  • Julie Andrews was scorching here. What a babe.

  • For pity sake ! It's only an Oscar.

  • Christie also picked up the "best knockers" award later on that evening further enraging the inconsolable Ms Andrews

  • Both Julie's are INCREDIBLY Beautiful!

  • Julie Christie is great but Julie Andrews killed it in the sound of music she should have won for that instead of Mary Poppins

  • @Jbirdrules3818 Julie Andrews , great though she is ,never acted beyond her comfort zone in either movie on the other hand Julie Christie showed great depth with a complex character in Darling and rightfully won ,also Elizabeth Hartmann was a close second in "A Patch of Blue."

  • @Jbirdrules3818 true - but no matter how bad the defeat tasted at the time, a spoon full of sugar would have helped her swallow it

  • Thank god she won for this, I felt bad when she lost for Away From Her

  • 'Darling' just about sums up Miss Christie. She is exquisite.

  • Elizabeth Hartman was so good in 'A Patch of Blue.'

  • Those of us who lived near Hollywood know that there was a very, very influential hollywoood columnist, named Sidney Skolsky. He wrote for the Hollywood Citizen-News, based in the heart of hollywood. Oscar voters had easy access to that paper.

Mr. Skolsky pushed hard for Julie Christie in his columns.

He also favored Oskar Werner for Best Actor, but he missed on that one.

  • She is Al Pacino's favorite actress. :)

  • Very smart of Ms. Christie to wear a SHINY GOLD DRESS, to match her Oscar, LOL.

Also enjoyed her playing TWO characters in 'Fahrenheit 451'

  • @MajorCaliber I think it was a jumpsuit which made it even more special.

  • Oh my God, should have had an Oscar for her acceptance performance !!

  • Just saw the movie. It is really good.

  • oh Elizabeth Hartman...RIP

  • I remember that night, and I've been in love with Julie Christie ever since. Perhaps most of all for the brevity of her acceptance speech.

  • It's Samantha Egger, as in "egg salad," not "eager." Apparently, Rex had never heard of her, but the nominees are announced in advance... so he could have asked.

  • @defundthewar He knew her later when he starred with her in DOCTOR DOOLITLE.

  • @defundthewar Rex was quite the alkie.

  • dr zhivago <3

  • She has been nominated 4 times. I think she should have one for both "Afterglow" and "Away from Her," and so I am glad she is an Oscar winner (for "Darling" which I think she deserved, too). Great great actress and amazing woman.

  • Julie Christie is the definitive screen icon of the 60s!

  • Both of Julie Andrews and Christie did very well in the year. I do think both of them deserved the Oscar, and I'd prefer they to making it tie like Barbra Streisand and Katharine Hepburn.

Maybe Christie won the Oscar because Andrews had won it a year earlier for Mary Poppins.

  • SOM should of won..

  • the most gorgeous woman ever

  • The wrong Julie won!

  • She also got a belated birthday present that night. Her 25th birthday was four days before (on April 14). This April 14, she will turn 70. My oh my how time flies!

  • it's professor higgens!

  • it's professor higgens!

  • The oscar sucks. No need for crying.

  • Julie Cristie was good in darling but i found her a bit annoying in it... Andrews was far better in SOM

  • Style. Class. Glamour. That was Hollywood back in the sixites. I liked that gold outfit that Julie Christie had on. Nowadays, these stars dress like slobs!

  • But it was really for her performance in DOCTOR ZHIVAGO - one of the greatest non nominated performances in Academy hostory

  • I love you, julie

  • Julie Andrews should've won, anyway...

  • she is dressed as the oscar too.

  • julie i don't care if you're now 69, marry me.

  • Wasn't she precious.

  • i kinda wish julie andrews won but she already won for mary poppins and julie christie did a great job in darling

  • I'M TRYING TO FIND WHEN ELIZABETH TAYLOR WON FOR VIRGINIA WOLFE... IS IT OUT THERE ANYWHERE???

  • @thadxxx I don't think she showed up for that Oscar win (Walter Matthau alluded to it when he won best supporting actor). It's a shame since it's considered one of the best performances by an actor ever.

