I brought a tarp rather than a tent just because it was smaller and lighter, and also to try it out, since I probably wouldn't camp under the tarp in summer (bugs).

I was being a bit cautious, trying to avoid walking over ice alone. Most of the ice was probably thick enough to walk over, but if you fall through alone there's no one to pull you out (when I winter camp with friends we normally follow canoe routes and walk over ice whenever possible, so we can take tobagans).
