  • memories. I had this done about ten years ago. no fun.

  • I remember having this done when I was 12. I was so scared. I must admit though, it felt much better after the procedure.

  • Million dollar question what was producing the fluid? Heart? or Lung?

  • @farstarfilms Lung... it could be air or blood..

  • When the doc said I needed one of these, this is the video I found and it about creeped me out since I'm not a fan of needles. But I had FOUR of them in the course of three months or so after kidney cancer surgery. Turns out my lungs (and abdomen) were filling up with PEE since my ureter was leaking at the rebuilt kidney. And that was only the beginning of the fun!

  • thnx for the vid!! im a 3rd year med student and i have exams coming up and this is one of my questions ;-)

  • You are so brave. I dont think I could have sat there and done that without panicking.

  • i just had this done to me yesterday ..also one from my stomach two days ago it caused u to feel fainty if the fluid is remove on a high speed so u gotto be careful on the pce u go otherwise u can colapsed ...it was awesome tho :P

  • Anyone want some of my freshly made KOOL-AID?!

  • o_O

  • ouch...

  • if i saw that big ass needle going into my skin.... i would knock myself out

  • @hunterkershen His other lung. Derp.

  • i'm in the weird section of youtube again... i need to stop clicking those damn related videos.

  • It must have felt so good to have all that fluid out of there.

  • his mom was so sweet.

  • They dont puncture the lung itself. The puncture and put the "needle" in the space around the lungs, which is where the fluid builds up.

  • @Sophie010808 I remember doing this procedure once as an intern...and I actually punctured the lung.

    Sweet lady though...

  • @Sophie010808 Exactly. Theres one membrane surrounding the lung and one membrane surrounding the inner rib cage. They put the needle into this pleural space, as its called, and drain, not all the way in to the lung. This method is also called pleural tap...

  • How was he still able to breathe while she punctured his lung?

  • @hunterkershen they dont puncture the lung, the puncture the pleural cavity, the space where the lung is inside, that cavity has become filled with a fluid, and because of the fluid the lung cannot properly fill with oxygen, by removing the fluid the lung can open up properly :)

  • fuck that was tastey

  • Thanks for sharing this incredible video. How did this happen?

  • there was few mistakes in this procedure. broke sterile field

  • there was few mistakes in this procedure.

  • nicely done , but that does not seem to be 1200cc ,

beside , draining more than 1000 cc may cause lung Edema ..

  • Okay, I think I've had enough YouTube for today....

  • Another big mistake this doctor made is at 1:55 . She removes the guide needle. She places it down in front of her and continues with the procedure. Any time a needle is removed from a procedure, it should immediately be disposed in the "sharps" container. Never leave a used needle just lying around like that and risk a needle exposure.

  • @shelleyinthecity lies, your supposed to put sharps inside the mattress......noob.

  • I will be surprised if this patient did not get any infection of the blood (sepsis) after this procedure. The physician ( I hope she is) is breaking sterile field by going to the chair, touching vacuum bottle against bed and touching patient exit site. Please let me know if you had any problem as a result of this poor sterile technique.

  • @MrBababuwi This was likely a resident or medical student performing this procedure as Harborview is a teaching hospital.

  • wow, hope this made him feel better :)

  • Jesus Christ

  • I had same thing same amount. What a relieving feeling when your chest is emptied out finally.

  • oh i had this done when i developed severe pneumonia...painful but i made sure i stayed very still for the doctor...they filled a jar the size of a mayonaise jar..the first time! had the procedure done a few more times in the course of a week,,kept in ICU...

  • they drained 2-1/2 litres from mine when i was recouperating from heart surgery

  • Why pulmonology is awesome...

  • I had plueresy last year and the pain was unbelievable...I can't imagine what he must of went through with this...brave!

  • who performs this, nurses or?

  • @windexism doctors, nurses assist.

  • he's going to be a lot lighter!

  • You are so brave. Hope you are feeling all better now sweetie! Thank you for sharing this, my mom is going through this for three weeks and I heard she is so brave.. thank you..