  • @thadxxx She didn't show up because everyone knew that Richard Burton would lose for the same film so she was pissed off and taking her man's side and boycotted the Oscars that year.

  • Wow. she's gorgeous and hot.. i know she went with Warren Beaty for a long time.. Did she ever have children?? I love when the oscar winner is genuine and not fake like this.

  • 5 Gifted Ladies!

  • Silly woman..

  • acting...

  • read about elizabeth hartman (a patch of blue) on wikipedia. poor woman

  • @irishjanet

Don't forget The Secret of NIMH.

  • I want her outfit!!!

I wanna go the supermarket in it!!!

  • She's a whore

  • The greatest actress of the 20th century!

  • @MYSHARONA48 of the 20th century? No I wouldn't go that far. There are plenty who are better than her: Maggie Smith, Liv Ullman, Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, etc. But Christie does have a certain mesmerizing star quality.

  • Damn ! That was sooo fake !

  • what a beauty she was

  • @Billerobreren Still is. Have you seen "Away From Her"? Damn, I hope I look HALF that good when I'm 65!

  • if she's a great actress, how come she was so phony here?

  • Julie Christie needs to do more movies. What an amazing actress.

  • Who is the Hunk sitting next to her in the audience???

  • I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Julie Christie, but "The Sound of Music" is a more enduring film than "Darling" and Julie Andrews was way beyond par in it.

  • I love julie's gold lame mod pantsuit.

  • She even looks great in 2010

  • @nemebiax no she doesnt

  • wow! she beat strong coontenders. cool.

  • This is back when they didn't try to make a big, lame spectacle of the Academy Awards. It was just straight up, down to business giving away awards.

  • Samantha Eggar deserved too. Also Julie Christie was amazing.

  • A gorgeous woman....and an extremely talented actress! THANKS for posting this!

  • @JubalCalif Gorgeous indeed. No less so now than then.

  • My ranking :

    1. Julie Christie

    2. Samantha Eggar

    3. Elizabeth Hartman

    4. Simone Signoret

    5. Julie Andrews

  • Forgot to say it's delightful to see Elizabeth Hartman as one of the nominees. She gave a sublime and heart-rending performance in A Patch of Blue. I still remember that film very fondly.

  • I miss the good old days when the Oscars didn't make a fuss out of everything and winners would keep their speeches simple. it's painful to watch everything blown out of proportion nowadays

  • Insane how she only has one Oscar. Oh well could be worse, Garbo, Chaplin, Grant, Wayne...?

  • @CorieFaulkner

Wayne got one for True Grit

  • She overacted in this particular ceremony, however.

  • She has a timeless quality about her. That hair and that dress on anybody else today would look weird and dated, she could go looking like that today to the Oscars and still look sensational.

  • @thanth11 she defined the 60's. i have an understanding with my wife,,,if julie comes my way, my wife is okay with me leaving her.

  • Cool :)

  • In the words of Ali G, " Me Julie!"

  • i just love Julie Christie's reaction....that's how anyone would feel if they win

  • Greatest actress of the 20th century!

  • Greatest actress of the 20th century!

  • Smoking hot!

  • Haha I can only imagine both Christie and Andrews holding their breaths when he says "the winner is Julie _____ "

  • Robin Wright Penn was born ten days before this even happened.

  • Julie Andrews stands back stage because a few minutes earlier she accepted the best director Oscar award for Robert Wise ("The Sound of Music"). He was off somewhere on location filming "The Sand Pebbles" Julie had not managed to filter back to her seat out front yet.

  • Julie Andrews stands back stage because she had a few minutes earlier accepted the best director award for Robert Wise (off in Asia or somewhere filming The Sand Pebbles) and somehow hadn't managed to filter back to her seat out front.

  • It was not her second film.

  • eager ? take the pole out miss andrews , julie yu can stop your over acting now.

  • julie andrews a debido ganar

  • Why is Julie Andrews randomly stood up? :P

  • prettiest girl i ever did see

  • prettiest girl i ever did see

  • Julie looks great in that gold pajama jumpsuit!

They actually really were high-fashion pajamas!

  • Miss Christie had some competition Samantha Eggar and Simone Signoret..she wasn't known throughout the world like Andrews...it was a scandalous night and the following yr. she arrived in a mini dress ! read about it...love this oscar channel...you rock!

