Al chez is better. Oh and by the way bbcowboy100 I think the name of the person you are thinking of is Al Chez. He marched with the Saints and then marched for the Cadets from 1978-82. Oh and he also marched with the Bushwackers after that.
I heard this guy play once in NJ in 78 or 79. He had to be a very sick young man to play as wildly, angrily and passionately as he did. The sickest part was every note was owned entirely by him, without having to reach. Simply the most talented horn player I ever heard. Does anyone know if he's playing professionally now? If so, please post a link.
Oh my god...he played those solos with a valve and rotary! I always heard the recording, but never saw. My first year was '78 and I played one, but the tone was nothing like that.
We had a soloist in High School that played the Pagliacci solo almost verbatum of what Jim did. He could scream for HS! Frank Vallot.

@jfaro18 Probably starts out half valved, and lip trills up to the top note.

I don't have the expertise to comment on who was better, they both had successful professional careers.
The Saints must have had some hornline with Brady & Chez.

I don't have the expertise, or care to comment on which was better.

The Saints had some helluva hornline with Brady & Chez

I agree that Chez was a very talented horn player but I don't think anyone then or now could have even carried Jim brady's horn case.
