When the doc said I needed one of these, this is the video I found and it about creeped me out since I'm not a fan of needles. But I had FOUR of them in the course of three months or so after kidney cancer surgery. Turns out my lungs (and abdomen) were filling up with PEE since my ureter was leaking at the rebuilt kidney. And that was only the beginning of the fun!
i just had this done to me yesterday ..also one from my stomach two days ago it caused u to feel fainty if the fluid is remove on a high speed so u gotto be careful on the pce u go otherwise u can colapsed ...it was awesome tho :P
@Sophie010808 Exactly. Theres one membrane surrounding the lung and one membrane surrounding the inner rib cage. They put the needle into this pleural space, as its called, and drain, not all the way in to the lung. This method is also called pleural tap...
@hunterkershen they dont puncture the lung, the puncture the pleural cavity, the space where the lung is inside, that cavity has become filled with a fluid, and because of the fluid the lung cannot properly fill with oxygen, by removing the fluid the lung can open up properly :)
Another big mistake this doctor made is at 1:55 . She removes the guide needle. She places it down in front of her and continues with the procedure. Any time a needle is removed from a procedure, it should immediately be disposed in the "sharps" container. Never leave a used needle just lying around like that and risk a needle exposure.
I will be surprised if this patient did not get any infection of the blood (sepsis) after this procedure. The physician ( I hope she is) is breaking sterile field by going to the chair, touching vacuum bottle against bed and touching patient exit site. Please let me know if you had any problem as a result of this poor sterile technique.
oh i had this done when i developed severe pneumonia...painful but i made sure i stayed very still for the doctor...they filled a jar the size of a mayonaise jar..the first time! had the procedure done a few more times in the course of a week,,kept in ICU...
You are so brave. Hope you are feeling all better now sweetie! Thank you for sharing this, my mom is going through this for three weeks and I heard she is so brave.. thank you..
Dude you have the heart of a hustla!! I had to get a spinal tap once and it was by fay the most painful experience I have ever had in a hospital. Took it like a man homie, much respect!!
I've assisted in two thoracentesis, and they're not that bad. The main thing is inserting the needle in the right spot, and over the rib, so to not damage the intercostal arteries that run under the ribs.

@TheASipes I don't think a thoracic surgeon performs thoracentesis (or, at least, not only a t. surgeon would do it). Either way, I think the person doing it is a woman. SWDYK?
This just happened to me a few days ago. 1&1/2 liters. Feels really strange when your lung goes back to it's original shape. That was awful. Never again.
hurp...yucky...i'm not sure i'd be that calm just chatting with the doc while theres shit pouring out of my chest cavity and a huge catheter up in there...

This is pretty cool. I do cytology on pleural fluid but have not been able to see a thoracentesis. I hope I never have to have this done. After watching this guys other videos I've concluded either he is way messed up on pain meds, or he is a tough mo fo.
I am really wondering if I need this procedure done because ever since I was 12 (17 now) I've lived with a very sharp pain in my ribs when breathing in. Doctors said it was Pleurisy, but I know its not cuz it moves aroung to my other ribs, my stomach, back and chest. plus it should of went away with the meds they gave me. It's so painful all I can do is cry. I really hope my new doctor finds the problem.
@shepherdtotheweak it's actually a trocar... it's a piece of steel that resembles more like a straight plumbing pipe with a very very very sharp end haha
On listening to discussion, it sounds like he was in an accident. The actual procedure should be painless except for burning when local anesthetic injected. I

dude thats what it felt like for me a few months ago, maybe i had a bunch a fluid in me... im glad ur ok bro.... im miss washington... ill go back soon
I have had this procedure done in the ER with no pain meds, this was hands down the most pain I have ever felt. After I was breathing better, they gave me morphine. This guy had a motorcycle wreck. He must have had morphine too. Even then, it's no picnic. When you have fluid in the chest, breathing is painful and difficult. It feels like your drowning. Headaches, chest pain, it's horrible
You know, once you get past the scary weirdness of it, it's kind of fascinating, and you start to appreciate how this procedure helps people breathe again.
