  • New crew SUCK,'S

  • 73 cannot be beaten ...that's why I went to see the film 3 times in one week and bought the album the week after....The comparisons are good maybe polished but the raw rock emotion and depth of feeling is the real deal.

  • Though I was born in 95, I gotta go with 73!!!!

    Seriously Barry Dennen is Bitchin'

  • 73!!!!!!!

  • my opinion is that in 2000 they had more stuff 2 use 2 make it look better but in 1973 it's gunna be more old fashion i do't think it's a fair debate but i would go for 2000 because i'm gunna be in the musical of it at skool and we r using the costumes 'n' music from the new one

  • 73 much better

  • in my opinion- the 73' cast had better voices but i like the over the top stage acting of the new movie.

  • i am in love with renee castle!

  • With the only exception of Mary Magdelin, the original cast wins, hands down in my book.

  • how could they do so badly casting the new version... If you want to replace an old version.. you have to surpass the old performance... these people really sucked by comparison... They are so bad by comparison, I feel irritated watching it.. like... "what nerve!" ...

  • Hands down the older version is better.

  • NO COMPETITION!!!!!! Old version is opviously way better!!

  • Old version hands-down!!!!

  • I agree...'73...the best, but we're comparing movies...I didn't even know there was another movie made!! Don't 4get about live performances....Ted & Carl did....and I think Ted is still!! However, there have been others, I saw Rocker Sebastian Bach @ Klienhans Music Hall in Buffalo, NY (can't remember when tho!), but he was also awesome...I rank him #2, Ted will always be #1!!!

  • 73's is my choice, the cast then was those things that happens only once

  • 1973 HANDS DOWN. No debate whatsoever! IMHO that is. Original is always better.

  • 73 version. The actors are better, the music sounds better, and the setting is cooler. Plus, there's a certain magic about the 73 version that I don't think will ever be captured again by any cast. It just....worked so perfectly.

  • the original version is really much better : )) the new version is horrible (puke)

  • the original version is really much better : ))

  • I think the real reason were here is to decide who we would screw: The Superstar girls from the original, or from the new version.

  • I love the 1973 version much better, but I'm torn between which Simon I like better.

  • Old version all the way

  • New Zealand version is the best of all!

  • I like the new better - the old seems a bit outdated

  • the 1973 version was absolutely brilliant! the cast all had amazing voices! the new one just sounds like a mockery.... ugh especially judas!

  • definitely old. Jewison's directing may have influenced. No doubt the original performances are transcendent, flawless, authentic - new is a little cheesy broadway.

  • New Simon > Old Simon

    New Herod > Old Herod

    Old MM > New MM

    New Judas > Old Judas

    Old Jesus > New Jesus

    Steve Balsamo > Both Jesuses

    BUT I LOVE BOTH.

  • Young people watching these two movies just don't get it.

    In 1973 this movie was part of a movement.

    The new version, though full of very good singers and performances, lacked any soul.

    You were either there or you weren't.

  • OLD!!!!! DUHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • me and my sister maske fun of the new judas saying that he was the only one that tryed out for that part...god that vocie it kills my ears:( but i do love the guy who played jesus in the new version he put so muych emotion into the Gethsemane song (forgive me if i spelled that wrong)

  • me and my sister maske fun of the new judas saying that he was the only one that tryed out for that part...god that vocie it kills my ears:(

  • old is the best. ted neeley totally rocks then and now as his return to jesus christ superstar. he can still sing like he did in 73. amazing voice.

  • Simon: Old, new looks just as a gay teen picked up from a gay bar, and the old coreography is beautiful, (but the new one sings better).

    Herod: They are the same, I prefer the old Spain version of 1975.

    MaryM.: New. No words.

    Judas: Almost the same, Anderson winning for a little bit.

    Jesus: I love Glenn Carter and his acting and most of the singing is superior, but Ted doesn't act, HE LIVES IT! Just look Gethsemane live in 2006, he was just perfect, but in the movies I would prefer Glenn.

