  • I want to marry all of them one by one. they just look so scruffy and punk (but cute) and English.

  • Reminds me of modern day chill wave, or glo-fi

  • The bass line is the only thing that is actually playing a tune. The only way the singers can stay on pitch is listen to the bass part. Listening to the screaching sounds in the background is headache inducing.

  • PLEASE come baaaaaack!

  • This is fucking awesome. A+.

  • @lkmrn325 "comment removed", eh? Got some haters up in here, yo.

  • ... classic.

  • you are all fags...get a life and a girl

  • @romanshirker And you're an asshole

  • @romanshirker im a fag and i get girls like its no big deal. im sure you have to buy her shit. guys are harder to get. and we can fuck just as well

  • This was my soundtrack during a three-month vagabond trip all across Brazil, during an economic crisis in 1987 that stretched my dollars to obscene levels -- like all-you-can-eat meat barbecue restaurants with beer for less than $2! Awesome times. And the very novel Jesus and Mary Chain were part of the soundtrack (the Cure's Boys Don't Cry was No. 1 that summer, i.e., winter in the Northern Hemisphere; ... did I mention that I saw the Cure at Maracana in Rio on that trip?) Kids-hit the road!

  • Good idea but to close to teenage imaginations...

  • Classic

  • 0:52 smiling accidentally

  • 19 persons listen to madonna and jennifer lopez.

  • ...but that the feedback on YTMU was actually composed quite carefully around the tune.

Even after hearing the two singles, when Psychocandy came out, it came as a huge surprise to hear this incredible, fully formed LP which hung together so well, and filled with real passion and dare I say tenderness! No-one had quite expected the album to be THAT good, judging by the singles alone. It really was one of those 'OMG, we never saw this one coming' moments in rock history.

  • To be fair to d/carrot, it is difficult to get the full measure of this band just by this song alone. When Julie Burchill reviewed it for the NME, she dismissed it as "a self-indulgent noise for adolescent boys to sit around feeling depressed and important to". And at the time, although I found the song interesting, it offered no clue that their first album would be a total masterpiece. Then YTMU came out, and I began to realise they weren't just blindly stuffing their songs with random noise...

  • @579enact That'll teach you to read the NME...

  • Cool.

  • The damnedcarrot guy on this thread is hilarious- if you want to read something funny look for his comments.

  • It freaked me out when this came out. No one had made so much great noise to such a melodic song before that i knew of at the time. Still love it now.

  • Love this song so much but it hurts my ears

  • @biffmuncher23

    Nice, this is idea !!!

  • to call JAMC "noise" is redundant, a pleonasm, that is, true by definition of shoegaze.

  • Brilliant. :-)

  • Lol this used to be the cult of my generation

  • i love noise

  • @nachowill95 I will never understand why calling music "noise" is an insult. I find quite a bit of beauty in the discordant.

  • @theghostsofgiants me too dude.. Noise pop is so much real that any kind of music

  • @damnedcarrot Why do you really care so much wether people like this or not? It's obvious you don't and by now everybody's understood that, but instead of leaving it be you continue with your pretentious bullshit and hypocracy. Why don't you continue with your real-life and 'excelling' in music instead of debating in some meaningless argument.

  • its funny cause damned carrot, you should go fuck yourself,

  • brilliant distortion and harmony!

  • Always loved this song. Thanks so much for posting - never seen the video before!

(Beach Boys x Velvets) + (Metal Machine Music) = JAMC

  • jesus + maria corrêia

  • whats this for a bass guitar? i saw it so many times but still don't know what brand it is.

  • @Ten0chA looks like a rickenbacker to me man

  • @Ten0chA Pretty sure whoever was on the bass in the early days (was is Doug Hart?) only had 2 strings on his bass!

  • Shoegaze!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh yeah=!%

  • Those screeching guitars are like sugar to my ears. :)

  • Years ahead of its time, these and The Cocteau Twins were the most original bands of the 80's!.....such a shame they turned away from feedback and effects with Automatic just as the shoegazers were coming in.

