  • We had a soloist in High School that played the Pagliacci solo almost verbatum of what Jim did. He could scream for HS! Frank Vallot.

  • Jim Brady.

Do a search for Toast and Jam band.

That was my first year in corps, we got to watch the bananas a lot.

  • jfaro18 - Pagliacci. A drum corps classic.

  • What's the name of the first song?

  • How does he do that thing at 0:47?

  • @jfaro18 Probably starts out half valved, and lip trills up to the top note.

  • I don't have the expertise to comment on who was better.

But they've both had successful professional careers.

The Saints must have had some hornline with Brady & Chez.

  • Al chez is better. Oh and by the way bbcowboy100 I think the name of the person you are thinking of is Al Chez. He marched with the Saints and then marched for the Cadets from 1978-82. Oh and he also marched with the Bushwackers after that.

  • @crossmenk

I don't have the expertise, or care to comment on which was better.

They both have had successful professional careers.

The Saints had some helluva hornline with Brady & Chez

  • I agree that Chez was a very talented horn player but I don't think anyone then or now could have even carried Jim brady's horn case.

  • Check out the Bridgemen Sat 20th in Bayonne Rehearsal ... Jim Brady is supposed to show & play

  • is it even legal to be this good?

  • I could be mistaken, but I believe this is the year Maynard Ferguson was in the booth as guest announcer and commented after :

The kid playing solos for the Banana group was fantastic !

  • jim brady was the man there not many poeple these days are like that

  • At least no one in DCI anymore.

  • is scott dean comparable to him?

  • I heard this guy play once in NJ in 78 or 79. He had to be a very sick young man to play as wildly, angrily and passionately as he did. The sickest part was every note was owned entirely by him, without having to reach. Simply the most talented horn player I ever heard. Does anyone know if he's playing professionally now? If so, please post a link.

  • vesposito27 --- are you Jay, the screamer from the Phantom Regiment??

  • Jim Brady was THE rockstar of mid-late 70s DCI.

  • Wow, brings back memories.

This kid Brady was off the charts.

  • Last song was Harlem Nocturne

  • What is the name of the last song?

  • Harlem Nocturne I believe

  • Oh my god...he played those solos with a valve and rotary! I always heard the recording, but never saw. My first year was '78 and I played one, but the tone was nothing like that.

  • A thousand years from now this will still be the sickest solo.

  • Jim Brady, you are insane.

  • That's Jim Brady on the solos. I saw him play them live in Bayonne NJ - 1977 AWESOME

  • ahhh those trumpets someday I wanna play that high..

  • Were they playing Land of Make Believe somewhere in there?

  • Hi, mellowyellowsheep! Yes . . . the second solo is in "LoMB". There's a cleaner copy of the whole thing out here now, posted by "kschannen"