  • OLD !!!!!! The Original is so much better there is NO COMPARISON !!!the only close call is with the two People playing Mary Magdalene , but Yvonne Elliman kicks all the competition out the door!!!!!! This is the only movie Soundtrack that I have ever owned, I know every word , and can sing along with every song, but never in front of Simon Cowell

  • The 1973 version was an explosion of creativity, everything came together and the amazing music fitted perfectly. It is a masterpiece an amazing perception of the story of Jesus Christ. I have seen the new version so I can say that it wasn´t half as good as the original version!! Useless debate indeed.

  • Hahaha "aww poor new version, almost everyone hates you"

    The old one ROCKS. And I know.

  • Simon- New. He has an amazing voice. I love his hair, too.

    Herod- Neither. I really don't like any of them.

    Mary- New. She fits the part better.

    Judas- Old. Obviously.

    Jesus- New. To me, Glenn's a much better actor than Ted-- Ted showed almost no emotion at all. Also, I picture Jesus's voice to be more like Glenn's than like Ted's. The harshness in Ted's voice reminds me more of a rock star than of Jesus.

  • Comment removed

  • Simon- Old

    Herod- Close, but I have to go with old.

    Mary- Also close, but again, going with old.

    Judas- No contest. Carl Anderson's untouchable.

    Jesus- Again, Neeley's untouchable. And Glenn...ugh. Just no. His version hurts me.

    The 1973 version is really just untouchable, nothing can compare to it. There's hardly a debate. The new version tries to take an interesting spin with the darker atmosphere, but it just can't compare. No remake could.

  • Also the costumes for old jcs were really strange they were modern, but old, while the jcs 2000 costumes were all modern, and the modern concept worked. though over the top, it worked.

  • Glenn Carters good so is Jerome but there both not fit for a rock show. More contemporary musicals like Glenn was great in Jersey Boys, theyre just not Jesus/Judas Types.

  • Glenn carter is the reason for i hate JCS 2000. HE SUCK's... and plus, he got NO BALLS DAMMIT!

  • @vacoitrue I noticed your 2nd comment later so I have to throw in that however I do not like his singing and acting Glenn Carter is handsome in my opinion... at least I like his hair

  • I like a lot the interpretation of Jerome Pradon as Judas in the 2000 version. He is a more...agressive Judas and sometimes seens to be a better interpretation... But god...i'm sorry for him, to be honest... NO ONE CAN TOUCH CARL ANDERSON!

    ANderson is just god in a form of singer... as Ted Neely is Jesus Himself...

    NO one can touch those two. The Rest of the 2000 version (including Jesus) or is weak as hell, and can never be serious in comparation... or are to over the top...

    Pilates for ex...

  • @vacoitrue Completely, exactly, absolutely my opinion! Finally! After about a half a year I have read comments here.

    Just one thing - I would like to add to Neely's interesting acting a little of compassion of Jesus on Judas of the new version (watch a scene of betrayal and arrest) . Just this.

  • Of course 1973 is better. Anyway, I think both Jesus's are ok...Ted Neeley has a better voice, but this new feller' plays the character a little better in my opinion.

  • The new judas gets so off the religous base, it's terrible.

  • 1973 version is the best. Unmatched.

  • No contest. The original is best!

  • Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Yvon Elliman and the rest who played in the movie: outstanding. Nothing can be better than that.

  • old one is 10000000000000x better

  • OLD one is better no contest

  • Yvonne and Carl Anderson were the only actors (if I'm correct) that were in the original stage play before, and also in the movie?

    The movie is the best ever.

    No other versions have as much impact like this film does.

    Not to sound like a know it all, because I'm far less then that, but it did start out as a play (rock opera), so it's understood that who ever owns the rights will try and keep it going as much.

    The film is beyond anything though.

    So much feeling in every minute.