  • Oh yeah! Twenty years on and this still has the capacity to thrill... and offend. Is it music? Don't care. It just sounds good to me....

  • looking at past comments... how odd is it that more than twenty years after this was released there are still people getting annoyed arguing that this "isn't music", "just noise"? Well done Reid bros.

  • scotland

  • not to bad, but sisters, cult and all that.. not comparable.

  • Beautiful noise! ...and nice fringe Bob :-)

  • Didn't understand the fuss then and I still don't....guess I will never understand...

  • What a fucking band ! Seen these guys on the Rollercoaster Tour; they're a special band.

  • you might like more or less Jesus & Mary Chain's music but boy are they tossers.

  • @derpestarzt eeeeeeeeeeerm the issue here is their music, whats your excuse ?

  • if I buy a j&mc album what one should it be?

  • @shoekstra1419 the first ever? psychocandy, definitely. and then I'd say Honey's Dead or Darklands, personally.

  • Damn you Lewis.

  • hah it actually does sound a tiny bit like the beach boys to me. this is the only song i've heard from them though, so i don't really know. this is definitely a unique sound all around though. good stuff!

  • I wish people would stop comparing the JAMC to the Velvet Underground it's so far apart . I love both groups but it's just not alike. As for the beach boys wtf whats next Robbie fkn Williams?

The JAMC are unique in there own right , blues men from a dirty industrial background in Scotland thats the sound you get and thats what you should be accepting instead of inventing.

  • @grahampurdie

wouldn't say they're worlds apart tbh. especially in terms of their debut albums. plus it's open to interpretation. who are you to tell people what to be 'accepting' in terms of music? the man who scoffs at Brian Wilson....pfft. that whole album borrows from Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound' production.

  • @warsawza your full of shite and i'm telling you to accept that. I hate twats that compare bands, they always pretend to know too much.

  • The things you do with heroin...

  • ‎...sounds like the Velvet Underground doing the Beach Boys...

  • @soulagent79 eeeeeeeeh no it dosn't

  • went to see THE CHAIN in barrowlands 86,,,they were amazing. It lasted 35 minutes and the croud went mental..Lots of trouble outside

  • P.S.. damned carrot just likes to hear himself talk... he surely isnt even close to "getting it"

  • Minstrelldom..excellent comment.... these guys music is eternal..... remember when they came to Vegas in early 90's to Calamity Janes on desolate Boulder Highway out in the desert... was an amazing show

  • Back when alternative actually meant 'alternative', as in it sounded like no fucking else. Ive listened to these since I was 14, and never get bored of listening to em. The ultimate musical 'fuck you!'

  • a blast from my past!! <3 it!!!

  • Little bit like "Born too make you happy" Britney "Queen of Alternative" Spears...

    Yeah Suzi, its a joke.

    Still fresh.

'80 its a REALY Alternative music.

  • great song!!!!! Love JAMC always!

  • hey jarle~

  • I like this.

  • dont be silly they were not so importantant than VU.However they started playing 15min live sets thats all the material they had. They got passed the buddy holly on speed tag to make a lot of good songs and a pot of cash. They were very well marketed colour coded livery and srong logo.JAMC were a brand in the end the drummer Bobby went on to lead primal scream

  • I like the carrot's style... I;ll sign him/her up...

  • @damned carrot ...And another thing...."hipster morons"? I was 14 when this came out in 1984 which means that I'm 40 now. I am NOT a hipster moron. And "hide behind whatever's popular at the time"--When was the JAMC ever 'popular'? 'Popular' is the Lady Gaga & Justin Bieber pap that you mentioned--you clearly don't know ANYTHING about the JAMC or their fans. Detest their music all you want, but as I said earlier, take it elsewhere and don't run your mouth off about what you don't understand.

