its a condition where the "socket" part of the hip joint, is malformed and the "ball" fits loosely pinching nerves and destroying cartilage causing a lot of pain to the animal.
lol. yeah newfoundlands are HUGE when they're puppies. It's adorable because they don't realize how big they are and when they walk under small tables they sometimes take the tables with them.
What a beautiful video! Your newfie does the same as mine, play tug of war and once he wins, which is always, he'll turn around, bring right up to my face saying let's play dsome more mom. This is my first one and I'm totally enchanted with him.
I was thinking about getting a Newfoundland, I have a lot of little brothers and I think the temperament would be PERFECT. When does the hip dysplasia usually start?
kk022: The hip dysplasia can occur at any time. For mine, I noticed a slight limp at about 6 months. Wish I could afford the operation, but that runs about $6 to 8 grand. It's so sad to see how limited they are, not to mention the days when the pain keeps them done. At least my vet gave me pain pills for him. When you get your dog just be sure to show the children how to pet and play. Don't allow kids to be slappy or to crawl over them. You'll love your dog, I promise.
They don't eat a huge amount - about the same as a Golden Retriever which is almost half the weight. These guys have a low metabolism, so they don't eat much...and they don't do much either!
@Corvus133 No, they are not lazy. They can be very energetic, especially when they're young. But with their metabolism, Newfoundland dogs tend to limit their running and playing to short spurts. They are not like Retrievers for high energy. We have a young one right now, and when he gets going - watch out! But a half hour later it's zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
LOL SO SWEET!

It's an abnormality of the hip found in most large dog breeds. It can be quite painful if left untreated.

I love my Newfie, Mako. But, like all big dogs, he gets hip dyspacia, so watch that.

@tvboy61 When you say they don't do much, are they lazy? How much exercise do they need?

It was cute when Ethan hit his head and Sam stopped tugging to lick him better, then started tugging again!!
It's amazing how good Newfies are with kids - our newf is so gentle with kids, but knows he can rough us up a bit!!