  • Thats crazy....

  • when he stratend his back it must have felt so good when he inhaled

  • Damn...all they give us in the field is a lousy 14g needle catheter!

  • Should be breathing better now.

  • What was wrong with you that u needed this done?

  • Awww you poor guy! I hope you are doing well!

  • I love this stuff. I'm studying to be a nurse.

  • this if giving me a panick attack.. cant watch no more

  • geezus christ. ..

  • Amazing...

  • You spelled pleural wrong...

  • @krys10m that's the correct spelling for it!!!!!!!!!you just spelled it wrong, nice try though!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you

  • Did it hurt? When i did it, it actually didnt hurt much...

  • Just relax as I put this big ass needle in your back...I think not.

  • @colinkaiser well how does that fluid build up in his lungs

  • Dude you have the heart of a hustla!! I had to get a spinal tap once and it was by fay the most painful experience I have ever had in a hospital. Took it like a man homie, much respect!!

  • HOLY FUCK your snapping turtles need to see this LOL

  • YOU WERE BRAVE!!! I wOULD HAVE HaD TO BEEN KNOCKED OuT!

  • How does this happen?!? Is it from smoking or something?!?

  • @marinesallday well it said in the video he was in a crash.. and based on the keywords i'd say it was a motorcycle crash

  • cant you just hang upsidedown?

  • I want to try doing this! (the doctor part, not the patient part)

  • I am an emergency physician and have seen lots of videos on various procedurs and this one was among the best I have seen!

  • bubble and swing i had this, thanks for sharing what we went through. all the best rosie in england mine was in for 2 weeks

  • bubble and swing i had this, thanks for sharing what we went through. all the best rosie in england

  • That. Was. Awesom. Goregasm!

  • I've assisted in two thoracentesis, and they're not that bad. The main thing is inserting the needle in the right spot, and over the rib, so to not damage the intercostal arteries that run under the ribs.

  • ok guys how does it happen, why this thing gets into ur lung, how do u prevent it?

  • that is one cool operation

  • did they let you keep it!? thats a great conversation peice

  • i wonder if its quite satisfying

  • DUDE HOW WERE YOU BREATHING WITH ALL THAT FLUID ? DAM

  • is it hurt??u know i hv already 12cc on my lungs..shit i dnt like to get a thoracentesis..outchhhh....

  • you were so brave!

  • wow... what causes this?!!?? i couldn't believe how much came out!!!!!!

  • Nice vid. Thanks for sharing. Did they tell you what caused the fluid to build up? Did you have pneumonia before?

  • relax my assthis is what they did to me last nite and they dont let me c the video

  • Creo q alguien le dio a pulmon jajaja

  • "Just relax.......... WHILE I INSERT SURRINGE OF DEATH!!!"

  • Poor example of a sterile procedure on the thoracic surgeon's part! Notice his mask is not covering his nose, typical!!!

  • @TheASipes I don't think a thoracic surgeon performs thoracentesis (or, at least, not only a t. surgeon would do it). Either way, I think the person doing it is a woman. SWDYK?

  • @TheASipes woman re: "notice his mask is not covering his nose".... women can be thoracic surgeons :)

  • @TheASipes I was thinking the exact same thing! and check out the hands going from sterile to non-sterile fields!

  • @TheASipes masks do sweet fuck all. show me the data showing reduced infections from using a mask.

  • they just did this on my 9 year old nephew a few months ago in vegas cuz he had pneumonia

  • this is actually interesting, for those that are into the medical stuff!! lol

  • I would be crying... a lot...

  • @HaloFire26 It looks like he's on some heavy drug, so he's probably out of it.

  • This just happened to me a few days ago. 1&1/2 liters. Feels really strange when your lung goes back to it's original shape. That was awful. Never again.

  • That is amazing.

  • How is he even awake because he shouldn't even be able to breathe with all that fluid in his lungs? He tough.

  • hurp...yucky...i'm not sure i'd be that calm just chatting with the doc while theres shit pouring out of my chest cavity and a huge catheter up in there...