  • @aloraonvas In art this is the equivalent of someone throwing up and rubbing their feces onto a canvas and declaring it a beautiful painting. I have played and excelled in music for almost 20 years and have a deep understanding of music. I listen and play from almost every genre. This, is not music.. It is pretentious noise. If after almost 30 years you still cant see that it is time for you to grow the fuck up.

  • @damnedcarrot

And if after excelling in music for 20 years you can't understand that music is a relative taste and that some people feel alive getting drowned in noise that makes their head spin YOU need to grow the fuck up and stop being so fucking pretentious yourself.

    Fucking troll.

  • @Animatronica Hey, here is a suggestion. Buy a cheap amp and microphone. Point the microphone directly at the amp. Live Feedback! Wow! Spectacular! You can have it anytime you want, its self made and live! Here is another suggestion, find a tall building, climb it and then jump off.Self abortion!Taste is subjective to a point. If some1 liked pizza, some1 else liked pasta and another liked eating mud mixed with shit.Would you tell the 3rd person u respect their taste cos its all 'relative taste'

  • @damnedcarrot cock

  • @fishingrhod well said mate ;)

  • @damnedcarrot

Yeah I would, because that 3rd person doesn't owe me anything, and I respect their taste, even though I don't share it.

Just fucking grow up and go troll somewhere else. There's enough music to rebuild the world. Unstick yourself from the music that you don't like and go and listen to the stuff you like and be happy. You're such a negative fucker. There's space for everybody in this goddamn world man.

  • @damnedcarrot People said that Wagner was noise. The same of Sinatra and The Beatles. People dismiss Penderecki as noise, and go on to dismiss Xenaxis, Stockhausen and Cage with the same feeble criticism. The same of The Velvet Underground (an obvious JAMC) influence. You know something is good when pricks like you stick their fingers in their ears and say "oooh it's just noise, i can't tap my toes to this."

although you can, it's got a drum beat, a catchy melody and a conventional structure.

  • @Jaaaaam WOW, comparing this obvious garbage with Wagner, Sinatra and the beatles. If i ever start a totalitarian regime where my main policies include screaming at swans, setting fruit on fire and kicking over barstools, be sure to give me your contact so i can recruit you to my regime of lunacy. Obviously, anyone can sell anything to you. 99% of music has at least SOME credibility, however this is, objectively, unequivocal, scientifically, untalented rubbish that a 3 year old could replicate.

  • @damnedcarrot I will gladly join your regime of lunacy. The appreciation of music is subjective. While I can appreciate that you don't like this track, a lot of people do. That's why they're listening to it, there's plenty of other music out there for you to enjoy so why come on here to lecture those who do enjoy it about why it has no credibility and doesn't meet your standards. Comrade, that is why you lead this lunatic regime. It's just a silly thing to do. I'd like to hear this 3 year old.

  • @Jaaaaam You tell em:).it's the same on the Ocean Colour Scene page&another couple&i stated the same point,if you don't like it then don't listen, different people like different music/things,therz no need 4the slagging off some people do...

  • @damnedcarrot so how come ive not heard of you then if you have excelled in music then how come your nowhere near a music scene? wheres you 'beautiful painting' of music then so people can judge according to their relative taste and understanding of music ya nutjob

  • @damnedcarrot If you hate them & this sort of music as much as you purport, why the hell are you spouting off here? We don't care about your opinion--we happen to love the Mary Chain. Seriously, all the time you took to spout off you could've taken yourself off to another site. You're not pathetic because you don't like JAMC: you're pathetic because you felt the need to slather your angst all over this page. How hateful! Now I need to go calm down by listening to "Psychocandy" at full volume.

  • The otherday i got drunk and fell over in a music shop and created something better than this. GIVE ME MY RECORD DEAL IMMEDIATELY! AM WILLING TO WEAR REALLY SHIT CLOTHING AND HAVE CONFORMIST HAIRCUT!. k thx

  • @damnedcarrot but you have a shitty youtube opinoin

  • @braindamagehurts44 People who pretend to like this obvious lack of any musical merit are pathetic. Hipster morons. "omg this is so ironic" You have no originality or individuality and hide behind whatevers popular at the time because you are too souless to even have genuine interest in something. You people have no substance, no credibility, no sense, no taste, rejecting anything that isnt sold to you in a certain way. All of you need to wake up and realise how fucking boring you are.