  • @MosaicMessiah Ted Neeley was one of the lepers in the original Broadway cast.

  • The people in the new version simply could not sing. No matter what the other qualities of the different version might be, Superstar is absolutely nothing if you have Judas singing recitative the entire time.

  • The Original..by far..The Original

  • @LienxGD It's an opinion. Calm Down. I just personally feel that Jerome Pradon brings a much more sinister and disturbing feel to the character. The fact that his singing isn't too great only adds more to the believability of Judas and makes the musical more than just a 'fun' seventies style show. Andrew Lloyd Webber has said himself that he prefers the modern version. He should know, he did write it....

  • Well, thanks for putting this together, but it is not even remotely close. The original cast is now and will always be the best! All of them. I met Ted and Carl in person twice. Really nice guys.

  • honestly... no offense to the new cast, its near impossible to be better than the original

    ted neeley and carl anderson are so far beyond anyone and will never ever be replaced

    also, the rest of the old cast just have stronger voices!

    the old version cannot be beat

    bottom line

  • Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson,Yvonne Elliman... Nothing more to say, that's just perfect.

  • No comparison.... To Deep Purple.

  • The reason the new one is so different, because Andrew Llyodd Webber and the producers wanted a different version. Webber originally stated he always wanted it to be modern, from the very first time he wrote it. Like Joseph was modern.

    As For Jesus, they stated they wanted his portrayal to be of a man, putting himself in positions he wouldnt be able to get out. Make him look as if he was human, but not 100% if he was really son of God. It makes the audience decide for themselves.

  • Old one is so much better.

  • i hate the new one...new Jesus a creep..

  • i hate the new one...

  • The "old," hands down.

  • Jesus - Both

    Judas - NEW ALL THE WAY

    Mary - Old

    Priests - NEW

    Pilate - NEW

    Simon- NEW

    Im gonna go with new. Just my opinion.

  • I have both movies on VCD. As you know you can play VCDs on a DVD player, so I would sometimes pop one version in the DVD and the other version in the VCD and play them against each other. By the way, why didn't you have Pilate?

  • I don't go out much and, when I do, it's usually to some mall. But, if Neely tours my country, I'm going to see him. And, after the show, I'd like to go backstage to meet him.

  • original cast hands down - no comparison

  • I think the new JCS is better, it has more power in its songs, the jesus (glenn carter) in the new JCS can sing much better than Tedd, thats my opinion, and yea both Judases were good, different but good. thats all I can say

  • In these roles Yvonne, Carl and Ted's shoes are very tough to fill. They truely brought this musical to life for sooo many. I haven't seen the "new" apparently updated version but prefer the original!

  • I cannot believe that this is open for debate. The original version (1973) is much better

  • @eonunwor Right I grew up with dis movie

  • Respond to this video... I also enjoy the original music for Pilate and Christ

  • Simon's better in the new one.

    I hated Herod in both.

    I think both Mary's were good.

    Carl Anderson's shoes were way too big to fill. But I think Jerome Pradon didn't do too bad a job. Although Pradon was a thousand times better actor.

    Ted Neeley's screams were way better, but I think Glenn Carter had a much cleaner sound.

    Overall, I liked the new one better. Caiaphas and the priests were much better in the new one too.

  • the old had more soul. the new is more broadway. i think carl anderson's judas steals the show and sets the tone for the old movie. jerome pardon's new judas just doesnt cut it. the old simon was more a zealot, the new simon more of a heartbreak. either mary was fine, either jesus was fine. the old herod was better.

  • Old :)

  • Old

  • OLD!!!

  • Old version's better without a doubt

  • @bjarni1909

    Yes Yes

  • Old one is better for me... Ted Needly the BEST JESUS EVER!!!

  • Older version is much better.

