Well I'd be careful with them. Hopefully they're cleaned very very well before hand, as I can't imagine just HOW dirty regular used coins are. All those hands! Plus, the metal thing isn't always good. Metal toxicity and all, though it's probably not too likely to get it from coins, but it's always nice to be safe. Maybe try letting him play with plastic buttons instead, if it's the shapes he likes. :)

I've seen birds do tricks with putting coins in a piggy bank. It's just fine as long as they are cleaned.