  • @damnedcarrot yeah, people who pretend to like this are pathetic. nearly as pathetic as some dude posting prank calls to civic video.

  • @braindamagehurts44 Thats all you have to come back at me? Completely irrelevant. I thought i'd give you one last chance to retort before i block you, with something of substance. Quite stupid of me considering the inherent fact that you support this vapid rubbish. Even the sheep that follow Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga have 100 times more merit than someone that follows something so clearly rubbish in a vain attempt to be ironic and original. Enjoy life in mediocrity =) , cya

  • @damnedcarrot Not being funny mate, but you've got to remember this came out in 1984, nothing sounded like this in the chart at the time, they haircuts were not conformist in 1984, neither was the music. Also I doubt they spend their days on you tube picking apart other artists. I mean the drummers the singer of Primal Scream these days mate..

So what's your band? What you done? What makes you so good? Go take your pills for your obvious autism.

  • @messthetics My guitar fell into the amp the other day while it was still on. I was mumbling in my sleep at the time. I think i may of accidently covered this song.

  • MERAVIGLIOSI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LI ADORO !

  • Feedback paradise.

  • Beach boys n distortion 4ever

  • i think it's time for some beautiful noise.......

  • CLASSIC!

  • Equal parts gloom and glee

  • Try Suicide with Alan Vega. But hey, i love the jesus & mary chain.

  • @magnetAC Damn right! Early Jesus & Mary Chain sounds like a fusion of Velvet Underground and Suicide mixed with the pop sensibilities of the Beach Boys and Phil Spector's wall of sound. Bloody odd blend but it's awesome!

  • I swear I hear the Beach Boys down in there somewhere.

  • @artrca1000 Oh fuck off, you don't fucking say. State the bleedin' obvious. People like you want me to vomit over my own shoes. Intentionally.

  • Saw J.M.C. on The Tube in the 80's, it's taken me this long to realize their true quality...der!

  • I ♥ it.

  • Jesus lo mas de lo mas!

    aguante ginasia tambien!!

  • the album of b sides for psycho candy were even better. Sidewalking and kill surf city are great tunes. Love his voice.

  • EPIC WIN

  • Comment removed

  • I only really love PSYCHO CANDY! Nothing of the drum Computer shit that followed. Drums must be played by heart, even if it´S THIS way! Yes, Psycho Candy is a good follow-up of VU&Nico!

  • @ashetonpop I agree with the first sentence, but totally oppose your unwillingness to accept a drum machine. Drum Machines were around when the JAMC were still smuggling cheap cider into primary school.

  • I understand that , never/mind => beats off of time

  • Very good song!

  • fucking hipsters so unoriginal

  • @detectivepope

    quite the opposite actually

  • @achemicallaugh how?

  • My fav. band of the 80's!!

  • just love this song...

  • una banda de la puta madre

  • simple......pure quality from EKS finest

  • best band of the 80s

  • * * * * *

  • THE best fuck your parents, fuck everything, I'm righteous and you just don't get it song ever written.

  • wow, they dont make em like this anymore..Im sorry to say....GREAT video

  • i only heard this song a few days bck>>> but i absalutly love this one!!!:D

  • can you click "allow" on embedding id love to put this up on my bebo.:)

  • Great!

  • whats great about the JAMC is Jim Reids strong sense of melody. Even though its 3 chords, he hits the notes dead on while all goes to hell around him. Lovely

  • william once said you don't really need to be eric clapton to play guitar!

  • In the late 80s they played the sunset strip, The Roxy I think. Waiting in a huge line to get in, my girlfriend sees a washed up David Lee Roth walking past. Nobody seems to care and we start laughing. He then gets to the corner, turns around and swans back through the crowd without being acknowledged.... Harsh. The band played for twenty minutes and then walked off...harsher.

