Gene has played in so many bands, that I bet even the haters like some of his work and they don't even know it. Not only is he a great drummer, he's a great guy as well. It says a lot when someone can be overly good at something and not let it go to their heads. He can also play way outside of his normal metal scope.

I first heard his drumming in Death (Symbolic) back in like 97 or so.. was dumbfounded at how much control he had in his playing.. following what he has done since that time kinda relates one thing beyond another; no matter what band he was playing in, he always kept the characteristic of a powerful beat, but always managed to work it to the band he was with at that time.

Drawing comparisons to nowadays drummers is foolish, as I can almost guarantee that the new blood would call him a hero.

My drummer and I used to say, "He's in control of the situation," meaning that if you gave Gene Hoglan a riff, he would come up with something great to complement it--not an easy task on some of Chuck Schuldiner's twisted material.