  • Bless his heart, what in the world caused this situation?

  • I'm a nursing student learning about lung disorders. It was one thing to read about a Thoracentesis and see pictures, but this video really helped to explain the actual procedure and what a nurse should expect her/his patient to go through. Thank you so so so much for sharing this!

  • @RentKlenex agreed! i'm an RN student as well & i'm more of a visual person so this helps a lot :) thanks @jjock

  • OMFG THAT LOOKS ROUGH

  • wow...thats all i can say

  • omg, i would probably pass out. does that white tube thing pierce the lung or does it is just enter chest cavity?

  • Makes me want to take a deep breathe.

  • it looks like root beer

  • Good day - Bonne journée

  • Oh my gosh this is so amazing! This procedure just dazzles me to no end. The human body is astounding...we've come a long way.

  • WAIT WAIT WHY DO THEY HAVE TO DO THIS????? THATS PRETTY DISGUSTINGGG

  • @BoILEdDoGZ so he can breathe and live, without it his lungs woud drown him because they would be filled with fluid

  • he was cute...

  • Thanks for sharing. I am studying this in school and this video is fascinating.

  • It is amazing i will admit that, but i have to add this to be funny. YEAH SLURPEE!

  • nice! Human cranberry juice! ^_^

  • I had this done....But mine was up higher near the shoulder...Doctor hit a rib on the first attempt...that was not fun!

  • i had that done to me just last week it was the awkwardest moment of my life...

  • you must feel so much better

  • ma che cazzo e sto schifo??? non l'ho ancora capito e un infezione???

  • This is pretty cool. I do cytology on pleural fluid but have not been able to see a thoracentesis. I hope I never have to have this done. After watching this guys other videos I've concluded either he is way messed up on pain meds, or he is a tough mo fo.

  • I am really wondering if I need this procedure done because ever since I was 12 (17 now) I've lived with a very sharp pain in my ribs when breathing in. Doctors said it was Pleurisy, but I know its not cuz it moves aroung to my other ribs, my stomach, back and chest. plus it should of went away with the meds they gave me. It's so painful all I can do is cry. I really hope my new doctor finds the problem.

  • 'just relax ok'....while i jam this tube into your lungs!

  • @shepherdtotheweak it's actually a trocar... it's a piece of steel that resembles more like a straight plumbing pipe with a very very very sharp end haha

  • I was cut off before finishing prior post. I meant to say that it CAN hurt as lung re-expands. But most common symptom is cough.

  • On listening to discussion, it sounds like he was in an accident. The actual procedure should be painless except for burning when local anesthetic injected. I

  • ouch.

  • Poor baby! That must have been horrible!

  • what was this kid's clinical presentation? he looks pretty young and healthy.... how was his recovery? Thanks for posting and letting us watch, dude. Hope you continue to feel better!

  • I had this done not long ago it was very painful but i agree after done you can breath much better

  • yesterday i Did 1000ml............but after 5 minutes of Pleural tap, patient developed Pulmonay Edema which took long time to revert.

  • omg that must hurt

  • O PULMÃO DO CARA TA BICHADO!

  • THAT MUSTA SUCKED

  • how did that feel goin in your back...

  • i went through this procedure a few months ago. 3.7 liters was taken out :) its completely painless cept near the end but even then it didnt hurt a lot. it just made me cough a little but it was SUCH a relief

  • wow, neat watching this, I know it was posted 3 years ago. But I just had this procedure done today and they took 1250cc

  • Buddha in the garden!!!!!!!!!!

  • i thought ur not supposed to talk or cough during this procedure....

  • @chocobo2288 the tube they leave in is very flexible so you can talk and cough with no problems

  • The average human male lung has a total volume of 3 L.

He had fluid in almost half of it. MIND BLASTING.

  • Relax? OMG, that looks painful... Wow, that is ALOT of fluid.

  • holy fucking shit omg how did u get tht?

  • Relax? OMG, that looks painful...