  • Is that Bobby Gillespie on drums there?

  • Most likely. He drums on this album and after that I think they usually used drum machines--I just don't know his face.

  • apropos of this tune - whatever happened to the "upside down" upload?

such a tasty nugget... ah, you are missed, my little feedback bomb!

  • good to see that the cats in top shop are just catching on to proper style...

  • 'Hello, Mr Recording Engineer, i think we need to lose some of the high end. It might help get rid of all that static"

    "no..no...leave it. It'll be your 'thing'....(sniggers)...

  • LOL... good one.

  • my ear bleed

  • thats what makes it cool

  • My favorite band of all time. "A place to bury strangers" is 1% of this band.

  • so true this

  • landmark

  • masterPIECE

  • I think Psychocandy is as important as the first V.U.!!!!

    Classic band!!!

  • @dsidesnyc Yeah thats the truth! I think so too!

  • you have good taste in music

  • @dsidesnyc One of the best albums ever, yes. Along with maybe something by Joy Division or The Cure.

  • @MowgliX don't forget My Bloody Valentine!

  • @ricardosanTM and don't forget about pavement, sonic youth, or wilco

  • I think it is so cool how we went full circle. people and bands are dressing like this again. u see similarities in everything from the hair to the clothes

  • These guys were so kewl!

  • luv it so much.

PSYCHOCANDY is one of ma fav albums ever. freakin amazing!

  • i'll never forget the jesus and mary chain at Metropolis in Montreal-very friendly music!

  • I just LOVE the way this video was made...very, tottaly, definetely "anti-video"...!! Jimmy, William and their pals giving a shit to what's suposed to be acting on a vid...Jimmy mumbelling any crap at the mike, but the lyrics itself...the kids goofing around during the shots...! XD Sorry, folks, I DO love Jesus & M C, but I can't help it when I watch this video, it's quite inovative and hilarious at the same time...!

  • Q: what does a good record do?

A: it should send chills down your spine.

  • this band also changed my life - along with Big Black who were just nasty - lol

  • never heard of em,ill def check em out

  • @deSadetheImpaler never heard of big black? they're pretty good. songs about fucking is a good album.

  • i checked it out \m/ im suprised ive never heard of em before.good shit!

  • steve albini's band. you probably heard of him. he recorded in utero, surfer rosa, and the awesome pod by the breeders. nice favorites: eno, slint, beatles, melvins, dead kennedy's, jeff buckley, pavement, the fall, suicide, black flag, the damned, stogges, television, and beach boys. all awesome stuff.

  • Haaaaaaaa!!! soooooo good!!

  • Feedback is truly a wonderful thing.

  • i remember buying used tapes(cassetes) and one was the album psycho candy.

All the noisy feedback, at first i thought something was wrong with my tape or stereo. I then bought the cd and yep...nothing is wrong with my tape.

sometimes annoying harsh and sometimes just brilliant.

  • annoying harsh is what makes it different from any other dreampop. you clearly listening to this band for completely wrong reason.

  • @Ellionart

true. didnt say it was bad, just very hard to get into..there are some songs on that album that i just can't stand because the squeals remind me of a pocket knife scraping a chalkboard

  • march 85 they changed everything for me.....brilliant

  • the drummer was me mate he once ate a sausage supper after a king kebab as wiz gob smacked

  • I think "Wolf Eyes" were influenced by these guys....see my Wolf Eyes vid which has an interview with them

  • I was always asked...have you got shit on your needle or is the record stuck. My friends loved me for these guys and the Birthday Party.

  • it really reminds me the 60s garage rock bands... with in the drums some influence from 60s girl groups... the voice and the saturated noisy guitars are more modern...

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Raveonettes are clearly influenced by those guys

  • agree ;)

  • they were more an art punk and post punk than a shoegaze or dream pop band.. noise rock would definitely fit even better with them ;)

  • probably the most venerated band from the underground ever.

  • wow takes me back..great fkn track...