  • an excellent piece of footage, the same year of Dr. Zhivago which lost to The Sound Of Music...Christie should've been nominated for both films...check them out!

  • She acts so much like Diana here. I don´t like it.

  • The only one I have seen out of the nominees was Julie Andrews, so I cant make an opinion, but Julie is an amzing actress, and Im sure all the others were too.

    Davidx

  • draling.. DARLING will be broadcast tonight Tuesday jan 5 2010 on TCM do yourself a favor. I saw it once.. didn;t like it but at least it was diferent for the times

  • the academy must be ragen cause the sound of music had so much succes .the most famous film of all time while i have never even heard of julie christie of "darling" lol julie andrews should have won !

  • The fact that so many ignorant comments are allowed here is appaling. So you've never heard of the winning performance, yet immediately claim another one should have won? Don't be ridiculous. And Diana Scott was miles ahead of Julie Andrews singing and beaming character.

  • Well if you never heard of "Darling," you have some catching up to do. One of the best performances by an actress, ever. The right Julie went home with Oscar.

  • Well, if you never heard of "Darling," you have some catching up to do. One of the best performances by an actress, ever. Oscar went home with the right Julie.

  • British Actresses are better than American!!

  • Since when is nationality relevant when judging a performance? Besides, enoigh with actors playing physically or mentally challenged people to get an award.

  • She did a Paltrow!

  • No, Paltrow did a Christie!

  • yeah .with that lack of derriere !

  • +I just love her...she is so hot and sexy

  • MEMORABLE!!!!

  • The girl with the dark hair with the white dress on right behind Julie Christie is really hot !!

    Do anybody else think so?

  • yep

    well spotted that man!

  • Julie Andrews should have won.

  • Great moment. I wonder could any of today's stars keep a thank you speech under 20 seconds?

  • There's George Chakiris, in black glasses, sitting directly in front of Elizabeth Hartman.

  • I loved her in "The Go Between"!

  • Julie Christie looks amazing, but she did act like an idiot accepting

  • Gotta agree. I love her and her performance in "Darling" was marvelous, but this speech is pathetic.

  • It's called excited. How would you look? Forget it, I don't want to see you in gold pajamas.

  • what's funny is nowadays if she won she would be acting the exact opposite and not want to show she was excited at all.

  • Um, why is Julie Andrews shown standing in the wings (or in a basement, for that matter) at 0:17?

  • Read the previous comments.

  • Shes not standing in the basement. Shes standing at the side of the stage cause she just finished presenting an award. just like Audrey hepburn in '68.

  • Julie Andrews was offstage as she had just presented the best Actor to Lee Marvin. The big question is Where is Samantha? She was there. Only Simone was not there.

  • She has always had more gifts than she'll probably let us (the audience) ever know. But she has a right to her gifts. They belong her property, and she guards them. Her only obligation is to share them with us when she feels like it. Which may be never at all, if that's her choice.

And THAT'S what makes her so radiant.

  • She is so poised, charming and beautiful that she is incredible.

  • I've wanted to see this for ages - my favourite girl in my favourite film - but I had NO idea that my other favourite Julie in my OTHER favourite film was ALSO up for an oscar that year and didn't win....

  • wondeful!

  • I remember watching this show! Julie Christie was unusual in that she wore a minidress instead of a gown. She looked great, though.

  • she wore a mini dress in 67 when she oscared paul scolfield. i think in 66 she wore a dressy pants suit.

  • i like eating blondes.

  • You go, Julie!

    Congrats! Wonderful actress!

  • Julie Christie is the most beautiful actress of all time,,,,and looks gorgeous and very hot!

  • @TheCaptcarl Lyz Taylor and Janet Leigh were more beautiful than her.

  • @WiltatKansas Apples and Oranges here...............but I don't see Janet Leigh nearly as sexy as Liz or Julie C.

  • @TheCaptcarl ihete her smanthe eggar should've won

  • She is the most Beautiful actress of all time,,very very stunning!

  • Elizabeth Hartman comitted suicide & Simone Signoret died of pancreatic cancer.

  • Thanks for the morbid news. Your point?

