as a rookie in 1971 (awa) don muraco sported an amazing physique, a huge upper body and a flat, tapered waistline. that went south when he did. in 1972 i was ringside to see rookie jimmy snuka. in his corner? don muraco. they were touted as former football team mates. hmmm.
By the end of the match, I was referring to when Muraco fell out of the cage through the door and not Snuka leaping off the top onto Muraco. Up until he falls out the door, it's a really good match. Snuka's leap is what truly sets it apart from other cage matches. Snuka tried this leap against Bob Backlund in a cage a couple years before, but Backlund rolled out of the way and Snuka crashed.
In the full version of this match (available on several WWE DVDs), you can plainly see Mick Foley in a red and white plaid shirt giving Snuka and Rogers the "I love you" sign. He's hard to miss - long haired kid standing up holding up his right hand. As cage matches go, what made it a classic was more the set-up to the match, and the finish. The ending was kind of lame, with Muraco falling out through the door. The cage match Snuka had with Backlund was actually better.
Gorilla Monsoon, one of the best play by play guys of all time! " It's bedlam here in the Garden". Plus he took it so serious, telling you rules, insight to a cage match, cliche's . Classic. "Snuka is busted wide open"
These were the bombass cage matches. Not like that pussy shit today or the blue steel cages back then. People had no problem showing a little blood either. Wrestling has gone soft like the rest of the pussies who censor entertainment. RIP 80s wrestling
I agree! I, too, remember the blue steel cages. What was the point in having THAT KIND of a cage? Maybe to "make it 'easier' for the wrestlers to "get out," since a number of them (probably) had very little/limited 'climbing ability.' " That's why I watch ECW, XPW, and CZW, wrestling. Cage matches (I'm talkin' about the kind of cages that are used to put criminals and animals in!), light bulbs, tables, broken glass, barbed wire, and folding chairs, in my opinion, THAT'S WRESTLING!
Yeah, it was all to make it easier to get out, a stip I hated. I grew up in the South so that meant you stayed in the cage till you won via pinfall or submission.
this is the match that inspired mick foley (a.k.a. mankind a.k.a. cactus jack) to begin wrestling because he attended it. It is said that at some point you can see a young mick foley in the crowd on the original WWF/E filming of this event. I haven't spotted him yet, but I'm also not sure if this is the official WWF/E Filming.
I had a crush on Jimmy Snuka. I was in the 6th grade when this match took place. I love the old school wrestling. So much better than the crap that's on today.
you are not lying no crush but monsoon and jesse ventura the greatest commentaters the wwf ever had man it is all a soap opera today i just watch smack down on friday so it kills my work hours and thats it no pay per views no fucking way i was at this match i was 10 years old when this happen i live 20 min by subway from msg
I'm pretty sure that this match is from one of the old Coliseum Home Videos that the WWF put out in the 80's and Ventura used to be the host for them.
i used to have it as well....great tape....wasnt the texas tornado match with bob orton and rowdy piper on it as well......some sort of lumberjack match with savage or something
This was the only reason my dad finally agreed to let us get cable TV. When I told him they showed these WWF main events at Madison Square Garden on the MSG Network, he hooked us right up. Thanks Dad! Those were great times.
He's REALLY hard to spot in this version because of the quality, but he is at about the 3 second mark off to the right wearing his red and black flannel and he's pointing at Snuka. If you've never seen it before there is no way you'd spot him.
0:04 He's right there.

If you see a fat kid in the audience with a Puma t-shirt, that's Bubba Ray/Brother Ray Dudley (according to himself in a shoot interview). :)
