Bud Shank ....Great Sax. It really pisses me when they call the sax player Clarence (something..? that just died and played with Bruce Springsteen a ..." genius " >????? If he's a genius than what is Bud Shank >? Oh well what more can we expect from the masses..?
The tune heard behind Evan's intro and outro for this episode was composed by Shank's pianist / musical director, Clare Fischer; entitled "Carnaval," it was first recorded in 1963 by the Hi-Lo's (for whom Fischer also served as pianist / m.d.) on THE HI-LO'S HAPPEN TO BOSSA NOVA (reissued in 2002 on THE HI-LO'S ON REPRISE) and again covered in 1966 by Sergio Mendes on THE GREAT ARRIVAL.

Clare Fischer and Bud Shank! Amazing! They were both influenced by the Konitz / Tristano school (and what great musician wasn't?), but Clare's solo on this is so wonderfully chromatic! And the ways that he played with resolutions of the improvised lines within the changes...wow! And that is just one aspect of his genius. His solo ballads defy musical logic, but are profound in their beauty.
this takes me back about 50 years to L.A. when i used to see Bud Shank in saloons performing. How neat that was. I think it was the Haig on wilshire Blvd.
This is the greatest! I remember Bud Shank from his 1983 North Texas State University Master class for all of us Jazz saxophone majors. He was burning then, and on this clip he takes it to another world. Who would have thought about doing Misty as a Jazz Samba, totally cool school! You dig?

What a refreshing rendition. Totally breaks the mold. I'm going to look for more Bud Shank stuff.

What an awesome version! I've played "Misty" as a ballad and uptempo swing. THIS was cool!