  • Julie Christie was hot & still good looking

  • Most beautiful Best Actress winner ever.

  • That would be Jessica Tandy.

  • Julie is beautiful but don't forget Charlize Theron, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, and Audrey Hepburn.

  • she and this movie are all extremely underrated. one of the best best actress winners ever

  • 00:19 MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN EVER!!!!!

  • gorgeous!

  • Julie Christie truly deserved winning the Academy Award for "Darling". I wished Ms. Christie would have won for "Away from Home" as well.

  • It was Away from Her in which she was truely astonishing, but I think Cotillard deserved it more (even though I prefer Christie as an actress) and I think it was rather a supporting role.

  • away from her

  • I read that Julie Andrews and Julie Christie are very good friends. even, when Christie was in Hollywood, she was living in the Julie Andrews' home!

  • @missuniworld I love those ENGLISH GIRLS even the ones OF TODAY. Liz Hurley,,Kiera Knightly,,Kate Beckensale. YOU JUST CAN'T BEAT EM.

  • She rules!!!!!!!!!

  • Where's Samantha Eggar? Does anyone know if she attended or not?

  • Apparently, Samantha Eggar was in attendance. According to INSIDE OSCAR, the "cameras showed Julie Christie, Samantha Eggar and Elizabeth Hartman in the audience, and Julie Andrews waiting backstage"; Simone Signoret wasn't present. The camera definitely didn't show her in this clip.

  • Yep, I read that in the book as well. I assume that's a mistake.

  • Its a shame Julie Andrews didn't win for The Sound of Music. Considering it was on the silver screen for nearly 10 years after its initial release, i think she deserved it.

  • I 100% agree!

  • One of the most beautiful and talented actresses of all time. I just love her reaction when her name was announced. A well deserved win her portrayal of Diana Scott was amazing!!!

  • @grumpy88888 I've had a CRUSH on her for years and years. WARREN BEATTY was a dumbass for letting her slip thru his fingers. OF COURSE ANNETTE BENNING IS "CHOICE" stuff ALSO

  • This reminds me of Marion Cotillard's speech - ironically, Julie was favourite to get the very Oscar that Marion won!

  • I love those old foreign films and Julie in "Darling" is up at the top....this was scandalous....expected to win was the other Julie, that is why she is standing...she was a presenter....Julie was only known in the usa for Doctor Zhivago...FABULOUS POST 5*

  • Great nominees from great films. While Julie Christie was great in "Darling", you can't forget the role for which Julie Andrews was nominated - Maria Von Trapp in the Best Picture of 1965, "The Sound of Music". Elizabeth Hartman (may she RIP) was also wonderful as Salina D'Arcy in "A Patch of Blue", with Sidney Poitier and Shelley Winters, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for that film.

  • One of the BEST winning performances of all time, her Diana Scott was powerful and unforgettable. And what a line-up that year, Samantha Eggar should have come second in my opinion.

  • She was fabulous in the film and deserved to win. Thank you for posting this rarely seen clip!

  • first comment

  • She's insanely beautiful. And still is!

  • OMG that legend that is Julie Christie as a young starlet. also great to see the "other Julie" in the film.

    and R.I.P. Elizabeth Hartmann

  • A beautiful and talented actress :)

  • She was just as out of breath as was her fellow nominee Marion Cotillard in 2008.:-) Darling is really a must-see movie and Christie's performance is magnificent in it.

  • WHAT A BABE

  • @acidreflux08 YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. I tell my wife all the time 'IF WE WIN THE LOTTERY I'M GOING TO VISIT JULIE ON THAT ENGLISH FARM WHERE SHE LIVES." WE JUST LOVE HER.

  • Very well deserved! Julie Christie is simply one of the finest actresses ever!

  • She won for Actress in a Leading Role.

  • You are correct. Thanks for catching that mistake.

  • why was Julie Andrews standing? also in Kathrine video, Audry Hepburn was standing.

  • they were probably presenting an oscar before..

  • because she just had presented the best actor award to Lee Marvin. And in Kate's win, Audrey hay presented the best actor award to Rod Steiger minutes before.

  • They were backstage, waiting for their turns to present an award, Best Actor in both cases.