  • your an idiot if you cant tell that the old is 100% better,

    better directing and better, acting/ andrew lloyd weber is a beast

  • i dont think you can justify a comparison of the two... the music is the same yea, but its really not... the music from the 73 version has a big funk influence. it has the typical 70s sound... the 2000 version has a more straight rock feel, theres not much soul put into it because thats just now how this generation sings... they are both perfect to the times that they were in... but i still like the 73 version better. =P

  • What does it fucking matter? BOTH are equally good. One is the product of the Baby Boomer generation, the other is a product of the Generation X.

  • old all day who is the english guy at 314 sucks

  • The first version of anything is aways the best!!!

  • Old version it´s better to me in all ways so.. yes the 1973 version forever(L)

  • Defintely the 1973 version, the cast was dynamite, and real soulful. You cant beat the cast off Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, Yvonne Elliman, Larry Marshall, josh Mostel and also the guy who played Pilate, cant remember the name................absolutely superb cast, cant be beatin.........so its the old version all the way for me :)

  • New Herrod,

    Yyvonne Elliman, Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson cannot be replaced - definitely old Jesus, Mary, Judas - they have a soul that the new cast cannot even hope to touch.

  • old old old old

    new sucks fucking ass.

    new. EAR RAPE.

  • old old old old

    new sucks fucking ass.

  • carl and ted is unmatched

  • New Judas and old Judas are very good it's hard to make a choice.

    Rik Mayall is genius as Herod. About Josh Kostel... Terrible. I don't know, is there any actor in this world, who can play it worse

    Mary... I think, Rene Castle sings better, but she is not so beauty as Yvonne

    Simon - Tony Vincent is so charming ;)

    Jesus - Glenn, no dought. He better than Neeley, beter than Gillan, better than anyone.

  • I like the old cast way better especially Ted Neeley for Jesus Christ He was and is the only choice for Jesus any doubt listen to him singing Gethsemene

  • Old school all the way! I say old school because the original cast wrote the book on this one. They are simply the best!

  • Simon-->new

    Herod--->old

    Mary-->new

    Judas--->old

    Jesus--->new

    Bad guys--->NEWNEWNEW!!! NEW!!

  • Old all the way... however I think Ian Gillan as Jesus is hands down the finest performance ever... he is amazing. Even better than Ted Neeley, who is awesome also. I think the new cast has some good ones... the dude that plays Pilate - he's great, as is the guy doing Herod. There will never be one as good as the old original movie, but I think it's entertaining to see different casts.

  • Argh...theres bits from each version id love to Frankenstein together to make the ultimate version of JCS

  • Ted Neeley and the entire cast of the original version are all totally awesome, there will never be any other cast that can improve on the old version. It is a masterpiece, and in particular the Gethsemane scene - how can anyone fail to feel the torment of that moment?

  • @sentry4u absolutely agree!!..I have seen dozens of versions with multiple cast member changes and there will NEVER be any to compare with the orignal cast. !! Carl Anderson..God rest his soul..was such an amazing Judas. I saw Ted and Carl together on stage several times and each performance was more phenominal than the one before it. I saw the farewell tour without Carl and there was just a big void where he had been ...RIP our friend...you had an amazing impact on this girl.

  • definatly old

  • What

  • OLD IS BETTER THAN THE NEW!

  • Comment removed

  • Old version much better. 1973.

  • If anybody ever needed an example of someone who sings vs. singing with SOUL, they need look no further than this video! So much emotion! Ted and Carl truly are Jesus and Judas!

    The original cast had pretty much a dirt cheap budget so they really had to bring it when it came to the music. I thought this new JCS was a comical parody when I first stumbled upon it on YouTube. Omg, talk about cheesy! It reminded me of a bad Muppets musical. Especially the new Herod's voice!

  • It's not even close.................OLD!!!!!!

  • oh hell no, the old one alll they way!

  • no way!!! old is much better.... new one sucks!

  • old,old,old,old,OLD!!!!!!!

