this seems, as usual, totally over-engineered to me. Too many segments that have to all work in perfect sequence and are not reusable. Why not spend the last 50 years developing a single set of thrusters which lift and land the capsule a la spacex?
In addition, Ares1 must almost be the size of the Saturn rocket to have enough power just to carry this massive escape system. All because NASA wants to use Shuttle solid engines. See youtube Delta II explosion to see solid rocket fuel destruction and why the escape system must be designed to pull you miles away.
This massive extremely heavy escape system is only needed because Ares1 uses dangerous solid rocket fuel. You must have to get miles away so that solid rocket debris chunks do not destroy the parachute. That is why Soyuz, Falcon9, Saturn 1B do not need such a giant escape system because they use liquid fuel.
lol, he got it all wrong. Pilot parachutes by definition are the chutes that pull the main parachutes out. Drogue parachutes by definition are parachutes intended to slow forward motion, he got them backward
The Soviet escape system was not even close to the advanced Apollo system used on the Saturn 1-B and Saturn V....the Ares system is clearly derived from Apollo technology and if built should work very well
You idiot this is truly Russian design. The only thing which is different is the parachutes look like the condom which i used yesterday. Suck your own .
1. Does it matter what the parachutes look like provided that the can work?
2. USSR didn't fly a manned spacecraft with an LES until 1967 during Soyuz 1. Vostok had ejection seats and Voskhod had nothing. The first American manned flight with an LES was in 1961 on MR-3.
its about time NASA implements this system, the soviet/russian Soyuz craft has had this in operational service for more that 30 years already and its saved lives
Also, it's a shame that the Shuttle didn't turn out to be what it was promised to do (be cheap), but I guess it's fair trial and error. It's a shame that Energiya rocket isn't used anymore, was a very promising system..
Let's hope the public interest in space gets stronger so that funding gets increased.
once, this system has operated, was rescued 2 persons(mans;peoples) ekipazha. more(bigger) such malfunctions not bylo. for(as;after;of;to;per;on;behind) 40 years in(to;at) soviet astronautics during start and flight perished 4 kosmonavta. on(upon;in;to;for;at;per;for) land(ground) when starting dead was more(bigger)
Could, assuming the malfunction is detected a few miliseconds before the explosion it caused. And if not, these things have accelerations over 150 m/s^2, so it could probably avoid the blast. And even if it couldn't it's build to withstand pretty ugly dynamic pressures (breaking the sound barrier, reentering etc.), so an initial blast probably wouldn't hurt. Just thinking loud :)
how bout you go over there and go fuck them. let people who want to help them help, and people who want space have space. your like those fucking converters who go door to door.

Это очень старая система экстерного спасения экипажа ракеты. лет 40 назад спасла 2ум космонавтам жизнь.

I have the real LAS launch on my channel. It went exactly as planned, just like this video. Give it a look.

America's still watching computer animation meanwhile Russia uses escape system for dozens of years. Next video is from 1983.

@maximusmku Not russian design. This design is based on mercury, gemini and apollo design. The russian did not have an les on the first missions.

In what case would this system be used? Most malfunctions end in huge explosions. Could this help?