  • you know your fucked when the doctor says "just relax" lol

  • @xSHADOWCOLTx hahahahahaaaaa ahahahahahahaa

    That was funny..

  • @xSHADOWCOLTx exactly or when they sound like they hurt

  • dude thats what it felt like for me a few months ago, maybe i had a bunch a fluid in me... im glad ur ok bro.... im miss washington... ill go back soon

  • well glad your ok man... im from elma,,, 2 hours west of seatlle

  • I have had this procedure done in the ER with no pain meds, this was hands down the most pain I have ever felt. After I was breathing better, they gave me morphine. This guy had a motorcycle wreck. He must have had morphine too. Even then, it's no picnic. When you have fluid in the chest, breathing is painful and difficult. It feels like your drowning. Headaches, chest pain, it's horrible

  • my lombotomy

    drain your brains

  • my lombotomy

  • if you listen to him while its being drained he sounds better.

  • WOW MY GOD

  • Wow that's a ton of fluid ... must have been hard to breathe with it. What the world happened to you dude?

  • Okay first of all, how can there be that pressure to suck it out?

Second, what is that for a fluid? Is it like body fluid or what?

And how have it happend to him, that he got it ?

  • @AlexanderDupont The bottle they push it into is pressurized. He had an infection and this fluid accumulation is the result.

  • @mammasweet

Oh okay, i see. thanks :)

  • as he talks and the more it drains you can hear how hes getting better

  • You know, once you get past the scary weirdness of it, it's kind of fascinating, and you start to appreciate how this procedure helps people breathe again.

  • Your lucky it didn't get around your heart. That happened to me. I was in ICU.

  • What the Fuck happened?

  • holy shit 0.o

  • cool i hope your better now thanks for sharing this. my wife was gagging at like 5 seconds in it.

  • careless woman is not monitoring that the bottle is full already nor supporting the line from outside but rather just let it all hung out, Poor man he would have died without this proceedure out in a desolate village with no medical care from where I am from people die with lack of this simple proceedure. Lucky to be in the USA

  • omg....I had a hard time watching this. The technique used and the bandaid applied.....wow! - I'm still shaking my head. I hope the recovery went well and no infection developed.

  • omg....I had a hard time watching this. The technique used and the bandaid applied.....wow, I'm still shaking my head. I hope the recovery went well and no infection developed

  • Thoracentesis is not that painful and is done without making an incesion. It's performed by inserting a needle in the intercostal space into the pleural space and draining out the liquid unlike the barbaric way that's shown in the video.

  • Whoa that is one heck of a pleural effusion! I bet you were able to breathe a lot easier when all that crap was outta there!

  • Thank God for people can do such things. Amazing. Glad to know you are okay now.

  • OMG I'm so sorry for you! Poor thing!

  • Thanks God he is better no wait there is not God and it was the doctors nurses etc that helped is young man.

    Cheers Christine

  • You are ok kid just don't look back. Thank goodness for doctors and nurses.

    Christine

  • You are ok kid just don't look back.

    Christine

  • strong guy right there! hope ur feeling much better!

  • What causes something like this? Is it some sort of infection or something?

  • @headhunterzmma It is from fluid build up between the outer two layers of the lung. An infection could cause this but this case was due to trauma. I believe he said he was in an accident towards the beginning of the video.

  • He has to be on morphin or he is superman. Flip.

  • what was the cause of pleural effusion in this patient? (if it is not confidential, of course)

  • bohhhh alter,is ja hammer!!!!!!!!!!!!!RESPECT

  • I'm a RN and have seen people cry. You were very brave!

  • I am a medical technician and I run tests on fluids like these. Thanks for posting this so I can see the actual procedure!

  • Removing so much Pleural Effusion it could descompensate his entire system and create a pulmonary edema from fast expansion of his lungs.. =(

  • this kid right here is a hero..Look at that: talking and joking with the doctor while his lungs are being drained of gross yellow liquid!

  • stupid doctor ,stupid bitch,

  • WOW!!!! you are SUPERMAN!!