  • old

    old

    old

    old

    old

  • Old Mary, Judas, and Herod totally dominate the new ones

  • The most important roles:

    Anderson - extraordinary expressive singer, great charisma (animality, passion, roughess)

    Neeley - a very good singer, magic charisma (makes you feel respect and compasssion and is enigmatic)

    Dennen - a very good singer, his charisma and what he says may change your way of thinking

    Pradon - normal singer, but yes, he has charisma and project of "another Judas"

    Carter - very professional pop refined singer, handsome, but little charisma for me

    Johanson - I dislike

  • Simon - SOOOOO NEW!!!!!!!! I LOVE Tony Vincent...he's the best EVER!!!

    Herod - New. Amazing.

    Mary - Okay, old. Yvonne's great.

    Judas - I love the Broadway version where TONY VINCENT himself plays Judas. But otherwise OLD. Jerome can act soo much better, but his singing voice..eh.

    Jesus - I gotta say, as much as the rest of you might kill me, I like Glenn Carter's voice better. Sorry, but that's my opinion.

    So I guess I like the NEW version better. A lot better, personally.

  • Old >>>> all of them!

  • PLEASE! There isn´t nothing like the Old film,is just a master piece. Carl and Ted are my gods xD

  • Most of these i prefer the old except Mary the new one sounds better.

  • except for the Mary Magdalane actress I found all the Old Actors better. Mary was a tossup

  • I have listen to all the new versions.. and I have great appreciation of Balsamo's performance...BUT Ted and Carl's are the only Jesus/Judas versions that make any sense. Is just that they have "owned" their performance. I don't think anyone can even come close on matching them.

  • There's nothing to compare. You can't improve perfection.

  • well I reccomend that everyone listens to the 1996 London cast, with Steven Balsamo as Jesus, Zubin Varla as Judas, and Alice freakin Cooper as King herod!

    I think that version was the supreme winner :)

  • thanks, I tried Balsamo´s Gethemane but I disliked... too much impressive bombastic pop for me... but interesting information!

  • @gubban2 Alice Cooper played Herod?!?!?! That would be epically AMAZING! (Alice Cooper is the BEST.)

  • @RockPaperSpock yeah he is freaking amazing, it's somewhere on youtube ;)

  • The old version has soul, heartbeat and pregnancy (look at their eyes). And they also sing better and look better in my opinion. And I like hippies.

    So - easy for me. Old one.

  • A régi az IGAZI!! Az új az egy nyálas valami csupán!!!!!A nyomába sem érhetnek az 1973-as verziónak!!!!

    The old one Just the old one !!!!!

  • the new Judas rocks!I love Jerome Pradon.

    I think the new version is better

  • I am never tired of watching the 1973 movie. Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson and Barry Dennen are amazing. Love it.

  • Simon: Tony Vincent

    King Herod: Neither

    Mary: Yvonne

    Judas: Carl Anderson

    Jesus: Ted Neeley (Sure Glenn Carter's good, but he can't compare to Neeley)

  • Okay, I like Rik Mayall better as King Herod. Maybe I like my Herod snobbier.

  • @hsuzillamusicgroup Yeah, Rik Mayalls acting is brilliant.

  • The new one is toooo "fabulous" for me.

  • OLD!!!!

  • There's no comparison! The older version is 100% better!!

  • Is there really any argument at all?!?!?! OLD ALL DAY LONG!!!

  • OLD

  • Is this a joke ? There's nothing to compare ...

  • The new cast BLOWS what garage act did they get these people from

  • Apparently vocal abilities were vastly better 30+ years ago. Glen Carter can't (or won't) hit that high note in Gethsemane.Yvonne has a much fuller voice.

    It sounds like all the people in the new one are REALLY, REALLY trying and thus are all over acting.

    No way can the new stand up to the OLD VERSION!

  • All the old characters. Hands down! There's no comparison!

  • OLD.

  • I like the old one best.

  • simon: OLD!! the new has awful voice..

