With JKA.Yes,that is true. With SKIF.Kancho Kanazawa is doing the Kata correctly.Kancho Kanazawa has modified some of the movements. He can do that, as he is a 10th Dan and we are not.
don't you think that somewhere between theoretical perfection and optimal execution moves/stances need to be adapted to particular practitioner's body-type or limitations? I think there is no perfection unless the theory is adapted to suit one's physical limitations or quirks. The rest of the proof is in the pudding and they can kick your ass, they are doing it pretty well!
I am no expert but many karate moves have hidden techniques or intents. Many of them presume attacks with various sorts of weaponery. Your tae-kwon do eyes perhaps do not appreciate these subtleties as you are thinking of hand to hand combat (?)and much of karate kata presumes otherwise...
I had the oportunity to train with Sensei Kanazawa this past week in Philly. The video must have been from a while ago. He is in his 70's now. He's still amazing to train with.
Ha ha ha, if you know nothing about karate then please refrain from making a "technical" comment. Whatever next, maybe his belt wasn't tied quite tight enough for you ?
Hi Nogek. I have trained in both JKA and SKI, and I have noticed a tendency among SKI karateka to push the front knee outwards while in zenkutsu dachi. I don't think this is formally how SKI dictates to do the stance but from a JKA perspective it is not proper basics. I do see some of that in Kancho's front stance unfortunately.
I'm just wondering if the committee members of the JKA or the SKI will be there to judge your stance when it's really needed - i.e. in a dark and lonely place.
Kanazawa is a fighter, if we are disputing front knee placement go look at Best Karate. SKI certainly does things differently than JKA, I too have trained in both. The way Kanazawa does his front stance has much more to do with his personal fighting style than with what the technical team at JKA headquarters dictates.
I do think there is a difference. Though I don't think it is really our place to be critisizing Kanazawa's stance. personally I think however he does it is probably pretty good.
Kanazawa is & will for ever be an example for all karateka. By the way there are 2 versions of Jiin in Shtokan, the 2nd being with Gyaku Uchi Uke ° Gedan Barai all the kata during.

It's interesting to see Shotokan iterations of karate kata. I do Shito-ryu myself, and Ji'in is very different in our style.
Bty, I what do you guys think about IKF? Internation Karate Federation.

The double blocks after kick and punches are in contrary, the gedan barai must be on the front leg.

front stance as in both feet should be facing forward perfectly and they are to a 45 degree angle kthxbye
gus1632 4 years ago 2
That's incorrect. Rear foot is to be directed as much toward the front as possible
kthxbye
