The soul stirrers had many lead vocalist and they were all great. But the main ones I love personally are R.H.Harris, Paul Foster, Sam Cooke, Johnnie Taylor, Jimmie Outler, Willie Rogers, Martin Jacox, James Davis, Eddie Huffman, and Dillard Crume. Even J,J, Farley (known for singing bass) has done occasional lead singing. Long live themusic of The Soul Stirrers.
You can tell Sam had a hand in their music 1:16 sam's signature ohhh I know I know I think todays singers has a lil part of sam in them cause i hear it in todays music!
jimmy was not trying to immulate sam.jimmy was actually tthe Baddest lead singer that the soul stirrers ever had.he could not sing better or sweeter than sam but he was badder than sam.jimmy moved and worked a crowd like otis redding and david ruffin.jimmy wrecked every venue that he sang in with the soul stirrers and he didn't care if you were the mighty clouds of joy or the dixie hummingbirds...he kicked yo' ass! you may be the queen but jimmy was the king!
you ever seen him live? Do you know if there is any performances him live in a church i heard him sing on amazing grace and he was cutting up and they said he out sang sam cooke at a concert so u know he was bad
During the time altho Sam wasnt physically in the group. the soul stirrers were on Sams SAR label, writing most of the songs, Producing the records. And the soul stirrers were still moving with Sam Cooke on the road backing him up on live gigs too. Mr Farley told me this back in 1983
Sam cooke wasn't singing with them the whole time... He went from gospel to sorta R&B and soul or whatever you may call it but that's probably why he wasn't there
Sam Cooke was singing that Rock N Roll, as created by the black man. From no good slaves to the creators of all that is American in culture! All of this and we still don't get the credit...
sam cooke was producing the soul stirrers at this particular point.sam had also had them signed on his SAR lable.sam would drop in from time to time on their concerts as a guest vocalist but he had retired from gospel music and was changing the music scene as "the king of soul(not to be confused with the king of pop or the godfather of soul).by the time this video was made sam and elvis were the biggest artists on RCA records.
i agree with you and we should all be thankful for what God has done and for what he is getting ready to do for us. hell ,i'm still thanking him for what he did for me in the 1980s. God bless you blogrich.
Its good to read your words Mr. Foster. Your father, in my opinion, was one of the greatest male vocalist ever! I'd love to hear more of the amazing Jimmy Outler; I cannot argue with you since you were there, and I'm just going off of records I hear. I'd just say i am blessed to hear all of the greats; but Sam will always be the cat to me. I love Johhny Taylor too, as was the legendary RH Harris. Did you know him?
I´m sorry to hear that! There are lots of my favourite videos on youtube with for example Sam Cooke that also have been removed :-( Thanks for answering.
We use to have Jimmy Outler and The Soul Stirrers in a package with the Swanee Quintet. The first time I heard a Fender Bass in church. The Swanees had a left handed bass player who I heard got killed an an auto accident. The song that stood out with the bass was"I know the Lord Will Make a Way Some How".i wound up playing bass myself.JJ Farley was a great friend of dad's.Always a perfect gentleman.

Thank you for the info on Sam Cooke, one of my favorites. Of course, ultimately, are we really thankful as the song says? I know I am often not.