    Herod: old! the new hasn't got an own character, an own profile..:S

    Mary: The difference is very small. Nobody can make a new song for her/himself.. but old:)

    judas: the new is quite good, I can't choose or I should see them in live.

    christ: glenn carter is awful:S:S OLD rulz

  • The. Old. Version.

    The old Jesus sounded like he was conflicted and scared and angry at times.

    The new Jesus sounded like he had diarrhea.

    There is no contest.

  • Old all across the board

  • I never even knew there was a new version. But what I see from it in this video, it looks more like a parody. I vote old all the way.

  • I personally favored the original due to the cool reflection of the time period when it was created and the songs were written the new jcs would be better if the music was in sync with the times

  • i love the old....i just seen Jesus Christ Superstar in Riverside ca. and Ted Neeley was still playing Jesus....

  • ALL OLD CHARACTERS ARE BEST... Ted only gets better and better and better... saw him the other night (Night before EASTER, nonetheless) and he was beyond any of my wildest expectations... amazing amazing amazing...

    New ones aren't bad, just not as good... :)

  • The original record with Gillian.

  • Simon: New. Tony Vincent is so passionate

    Herod: Neither. I really dislike both of them

    Mary: Neither. Both have their merits, but my favorite is Natalie Toro

    Judas: BOTH obviously! They are both so fantastic, how could you choose?!

    Jesus: Old. Though Glenn has a fantastic voice, Ted's performance is an all-around win.

  • Lets just put it this way my dad and i watch the old version every easter...im sorry to those who prefer the new one but the old is the only way to go in my book

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA IT'S A SHIT CONTEST... OLD IS THE BEST... OLD IS TRUE!!!!

    into the new version jesus is like Manowar look... lol... and other people... only good singer but nothing of special... In the old version all singher or actor or dancer are GREAT! The old version is a greatfull idea... the new version only a bad reproduction of a time if does not belong to us...

    SRY for my bad english...

  • Judas=OLD

    Jesus=OLD

    Peter=OLD

    Simon=OLD

    Mary=OLD

  • Judas=OLD

    Jesus=OLD

    Peter=OLD

    Simon=OLD

    Mary=OLD

  • The old one! No doubt.

  • The old one! No doubt.

  • I love the OLD version ... I grew up with Ted's fantastic voice ... Hands down ... This is a NO CONTEST .... the ORIGINAL CAST rocks the house .... Yvonne's song is so soothing to my ears ... Simon and Herod OLD version is so entertainingly deep and the late Carl Anderson's song was really TOO MUCH .... OLD for me ....

  • the new jesus is a gay version

  • Personally, I think that the old version had the better voices for these characters. However, the two for Mary Magdalene were pretty close to a tie. They were so close to one another. The 1973 version wins, though.

  • @Nanette2010Gardner amen to that!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't think of anything to say to you but....YES...Simon in the new one is like a oh......idk.....A KEN DOLL WITH A GUN!

  • OLD!! No contest.

  • yes the old version rocks!!!!

  • OLD, hands down...

  • 1973, hands down

  • uh, old

  • 1973 version hands down

  • The Original! Hands Down baby

  • @Toltec2Templar I think you will find the original was done by Ian Gillan in 1970. this is still by far the best selling version (20 million copies) of JCS and was at that point never performed before. Check out the original version and then the Australain version by John Farnham. Both versions feature extraordinary singers delivering complete unique versions:)

  • OLD!!!!!

  • Herod--->Old

    Simon ---> Old

    Mary ----> Old : Yvonne rocks!!!

    Judas ---> How can you compare Carl to any other Judas?? OLD!!

    Christ ---> Ted Neeley is my God.XD

  • THE OLD IS MUCH BETTER

  • agreed

  • the old one is deffo betta judas in the old ones voice is just mind blowingly good the new jesus's voice is really quite weak compared to ted neeley's the only person who is better in the new one is tony vincent
